May 6. Treasurer Godolphin to the Earl of Sunderland. In reply to yours of the 23rd inst. I have no objection to the Transports Commissioners appointing Gilbert Wardlaw to be their agent at 300l. a year salary to go along with the transports from time to time, when they go to Lisbon or into the Mediterranean (as has been proposed by Sir Cloudesly Shovell). Same to the Attorney or Solicitor General for a great seal for an annuity, yearly rent or pension of 3000l. per an. to James, Duke of Queensberry out of the Post Office revenue : during the Queen's life as from Lady day 1707 for 99 years terminable on his life : in consideration of many good, faithful and acceptable services and as a mark of royal favour. Same to Edward Harley and Arthur Maynwaring, Auditors of Imprests, to allow to Charles Bertie, in his account as late Treasurer and Paymaster of the Ordnance, the sum of 320l. (105l. in silver and 200 guineas), which between Saturday Nov. 25 and Monday Nov. 27 in 1699 was stolen when his Office in the Tower was broken open ; which was supposed to be done by the new levies and recruits then lodged in the Tower; the same being the running cash for paying small orders of the Board of Ordnance usually locked up in the press of the said Office for the more immediate despatch of the service : the facts being sworn to by William Hubbald, Bertie's chief clerk, of whose fidelity and integrity he had had long experience. Royal warrant dated St. James's to Treasurer Godolphin to direct the Principal Commissioners for Prizes to pay 435l. 11s. 0d. for charges and 1748l. 1s. 3d. for the moiety value to the captors of the 4 French ships St. Paul, Tryumphant, Bon Secour and Jolly, taken prize by Capt. George Camock, Commander of her Majesty's ship Speedwell and Capt. George Sanders, Commander of her Majesty's ship Shoreham and carried into Ireland, being laden with provisions and designed for the West Indies which the said Camock was ordered to convoy to the Leeward Isles and to deliver the provisions therein to Col. Parkes, Governor of those islands, in order to their being distributed by him to the poor distressed inhabitants of Nevis and St. Christopher as royal bounty to them “who had suffered very much by a descent made on those islands by the French” ; and to deliver the goods and ammunition of the said prizes to said Governor for their better defence from any future attempt of the enemy; but to sell the ships' tackle and apparel in the said islands : but soon after Camock sailed with them two of the ships viz. the St. Paul and Bon Secour were separated from him in a great storm and were unhappily stranded on the coast of Ireland.
