April 1664

April 7. The memorial of the 5th inst. from the Excise Commissioners read and entered concerning William Lamb and William Dawgs, Farmers of the Excise of Lincoln, who have not paid the rent contracted for according to their covenants, but are very great sums in arrear, on which it was advised that the said farm should be re-assumed and let to John Weekes, of Ashton, co. Northampton, at the rent of 6, 800l per an. for the remainder of the term. Forward the names of said Weekes's sureties. Ordered: allowed of, and a lease to be made accordingly. Same from same of the 23rd ult., read and entered, proposing to allow to James Ricant (Richant), Mathew Child and Mathew Copinger, sometime Sub-Commissioners for Excise in co. Middlesex, 50l. towards their extraordinaries on their account ending 1660, Dec. 5, on which they are in arrear 264l. 19s. 1d. Ordered: allowed of. [Ibid. p. 100.]
Same from same of the 15th ult., read, similarly proposing to allow 20l. to Jo. Mortimer, one of the former Sub-Commissioners of Excise for the town and port of Lyme, who was commissioned (when the Sub-Commissioners of Excise for said port were dismissed in 1660, Dec. 25) to collect the arrears standing out on certain merchants: same being towards his charges herein. Same of the 6th inst. from the Commissioners for Arrears of Excise, read and entered, concerning the arrear of 1,117l. 5s. 1d. standing charged upon Nicholas Bond, Farmer of the Excise of timber and wood imported, on account of rent of said farm for the year ended 1657, March 25, and proposing to accept from his sureties, Sir William Smith and Edward Hart, 654l. 5s. 2d., together with a bill of exchange for 45l. 14s. 10d., drawn by Josiah Child on Edward Allen, sometime Cashier to the Commissioners for the Navy and Victualling, and made payable to the said farmer of imported timber: making in all 700l. Same of the 5th inst. from the Excise Commissioners, read and entered, proposing to allow to Robert Butts, William Stockton, and Valentine Pearse, Sub-Commissioners of Excise in Suffolk, for the losses sustained from the contagious disease of small pox which raged for six months last year in the towns of St. Edmundbury and Eye and Hadleigh in said county: as certified by Lord Cornwallis and other members of Parliament of said county. [?] Same of the 23rd ult. from the Commissioners for the Arrears of Excise, read and entered, proposing to remit to Thomas Mason, one of the securities for William Bromsall, and Jo. Birchensha, sometime Farmers of Excise in co. Bucks, the 20l. remaining due on their arrear of 30l. for the farm of the year ending 1658, March 25. Ordered: allowed of. [Ibid. p. 102.]
April 9. The royal warrant of the 22nd ult., read and entered, to permit Monsieur de Baisse to embark four horses for France free of Custom. Order: for observation hereof by the Customs offices. [Ibid. X. p. 258.]
April 16. The royal warrant of the 15th inst., read and entered, to permit Le Sr. Johannes to return to France with 12 horses and 12 couples of dogs for the use of the Chevalier de Gramont free of Custom. Order: for the observation hereof by the Customs officers. [Early Entry Book X. p. 258.]
April 30. The memorial of the 21st inst. from the Excise Commissioners, read and entered, concerning the arrears of Excise due from Elianor Prosser, of London, widow and brewer, and proposing a method of payment of same. Ordered: allowed of. [Ibid. XII. p. 108.]
