Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to the Directors &c. of the South Sea Company to permit Christopher Frederick Kreinberg, Resident in England of the Elector of Hanover and Duke of Zelle, to subscribe into South Sea Stock the sum of 9,375l. which (in the Act of 9 Anne, c. 15, for making good Deficiencies) is computed to remain due to said Elector upon account of subsidies for "their" Troops pursuant to a treaty dated 1696 May 14, "which sum appears to remain due and unsatisfied upon a warrant under the royal sign manual of the late King Wm. III. bearing date the 20–30 June 1697" and which is certified by the Auditors of Imprests not to have been paid or demanded to be allowed or paid by the Earl of Ranelagh (to whom the said warrant for payment was directed), and the said Elector by writing under his hand dated Nov 10 last having constituted said Kreinberg his special attorney to so subscribe said sum into said stock in the said Elector's name, "which being 10l. less than is computed by the said Act and contained in the said warrant is supposed to have been a mistake in drawing the said instrument." Lottery: and is intended to be paid over to the Sieurs Vander Kaa and Castagno in full of 40,899l. 19s. 1d. pursuant to the royal warrant of April 8 last for the advance on their contracts for furnishing bread and bread waggons in the Low Countries this campaign. J. Taylour (in the absence of the Treasury Secretaries) to the Revenue Commissioners, Ireland. The Lord Treasurer understands that it will give some ease and prevent disputes if Mr. Temple Brisco, Collector of Wexford, were removed to some other port. You are to remove him as soon as may be to some equal post. Out Letters (Ireland) IX, p. 281.
June 13. Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to Edward Wilcox, Surveyor General of Woods, Trent South, to pay out of wood sales 144l. 6s. 1½d. to Edward Progers in full of his disbursements and demands for taxes, repairs and hay for the deer in her Majesty's Middle Park at Hampton Court from 26 Nov. 1709 to 16 Oct. 1711. "And whereas great inconveniences may arise to her Majesty unless a stop be put to the demands of such persons who having offices of profit and being taxed for the same do insert such their taxes in the Bills of Necessary Disbursements which they exhibit, to be paid by her Majesty, these are further to authorise and require you in all cases where bills shall be referred to your examination and any such demand shall be inserted therein to take care to expunge out of such bills the sums that shall be so demanded and not to pass any examination thereupon for the future."
Prefixing: said Progers' bills and report dated Feb. 21 last by said Wilcox thereon, said account including an item of 111l. 15s. 0d. for Land Tax. The receipts for the taxes are given for so much assessed on lands lying in her Majesty's Park, which, according to the opinion of the present Lord Keeper when Attorney General, are not liable to any assessment by the Act of Parliament for Land Tax: and upon examining the books of assessment at Hampton Court I find the said taxes assessed and charged on Mr. Progers [on his personal salary] as Ranger of the said Park. On a like report of mine of 9 June 1712 [sic ? for 1710] the Lord High Treasurer did say the taxes should not be allowed him for the future, the same being assessed on him as Ranger, and lands in her Majesty's possession not being chargeable therewith. Taylour to Sir Isaac Newton to report on the enclosed representation [missing] from the Privy Council in Ireland desiring some alteration to be made in a late Order in Council and the Proclamation intended thereby, relating to the currency of foreign coins in Ireland. Memorandum: papers not mentioned in the letter were a printed Proclamation and letter from Mr. Southwell. Out Letters (General) XX, p. 214.
Same to Mr. Brydges. It is necessary that those Regiments under your pay which are now here and ordered to march should have money issued to them to clear their quarters and enable them to march. The Lord Treasurer directs you to bring a demand for the sum necessary for this service. Ibid.
Treasury reference to the Taxes Commissioners of the petition of William Andrews, one of the securities of William Kent, late Receiver General for Co. Lanes, who died intestate and insolvent, so that the whole debt [to the Queen on Kent's receivership] fell on petitioner; therefore praying allowance of 1,005l. due to Kent for extraordinary expenses in his receivership and also for leave to take remedy at law against Kent's debtors. Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to James Brydges, Paymaster General of the Forces Abroad, by virtue of the privy seal of 1711 Dec. 11, supra, Calendar of Treasury Books, Vol. XXV, p. 569, to assign and transfer on the 23rd of this instant June, to the persons as follows the sum of 2,197l. 3s. 3½d. of South Sea Stock as part of the 409,600l. 7s. 6½d. which said Brydges was directed by the Lord Treasurer's warrant of July 26 last, supra, ibid., p. 377, to subscribe into said South Sea Stock: and is in part of 83,934l. 16s. 3d. which said Brydges formerly certified to be due for the whole of the offreckonings of the Regiments in Flanders to 1711 Dec. 22.

