Miscellaneous, 1541

1541. 25 Feb. Simancas. E.A. 638. 475. Idiaquez to Cobos.
(In a letter of advice from the one Secretary in Germany to the other in Spain, the following passage relating to England occurs:) “The relations with England continue without change. Although the new English ambassador has made no formal proposal, he hints that if the Emperor would consent to marry the Princess (i.e., Mary Tudor) great advantages might accrue to him.” (fn. 1)
Ratisbon, 25 February 1541.
4 July. Simancas. E.A. 638. 476. Idiaquez to Cobos.
(In another letter of advice similar to the above, the following passage occurs:) “We are now on friendly terms with England, and it would be quite easy now, if the Emperor thought advisable, to enter into negotiations. His Imperial Majesty has, however, postponed for the present the opening of such negotiations, although he has been assured that the English will treat with no other power without the Emperor.”
Ratisbon, 4 July 1541.

Footnotes

  • 1. Bishop Stephen Gardiner, the ambassador in question, had on this occasion hinted to Granvelle that a reconciliation between Charles and Henry was desirable. Granvelle had somewhat roughly replied that Henry had outraged and wounded the Emperor deeply by his divorce and his repudiation of Rome, and that reparation must first come from him. See letter from the Nuncio Poggio to Cardinal Santa Croce (Marcello Cervini), Calendar Henry VIII. Vol. XVI. p. 260.
