March 1645

Mar. 18.
Senato, Secreta. Dispacci, Firenze. Venetian Archives.
202. Giovanni Ambrogio Sarotti, Venetian Resident at Florence, to the Doge and Senate.
Encloses list of ships of high board which have arrived at and sailed from the port during the last two months. There are only two English among them (sic), but more are expected. As a general rule those which come here do not stay long because of the great trade and the opportunities which they always have of being despatched. However, the caution with which they will have to proceed in the future in undertaking voyages with goods of the Levant will render them more reasonable and more accommodating in their pretensions.

204. Gio. Battista Nani, Venetian Ambassador in France, to the Doge and Senate.
The queen of England grows more and more distressed at the news which the king, her husband, has sent to her, and without powerful assistance she is afraid that he will not be able to keep the field. The conference being dissolved, reports as well as hopes of peace have vanished away. The hopes and courage of the parliamentarians, who are in possession of two important positions, are constantly on the increase. From here certainly he will not draw any assistance. The queen herself by dint of saving has remitted to her husband 36,000 crowns taken from what was assigned to her by his Majesty for her maintenance and her expenses. Regarded as assistance it is little enough, but when one considers the needs of the one who receives and the effort of the other who stints herself, it seems great.
Paris, the 21st March, 1645.
