Thinks the King, who exhorted Elks to say only truth and add nothing from malice, is too just and noble to desire his ruin. Hopes for better times.

35. Humph. May to the Same. Has delivered the despatch from France, and complimented the King that two great Princes offer him their alliance for the Princess. His Majesty wishes the negociation with the Elector Palatine to proceed by the Duke of Bouillon, and he will reply to the Ambassador of Savoy after he has spoken with that of Spain. His Ambassador in Spain is to condole with that King [on his Queen's death]. M. Caron to be assured that the letters written to the States against Vorstius were not divulged by the King's direction, &c.

Nov. ? 37. — to [the Same]. Complains that the Receiver of Yorkshire levies on Lord Sheffield's lands the arrears of Mowgrave, about which a settlement was made. Requests him to induce his niece, the Marchioness of Winchester, to pay 366l. owed by her to Lord Sheffield's late mother, for whom the writer is executor, and bequeathed by her to her grandchildren. Also that Lord Sheffield's annuity of 500l. for twenty-eight years may be made payable out of the alum, rather than the Exchequer, as its sale value would then rise 300l. or 400l.

[Arthur] Ingram, the great undertaker, has broken for large sums. The King is hunting at Newmarket. The Queen is at Greenwich. The Ambassador from Savoy has obtained a cold answer. It is now rumoured that the King of Spain himself wants the Princess Elizabeth. Met Casaubon at the Bishop of Ely's. He was scarcely contented with his pension of 300l. per ann. He envies Turquet [Mayerne]'s preferment. Gave Sig. Candido's letters to the Bishop [of Ely], who complains that his foreign letters are opened before they reach him.

49. Sir John Spilman to the Same. Entreats order for payment of the old debt of 4,781l. due two and a half years ago. The Queen owes him also 3,000l. lent to her, and his part in 9,000l. which Her Majesty owes to [George] Herriot, for the Prince's sword and other jewels.
Nov. ? 50. Notes [by Salisbury] of the proportion of alloy to be mixed with the bullion for the current coin, and of the danger of export of gold, from its value being proportionably greater than that of silver.

Statement addressed to the King, of the loss sustained by England in exchange of coin with other countries, and proposal of remedy by raising the price of gold in proportion to silver to the same standard as in the States, and by coining English moneys of corresponding value to those of foreign nations.
Nov. ? 52. Project for meeting the increase of value laid upon the coins of the Low Countries, by issuing a copper coinage corresponding thereto, and by raising the value of English silver and gold coins, in order to prevent the losses of merchants in foreign trade, and encourage the importation of bullion.

Statement by the Officers of the Mint that the raising of the value of English silver coins by making a pound Troy of silver worth 3l. 11s. 6d., only equalizes the value of English moneys with those of foreign countries, and that to prevent the export of gold, its price must be raised in proportion.

Deaths of Brook, the lawyer, and of M. de Vitry, Sir Wm. Bowes, Harry Constable, and Fontaine, the French preacher. The Savoy Ambassador lingers; that of Spain went privately to the King at Newmarket. The Prince receives Berkhamstead from Sir Hen. Carey, as belonging to the Duchy of Cornwall.
