Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Customs Farmers to pay to Thomas Ross for the use of the Duke of Monmouth 2,000l. for the two tallies struck upon them Dec. 31 last: there being a present necessity for said moneys. Ibid
Same from same to the Auditor of the Receipt to continue the annuity of 250l. to Richard Brett, and to pay the arrears due thereon: in accordance with a royal warrant, recited, of the 30th ult. Ibid, p. 24.
Money warrant for 50l. to Francis Terringham for service to His Majesty. Ibid.
Same for 472l. 5s. 4d. to Christopher Lord Hatton for four months' pay for the garrison of Guernsey from 1663, Aug. 8, to Nov. 28. Ibid, p. 25.
Same for the pay for four months 1663, Oct. 3, to 1663–4, Jan. 23, for the three out of the seven companies of the garrison of Berwick which still remained after the disbandment thereof Oct. 3 last, viz. Same for 150l. to Lord Widdrington, Governor of Berwick, which with the product of certain oats and coals left in the said garrison by the Duke of Albemarle is to be employed towards the most necessary repairs of the walls and fortifications of said garrison according to an order of the Privy Council of 1662–3, March 13. Jan. 9 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton [to the Receipt] for tallies on the Excise for 801l. 10s. 0d., being three months' pay for the garrison of Plymouth, Oct. 2 last to Dec. 24. Early Entry Book V. p. 26.
Jan. 12 Same from same to the Barons of the Exchequer to swear George Nicholas, son of Sir Edward Nicholas, into the place of Surveyor General of Customs in England and Wales, as by the letters patent of 1663, Dec. 12, granting said place to William Rumbold and said Nicholas. Ibid, X. p. 245.
Jan. 14 Same from same to Francis Stevens, Sergeant at Arms, to arrest John Howard, keeper of the common gaol in Winchester, who refuses to pay Excise (although he brews and consumes great quantities of beer) or permit the officers of Excise to enter his house to take an account of his brewings, and also refuses to appear before the Sub-Commissioners on summons, but stands out in high contempt of the law, to the evil example of others. Treasurer Southampton to [? the Justices of Peace for co. Southants] informing them of the above order of arrest, and giving them an opportunity, before its execution, to deal effectually with the said Howard as their deputy, and to reduce him to comply with the Excise Farmers by making his just and true entries and payments. Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Customs Farmers and officers to permit Sir Richard Fanshaw, Kt. and Bart., to ship himself, his retinue and certain goods, detailed, he being ready to embark as Ambassador to the Catholic King. Ibid, X. p. 245.
Same from same to same to permit the Ambassador from the French King to import, Custom free, three tuns of French wine for his servants as part of the quantity His Majesty is pleased to allow him to so import. Ibid.
Same from same to same tó observe a royal warrant, dated the 4th. inst., for discharge of the ship "St. Andrew," of Leith, Capt. John Tennent commander, belonging to the Earl of Teviot, bound for Leith, which by stress of weather was, together with her lading of salt, driven into Milford Haven, where she (being designed for transporting provisions for Tangier) unladed her cargo in order to repair her damage. Jan. 15 Same from same to Francis Stevens, Sergeant at Arms, to arrest Samuell Potter and Widow Stocks and Henry Stocks, of Banbury, for abusing, reviling and threatening the officers of Excise in co. Oxford in levying a distress issued out by Littleton Osbaldston and William Sheppard, two justices of said county against said Potter and Widow Stocks, mother of said Henry Stocks, for non-payment of Excise: also to arrest Nicholas Knockford (Knottsford), constable, and Ambrose Horseman, tithingman, of Banbury, who were ordered by the Mayor of that town to aid in said distress, but deserted the same. Letter of direction from same to same for the following money warrants to be met out of the farm of the Customs for the month of March next, viz.: 1,000l. to the Treasurer of the Queen; 1,100l. to the Duke of Albemarle for horses for the King; 500l. to Sir John Lawson for one year's pension; 600l. to Sir Raph Knight and Sir John Clobery; the arrear (unstated) due to the garrison of Portsmouth; 240l. to Sir Godfrey Lloyd, His Majesty's Engineer, for one years salary; 150l. to Monsieur Le Febre, the King's Chemist, for same; and 240l to Monsieur Mollet, the King's Gardener, for same. Jan. 15 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Clerk of the Signet attending, for a Privy Seal in the terms of a draft, prefixed, for 88l. a month to Sir Geoffry Shackerley, Governor of the Castle of Chester, (appointed thereto loco Sir Edwin Lloyd) for the pay of said Castle from August 8 last. Jan. 18 Note of attestation by Treasurer Southampton and Lord Ashley of the declaration of the account of John Baynes, late Pay-master of the English forces in Scotland. Ibid, p. 49.
