April 4 Treasurer Southampton to the Commissioners of Appeals in Excise to appoint some day for the examination of the business of John Symball, brewer, who has been ordered to be taken into custody "it appearing unto us by the witnesses hee tenders, to be a buisness fit to bee examined into with some care." April 7 Treasurer Southampton to the Customs Farmers, praying them to send into the Receipt 300l. to-morrow morning, in part of 900l. ordered to Mr. Hingston's artificers who have been commanded by the King to erect a new organ in his chapel at Whitehall: "for unles the artificers have this part of his money His Majesty will faile of his organ in his chapel this approaching great feast." Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Receipt for tallies of assignment to be levied on the Customs for half a year on the annuities of 1,000 marks and 500l. to the Earl of Nottingham. Ibid, p. 90.
Same from same to the Receipt to pay the pensions of 500l. per an., payable to the Countess of Brentford, and 300l. per an. to Mistress Harding, and 40l. per an. to Widow Cary, notwithstanding the restraint on pensions. Ibid.
Same from same to Thomas Bland, Receiver General of Crown Revenues in co. York, to similarly continue the payment of the Countess of Portland's pension. "And whereas it is not unknown to you whilest His Maty. kept on this restraint [of the payment of pensions] he was pleased by virtue of a Privy Seal in that behalf to order her the payment of 500l., which Privy Seal passed in the name of Richard Sherborne and was received as part of her pension," the said 500l. is to be taken as for the half-year then due on said pension. Treasurer Southampton to the Justices of Peace of co. Southampton concerning the order made at the General Sessions of the Peace at Winchester, Jan. 12 last, on an appeal made by Thomas Justice, of Hartley Wintney, co. Southants, innkeeper, and two others, making null the order made against the said persons by the Sub-Commissioners of Excise for said County: same having been done without hearing the said Sub-Commissioners, who had not had notice of the appeal. This is against the law, and said Justice takes advantage of it to send copies of said order to all parts of the county to encourage others. Therefore desires them to re-consider said order and to consult with the Acts of Parliament herein; "and then wee doubt not but you will doe His Majesty and his revenue right by causing that order to be vacated." April 7 and May 6 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Clerk of the Signet for a Privy Seal for 13,363l. 12s. 11d. for interest money to Alderman Backwell and Sir John Shaw for moneys lent by them as in Auditor John Phelip's account of the 18th ult., viz., 8,171l. 7s. 3d. for moneys lent by Backwell, and 825l. for ditto lent by Sir John Shaw, and 4,367l. 5s. 8d. for ditto lent jointly by Backwell and Shaw. April 14 and May 6 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Clerk of the Signet for a Privy Seal for the payment to Sir John Shaw and Edward Backwell of 4,126l. 15s. 0d. in full payment of the allowance of 40s. per cent. on 206,339l. 17s. 2d. by them paid from 1661, July 29, to 1662, November 19, for the services of Dunkirk garrison, and 3.100l. in full payment of that sum paid by them to Sir Maurice Berkley. April 21 Note of attestation by Treasurer Southampton and Lord Ashley of the declaration of the accompt (entered in abstract) of Sir Francis Godolphin, Governor of the garrison in the Scilly Isles, for 37 months' pay of two Companies of Foot, lately disbanded, and 31 months' pay for one company undisbanded: to 1663, April 17. Oct. 23: the said sum of 292l. 2s. 1½d. being certain fines which are to be paid into the Exchequer by certain tenants in the Richmond fee and Marquess fee, parcel of the Barony of Kendal.
