Oct. 8 Warrant from the Lords of the Treasury to George Earl of Halifax, Auditor of the Receipt, Robert Lord Walpole, Clerk of the Pells, and the Officers of the Receipt of the Exchequer. For the application of 101,483l. 11s. 1¼d. (together with 2,086l. 8s. 10¾d. remaining unapplied of the Land Tax, 1727) to discharge the whole principal remaining unsatisfied upon the 29th September, 1729, on the orders of loan registered on the Land Tax, 1727. Oct. 9 Same from same to the Commissioners of Excise. Authorising an allowance of 50l. to John Brackenbury in his accounts as Collector of Hertford Collection for his loss in receiving a bank note which was altered from 20l. to 70l.

Oct. Petition of Thomas Benson, late Secondary of Wood Street Compter, to the Lords of the Treasury. In 1717 he levied 200l. on Samuel Davis on an extent, and paid same to William Basindine, one of Mr. Medcalfe's chief clerks, Solicitor to the Customs, who undertook to pay same to Mr. Hawes, then Receiver General. Therefore prays that all proceedings against himself, Sir Peter Delane, and Sir Harcourt Master, late sheriff of London, for the 200l. may be stayed. 1 page.

Nov. 22 Reference by the Lords of the Treasury to the Commissioners of Customs. Of an Order in Council, dated November 19, referring to the Lords of the Treasury the petition of several merchants trading to Venice and the Currant Islands for the discontinuance of the quarantine, the said places having been free for upwards of a year of all pestilential disease. Nov. 25 Report from the Commissioners of Excise to the Lords of the Treasury. On the petition of Anthony Masters, late of Gosport, labourer, committed to Winchester Gaol in June, 1725, and now asking release. The Solicitor of the Excise, Richard Chandler, has searched the Crown Office, and finds that the prosecution against petitioner was earned on by the Commissioners of Customs. 1 page.

Appending.—Report of the Commissioners of the Customs to the Lords of the Treasury on Hallsall's petition. The tobacco shipped in the “Orange Tree,” Robert Kennish, master, from Liverpool for Cadiz, was landed at Ireland only to make room for butter, and not for fraud. By law no drawback can be allowed for any tobacco landed in Ireland unless the entry outwards in Great Britain be made for Ireland. The tobacco was entered and discharged fairly at Limerick, therefore recommend the permission to alter the entry outwards, so as to entitle petitioner to the drawback.		 Ibid, p. 2–4.

For the preparation of a bill to pass the Privy Seal to authorise the Lords of the Treasury to issue warrants from time to time to the Receiver General of the royal revenue in the county of Lancaster, for the payment of the stipend of 200l. per annum out of the rent of 200l. reserved and payable to the late King for the site of the dissolved Monastery of Furness and divers lands in the county of Lancaster in lease from the Crown, the same to be for the use of four such preachers, at 50l. per annum each, as should be nominated by the Bishop of Chester, and commonly called the King's preachers, “established by our royal predecessor Queen Elizabeth in the said county of Lancaster as in and by the letters of Privy Seal of 1715, May 17, may appear.” Given at the Court at St. James's.
