PREFACE.
The text of this volume was prepared by the late Mr. W. J. Hardy. The printing was begun as long ago as 1913, but was suspended from motives of economy during the war. Before printing could be resumed Mr. Hardy died. Miss Ethel Stokes, who had been to some extent associated with him in the work, superintended the printing of the rest of the text, compiled the index, and wrote the following introductory note.
