The Treasury Lords to the Commissioners of the Aids for co. Warwick concerning the duplicates of the [rolls of the] Royal Aid of co. Warwick, which have been lately tendered to Baron Spelman by John Clement, of London, wire drawer, who said they were sent up to him by a carrier from the Receiver of that county, whereas the duplicates that are to remain in the Exchequer ought not to pass through the hands of the Receiver; but to be sent directly to the Exchequer by some person direct from the Commissioners [of Aids for the particular county], which messenger is to make oath before a baron that he received them from one of the Commissioners, and that they are not altered since he so received them. Report to the King from the Treasury Lords on the petition of Sir Thomas Player, Chamberlain of London, representing that he had been instrumental in procuring for His Majesty sums of money [by way of loan] amounting to 350,000l., and that in the time of the plague and since the burning of London, when there was more than ordinary difficulty in that service, he was forced to maintain several clerks and other instruments to the charge of 200l. per an. out of his private purse. Find that Player was instrumental in the following loans from the city, viz. in 1661, April and May, 60,000l. on the security of the One Months' assessment; in 1661–2, Feb. and March, 100,077l. 10s. 0d. on the 18 months' tax; in 1663, Sept. and Oct., 50,000l. on the last two of the four subsidies; in 1664, June and August, 100,000l. on the Hearth money; in 1664, November to January, a further 100,000l. on Hearth money. For services hereon Player received gratifications of 500l., 1,300l., 500l., 1,000l. and 1,000l. respectively. It further appears from Player's certificate that several other great sums of money at several times were advanced for the King's service, amounting in the whole to above 340,000l. for which he alleges no allowance has been made him.
