Mr. Brydges acquaints my Lord Treasurer that having attended the Bank in order to the borrowing some money for the extraordinary services represented [memorialised for] by him on the 29th Dec. last, upon [security of] a deposit of tallies on the General Mortgage anno 1709, they are willing to advance the sum of 25,000l. on the said deposit to enable him to satisfy bills of exchange, provided they may be repaid with interest after the rate of 6 per cent. per an. from the time of advancing to the time of repayment out of the first money to be paid into the Bank upon the intended Lottery or in Exchequer Bills within the space of two months from the time of advancing as aforesaid.

Mr. Brydges having represented to my Lord Treasurer the pressing occasion there is for a sum of 30,000l. in further part of the particulars amounting to 70,000l. contained in his memorial of the 29th Dec. last (of which the Bank has already advanced 25,000l.), my Lord is pleased to agree that if the Bank will advance the said further sum of 30,000l. on a deposit of tallies on the General Mortgage anno 1709 they shall be repaid out of the first money to be paid into the Bank upon the intended Lottery or in Exchequer Bills within two months from the time of advancing, together with 6 per cent. per an. interest. The said 30,000l. is to be applied as follows: viz.

for horses lost by the English Horse and Dragoons in the Low Countries. This item is to be made good out of the savings of last year upon the Troops of Augmentation 6,530 0 0

Letters [of direction] are read and approved for 206,863l. 16s. 5d. to be issued to Mr. Walpole [as Treasurer of the Navy]: out of loans on Land Tax anno 1710 to be made by said Walpole himself; and is for three months' Course to the Navy and Victualling when they [the orders for repayment of said loans] can be disposed of at par.
A letter [of direction] is read and approved for 26,444l. 8s. 10d. to Mr. Brydges [Paymaster General of the Forces Abroad]: out of loans to be made by Sir Theodore Janssen on the said fund [of Land Tax anno 1710 and is to be] for two months' subsidy to the Duke of Savoy.
A letter [of direction] is read and approved for 82,777l. 2s. 0d. to Mr. Micklethwayte [Treasurer and Paymaster of the Transports]: out of loans to be made by himself on credit of said fund [the Land Tax anno 1710]: without interest: and is intended to be applied to satisfy three months' Course to the Transports when they [the said Micklethwayte's Land Tax tallies] can be disposed of at par.
[Send a] letter to the Navy Commissioners that my Lord Treasurer having provided for the Course of the Navy and Victualling so far as the funds have hitherto permitted, he directs them to make and send to him an estimate of what may be necessary to be supplied to the head of Wages between this [day] and Midsummer next.
[My Lord signs a letter of direction for] 71,249l. 9s. 8d. to the Treasurer of the Navy for bills of exchange, necessary money and extraordinary necessary money of the Victualling: to be issued out of the Lottery money.
[My Lord reads] Mr. Medina's memorial for payment of the remainder of money due to him for extraordinaries of last year. [The payment thereof is] ordered out of tallies on the Land Tax.
[Send word to] Mr. Walpole to be here to-morrow morning and my Lord will speak to him about the memorial presented by Mr. Brydges in relation to Col. Windsor's Regiment.
Mr. Brydges is called in and his memorial is read. My Lord Treasurer directs him to attend again to-morrow morning when Mr. Walpole is here and that what papers are necessary to be considered when he is here be looked out against that time. Treasury Minute Book XVII, pp. 91–2.
Jan. 25,

Present: Lord Treasurer.
Mr. Howe's memorial is read for the extraordinary sums paid by him for the service of the war in the year 1709. My Lord Treasurer takes notice therein of an article of 2,013l. 6s. 8d. paid to Mr. Peter for small clothing for the Forces ordered to attend the Expedition. Mr. Walpole being present acquaints my Lord that they were sent to Spain with General Wills and were ordered to be delivered to the Commissary of the Queen's Stores [at any place] wherever he [Wills] should land. My Lord Treasurer [informs them that he] will speak with General Stanhope that care may be taken of them [the said clothing] for the Queen's account.
[My Lord signs a letter of direction for] 16,376l. 16s. 2d. to Mr. How [Paymaster of the Guards and Garrisons] for extraordinaries: [to be issued] out of the Lottery money: and for 3,000l. upon account to refund money advanced by Receivers of the Land Tax [towards recruiting &c.].
Mr. Brydges' memorial [for money for the Forces Abroad &c.] is read and orders are made [and endorsed] thereupon. Ibid., p. 93.
Jan. 27. Present: Lord Treasurer, Chancellor of the Exchequer.
[My Lord orders that] Quarter Master Anderson, who was taken prisoner at the battle of Almanza, is to be paid out of the fond for the said prisoners to wit during the time he remained a prisoner and two months longer: and that he be sent back to Spain to be provided for in his former post upon the first opportunity.
Mr. Walpole presents a memorial "from the Navy" [sic for money for the Navy], which being read several orders are [made and endorsed] thereupon. Ibid., p. 94.
Jan. 28. Present: Lord Treasurer.
My Lord Treasurer agrees that Mr. Carkesse be Secretary to the Customs Commissioners, but doth not think it a place to which the said Commissioners have any grounds [of right] to present. Desire the Commissioners to be here about this matter on Tuesday after noon.
The Commissioners of Sick and Wounded are called in and their memorial is read. Thereupon [my Lord] ordered [the issue to the Treasurer of the Navy for Thomas Savery, the Treasurer for Sick and Wounded, of five items as follows viz.] 329l. 0s. 4d., 7,000l.,1,567l. 13s. 7½d., 4,000l. and 4,000l.
Direct the Customs Commissioners to attend next Tuesday afternoon.
Direct the Victuallers to attend then about the salt remaining in the hands of the officers of the Customs in Scotland.
[Send a] letter to the [Principal] Officers of the Mint about [the] Trial of the Pyx of the Mint in Scotland.
Direct the Commissioners of the Transports to attend next Tuesday afternoon with Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Diamond. Ibid., p. 95.