Money warrant for 500l. to Mr. Carey as royal bounty; to re-place a previous warrant which has been mislaid. Ibid, p. 30.
Same for the payment to Judith Mason, widow and executrix of Dr. Robert Mason, of the arrears of the annuity of 100l. to said Dr. Mason for his office of a Master of Requests, as by the letters patent of 1640, July 14. Ibid.
Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Receipt to discharge the baronet fee of 1,095l. due from Sir William Boothby, Kt., of Broadlow Ash, co. Derby. Ibid.
Same from same to the Auditor of the Receipt to recall the various warrants, detailed, amounting in all to 12,188l. 10s. 0d., ordered out of the fire hearth money to Mr. Foxe, Paymaster of the Guards, said Foxe not having received any of same by reason of pre-assignments on the said fund, and because of the slow payment of hearth money by the sheriffs, by reason whereof said Foxe can get no credit on this fund: and in lieu of the above to strike tallies for the said sum on the London Excise: likewise to draw an order for the 22,642l. 16s. 8d. which will be due to the Guards for their pay from Nov. 28 last to the 23rd inst.: same to be by tallies on the like fund. Jan. 19 Same from same to the Customs Farmers to deliver to the Comte de Cominges, Ambassador from the French King, 30 tuns of French wine custom free: as by the Privy Seal of the 12th inst. Ibid, X. p. 247.
Jan. 21 Treasurer Southampton to the Commissioners for levying the subsidies of those counties assigned to the city as security for the loan of 50,000l. urging them to the speedy and effectual levying of same, and for same to be paid to Sir Thomas Player, Chamberlain of the city, at such times as are appointed by the Act for said subsidies, according to the directions of the letters patents securing said loan. Jan. 22 Letters patent by Treasurer Southampton constituting William Docwra, of London, gent., to the office or place of undersearcher or subsearcher in the port of London on the surrender of John Norwood, gent. Early Entry Book X. p. 247.
Money warrant for 10l. to Ayliff Greene, brother and administrator to Thomas Greene, deceased, late messenger attending the Lord Treasurer. Ibid, V. p. 33.
Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Customs Farmers to pay the like sum to same for the said Greene's attendance on said Farmers from Sept. 29 last to his death on Nov. 29 last. Ibid.

Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Customs Farmers to pay 126l. 10s. 0d to the seven Auditors of the Exchequer Court (viz., Sir Edmund Sawyer, Sir Joseph Seymour, William Guyn, Richard Kinsman, William Hill, John Phellipps and Richard Aldworth), for one year's allowance to Sept. 29 last, and 6l. 13s. 4d. to said William Hill for one year's fee to same date. Jan. 29 Money warrant for 200l. to Col. Legg, Lieutenant of the Ordnance, towards the reparation of Sandgate Castle, as by the order in Council of Dec. 16 last ordering same upon the estimate of 785l. 16s. 2d. for the repairs of said castle. Ibid, pp. 38–9.

Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Clerk of the Signet for a Privy Seal for 425l. to Charles Earl of Carlisle, Ambassador Extraordinary to the Muscovite, being so much disbursed by him for a certain quantity of tin and lead which he carried along with him upon that embassy as a present to the Muscovite. Jan. 29 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Receipt for tallies on the Customs for 260l. to William Seaman, employed by His Majesty to Algiers upon his special affairs: same having been already advanced to him by the Customs Farmers. Early Entry Book V. p. 51.
Jan.— Treasurer Southampton to the _ Trout, Esq., Receiver General of Crown revenues in Kent, Surrey, and Sussex, concerning the arrears standing out in his receipt, and requiring present payment in, on account of same, to the use of the King's servants and the Queen in certain amounts, detailed.
