Jan.11 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to the Clerk of the Signet for a Privy Seal for 137l. 18s. 0d. to John Rushworth for his disbursements in attending the Attorney General and the King's Counsel in all causes relating to the King's revenue in the Exchequer and in expediting proceedings concerning same, and in making enquiry what warrants were granted for patents or commissions which might intrench upon the King's revenues: also for 300l. as royal bounty for his pains herein. Jan. 28 Warrant from Treasurer Southampton to Francis Stephens to arrest Thomas Sutton, of Banbury, co. Oxon, as a great obstructor of the Excise revenue in that towne, "having bin very instrumentall in writeing papers which were posted up in Banbury which tended very much to the disadvantage of the collection of the Excise," and also for having the Excise officer arrested and carried away prisoner whilst in the execution of his office: as appears by an affidavit of Sir Thomas Penniston, surviving Farmer of Excise in that county.
