Chester, Flint, Denbigh, Merioneth, Carnarvon and Anglesea on his paying a moiety thereof, the loss being due to the failure and insolvency of John Harrison, late the Chester carrier deceased, and Foulks being a diligent officer and instrumental in discovering and preventing frauds in his district from the commencement of the Duty.

Hans Hamilton's Regiment now going on the Expedition with your Lordship, as he is at present employed about particular affairs relating to the service of the Forces, which will require his stay in England. Same to the [Principal] Officers of the Ordnance to report on the enclosed memorial [missing] relating to 500 barrels of powder which the Duke of Ormonde, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, desires may be sent thither. What will the cost, freight and charges amount to? Ibid.
Same to the same. The Lord Treasurer approves of Mr. Bertie acting until June 30 next and receiving and paying money as Treasurer of the Ordnance, he being ready to comply therewith to avoid complications in the accounts. Ibid.
Same to the Board of Greencloth. My Lord has perused your state of the arrears due to the late King's servants in the Cofferer's Office. Please make out a list of such of the said servants as are now out of employment and most necessitous. Ibid.
Same to the Prizes Commissioners. My Lord has signed a warrant upon the Customs Commissioners' report relating to mean small French wine and linen, woollen and other French Goods. I enclose said warrant and report and also the Excise Commissioners' report [all missing] relating to Spanish prize brandy. Ibid.

May 19. Royal warrant to the Clerk of the Signet for a privy seal to authorise Treasurer Godolphin to cause to be paid over to James Brydges, appointed by patent of the 10th inst. to be Paymaster General of the Forces acting in conjunction with the Allies, all unapplied moneys and tallies in the hands of Charles Fox, late same : to be by said Brydges applied to the service of the said Forces in such manner as they were to have been so applied by said Fox. The said Fox is hereby to be discharged of same. Queen's Warrant Book XXII, p. 406.

Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Trustees for Circulating Exchequer Bills to apply 1300l. of the moneys in their hands to satisfy one year's salary to April 27 last to themselves and the several officers employed under them in the management of that [Circulation] affair : viz. Lionell Herne as secretary and accomptant ; Samuell Edwards as cashier, William Parrot as housekeeper ; and a cleaner. Money Book XVII, p. 372.
Same by same to the Customs Cashier to pay 50l. to Michael Cole, who some time since presented an account to the Lord Treasurer of abuses in the exportation of rice, molasses and several other goods from the English Plantations to foreign markets to the prejudice of the customs revenue and trade of this kingdom "and for which a remedy is provided by the late Act of Parliament 7-8 Wm. Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Customs Commissioners to order their officers at Penzance to land and warehouse the wines and other prize goods in the ship Pearl now at Mounts Bay, to remain under the joint custody of the Customs and the Admiralty till sold.
Prefixing : report by said Commissioners on the memorial of Mr. Warters, Solicitor of the Rights and Perquisites of Admiralty. The said ship was brought into Mounts Bay by connivance and collusion and was there seized by the Ann sloop privateer belonging to Mr. Oriott and Mr. Glover, merchants of London. Treasurer Godolphin to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland to report on the enclosed petition [missing] of James Fontaine praying a pension on the Irish Establishment in consideration of his good service last summer in his defence against a French privateer and [of] those remote parts of Ireland where he lives from the insults of the French. Treasury reference to the Agents for Taxes of the petition of John Mason, late Receiver General of Taxes for co. Cambridge and Isle of Ely, on behalf of himself and John Pickering one of his sureties, setting forth their deplorable circumstances and that by a late Act of Parliament the Lord Treasurer is authorised to compound with them : therefore praying to be admitted to compound for the remainder of his debt. Warrant by Treasurer Godolphin to the Surveyor General of Crown Lands for a particular of the Hundred of Edisbury in order to a new lease thereof to Earl Rivers.
Prefixing : said Surveyor General's report on said Earl's petition for same. The premises petitioned for consist firstly of the agistment, herbage, pasturage and pannage of the Forest of Mondren alias Delamer co. Chester and of certain enclosed lands called the Old Lodge or Old Pale Walk and the New Pale within said Forest : and secondly the Hundred of Edisbury co. Chester.
For the first item the petitioner must apply to the Duke of Leeds, in trust for whom a lease thereof was granted 1696 June 16 to Charles Bertie et al. Warrants not Relating to Money XIX, pp. 6-7.
May 21. Royal warrant to the Clerk of the Signet for a privy seal for the issue to John How, Paymaster of the Guards and Garrisons, of the sums remaining unissued of the 98,969l. 10s. 0d. for 5000 additional men to supply the 5000 men ordered to serve in the Fleet as by the privy seal of March 14 last (viz. 11,844l. for levy money and 87,125l. 10s. 0d. for maintenance) ; on which privy seal several sums have been issued to Charles Fox, Paymaster of the Forces acting with the Allies, but the Queen is resolved that the future payments for the said 5000 men shall be made to and by the said How. May 22. Royal warrant to Visct. FitzHardinge, Treasurer of the Chamber, to pay Charles Lucas, Closet Keeper of the Chapel Royal, the like allowance for riding charges for his attendance on the Queen at Windsor, Hampton Court or in any of the royal progresses as are given to a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal viz. 6s. a day for the first week of the Queen's being abroad and 3s. a day for the remaining time : and likewise 3s. a day for every day he hath or shall attend on the Queen at Kensington, in regard he is obliged to constant attendance when the Queen is there. Same to Mr. Wilcox, [Surveyor General of Woods,] to wait on the Duke of Bolton to know if he will agree to a feigned issue in the Exchequer Court concerning the windfalls in New Forest which he claims ; as advised by the Attorney General. Ibid.
Same to Hen. St. John. In pursuance of a direction from the Earl of Galway dated Lisbon Jan. 26 last William Churchill and Richard Harnage have shipped for the uses of the Forces in Portugal 10,000 shirts, 10,000 cravats, 10,000 pairs of shoes, 10,000 pairs of stockings and 2000 hats for Dragoons amounting to 4724l. 19s. 0d. which with charges amounts to 5000l. The Comptrollers for Stating the Accounts of the Army have certified the Lord Treasurer that same is reasonable to be allowed. From Auditor Harley's observations on the accounts of the Works for the year ended 1698 March 31 it appears that the last Instructions for managing the Office of Works (which bear date 1662-3 Jan. 1) cannot be a sufficient authority for making the allowances claimed pursuant thereto ; because the validity of these Instructions ceased upon the demise of Charles II. (4) A certificate of what will remain at Michaelmas next of the Duties on Salt and Stamped Paper which are granted for a fund to pay 8 per cent. annuities to the East India Company after deducting so much as will clear said annuities to that time.
