This day my Lord Treasurer's commands were received from Newmarket for entering his agreement to a proposal of Sir Theodore Janssen which had been transmitted to his lordship for remitting 25,000l. sterling to the Duke of Savoy at the exchange rate of 58d. for a crown of 82 sols, money of Piedmont, his bills being payable at 60 days' date and to be dated Sept. 23 last: the said 25,000l. being to complete 50,000l. which her Majesty advances to the said Duke over and above his subsidy. |

Likewise for issuing the said 25,000l. to Mr. Brydges on the unsatisfied order in his name for extraordinaries of the war not provided for by Parliament: to be paid over to the said Sir Theodore Janssen as in satisfaction of his aforesaid bills given on the 30 Sept. but dated Sept. 23. |

Likewise for issuing 8000l. [to the Treasurer of the Navy] on the Ordinary of the Navy. |

Likewise for 30l. to be paid to Mrs. Fitzhugh to carry her to Ireland: but the acquittance is to express that she is to make no further application to the Queen or the Treasury upon pretence of any service done by her late deceased husband Capt. Fitzhugh. Treasury Minute Book XV, p. 277. |

Lord Halifax comes in and the officers of the Exchequer are called in. [As a result of the conversation held] my Lord Treasurer will take care that additional allowances be made for payment of the Annuities but expects that books be kept in the Tellers' Offices for entering every particular payment as made. Issue 2,700l. to Mr. Brydges on the order in his name for the 5000 men for the service of the King of Spain anno 1706: the same being to be paid over by him for levy money for 900 men sent from Ireland to fill up several Regiments in Catalonia: |

and 1072l. more to him for levy money for 108 men added to each of the three Regiments sent from Ireland to Spain; to fill them up to the English Establishments: at 3l. a man. |

The Customs Commissioners are called in. Their report of the 13th Sept. 1706 concerning the [Customs] Comptroller's office is read. The draft of instructions annexed [to the said report] is also read, [all which my Lord directs Secretary Lowndes to order] the Comptroller General to peruse them to-morrow and if he have no objection my Lord will order matters according to that report and draft. |

Mr. Brydges and Sir Henry Furnese are called in. Sir Henry presents a proposal as follows for remittances to Portugal, viz. to remit to Portugal for the use of the Forces there 150,000 pieces of Eight in specie or gold of the same standard as pistols are, the pistols to be computed at 4 pieces of Eight each: amounting to 35,000l. or in current money of Portugal 116,666 milreis 666 reis at 6s. per milrei [equivalent to] 35,000l.

My Lord Treasurer agrees to this proposal provided that every thousand pieces of Eight one with another be of due weight with current pieces of Eight at Lisbon. Ibid., p. 282. |

The Attorney General comes in: the Navy Commissioners having acquainted my Lord that Mr. Higgins has no colour of title to Chatham Dock my Lord Treasurer thinks he has no colour for any consideration. |

My Lord upon speaking with the Attorney General about the expense of Mr. Wells relating to the presentation [advowson] of Aldgate resolves to allow to Mr. Wells so much as was laid out by him [in the litigation] before his lordship had directed that the Queen should be at no further charge therein: and Mr. Borret is to make a state thereof accordingly. |

My Lord Treasurer approves Sir Christopher Wren's report concerning the rooms for the Tellers, provided that care be taken that the windows and everything else be made secure: and [he] directs Sir Christopher to cause the work to be done [struck through] to examine who were the proper officers to do this work in the Exchequer and to report same to my Lord. |

[My Lord directs] 6000l. to the Treasurer of the Navy for bills of exchange; out of which the [Navy] Commissioners are to direct the 2140l. 10s. 4d. to be applied for satisfying a bill to Erasmus Lewis for naval stores supplied by the King of Denmark to Sir Stafford Fairborn and Sir Edward Whitaker. |