Taylour (in the absence of the Treasury Secretaries) to the Navy Commissioners to make forth a Navy bill on the Navy Treasurer for impresting to Thomas Micklethwaite, Treasurer and Paymaster of the Transport service, the sum of 75,250l. 3s. 1d. directed by the Lord Treasurer's warrant of May 31 last, supra, p. 298, to be transferred to him in South Sea Stock to pay bills registered in Course on the Transport service before 29 Sept. 1711. You are to assign same for payment out of the 1,421,274l. 14s. 4d. in South Sea Stock, subscribed ut supra, p. 252. Disposition Book XXI, pp. 282–3.
Treasury reference to the Barons of the Exchequer, Scotland, of the petition of John Stuart shewing that he was formerly underkeeper of the Signet, the Great Seal and last [the Seal] of the Exchequer in Scotland of which the salary and perquisites amounted to 150l. per an., which said employments have been taken from him since the Union; which (with the loss sustained by him and his father at the Revolution) renders him unable to support himself and family: therefore praying some equivalent employment in the Customs. Royal warrant dated St. James's to Spencer Compton to pay 300l. to Edward Godfrey to be immediately remitted to Keneth, Lord Duffus (late Commander of one of our ships of war), now a prisoner in Dunkirk, to enable him to discharge his debts there and to repair home. Queen's Warrant Book XXV, p. 254.
Same to the Attorney General and Solicitor General for a great seal to constitute and appoint Henry Smith to be Treasurer and Receiver of all the moneys authorised by the Act 9 Anne, c. 17, for several Duties on coals for building 50 new churches in and about London, Westminster and suburbs, and by the Act 10 Anne, c. 20, for enlarging the time for same and for rebuilding the parish church of St. Mary, Woolnoth: the issues to be made in accordance with the directions of the Commissioners for said Act. Same to the Attorney General to acknowledge satisfaction upon record of two judgments obtained in Easter 1711 in the Exchequer against Caleb Wade, Commander of the Queen's ship Adventure, for running wine, brandy and other goods in the Downs; upon the information of Robert Mews, the carpenter's mate, and Thomas Craniford, the boatswain's mate, of the said ship; the said Wade declaring that the said verdicts were obtained against him whilst he was absent in service on the sea and by the evidence of two sailors in his ship, one a mutineer, the other a deserter, and that he was no ways concerned in running any manner of goods whatsoever. Wade is first to pay the informer's moiety of said forfeiture, being 229l. 6s. 0d., and likewise the 79l. 18s. 8d., being the Queen's charges therein. Ibid., pp. 256–7.

Spotswood, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia] to take to himself 150l. per an. for two years further out of the revenue of 2s. per hogshead [and is to be] towards finishing the house which was begun to be built for the Governor of Virginia: as in continuation of the royal letter of 1710 April 18, supra, Calendar of Treasury Books, Vol. XXIV, p. 240: "and we do also hereby earnestly recommend to you and the Assembly there the granting such further sum as will be sufficient to finish and make habitable the house aforesaid": he having represented that the Queen's commands therein have been pursued with the greatest cheerfulness, yet such hath been the state of that colony by the disaster of war and the low ebb of the prices of tobacco and of the public treasure there that that Colony hath not been in a capacity to complete the same and the emoluments of that Government being much impaired they have prayed such a continuance of the said yearly sum. Treasury reference to the Attorney General of the petition of Henry Lovibond shewing that he was for some time Surveyor to the late Queen Dowager and was at great expense in collecting and copying original surveys, and the sudden death of the said Queen deprived him of the means of repayment, "and that some advantage does now accrue for searches of the surveys from those who have got the reversionary interest granted to them by the Crown": therefore praying that if the original surveys be demanded of him he may have satisfaction for his charge and trouble in making and purchasing the said collection. Bissell shewing that upon an Address by the House of Commons the Attorney General was directed to take proper methods for quieting and settling the borough of Portsmouth in the enjoyment of its ancient rights and privileges, in prosecuting which the petitioner was employed as agent and has expended therein 300l. above what he received; and there is also due to the Clerk of the Crown Office 211l. touching these proceedings, for which [sum] petitioner is answerable and is hard pressed, Mr. Borret alleging that he has no money to pay petitioner although he employed him in that matter "and the petitioner having by this prosecution to defend the legal Aldermen of the said borough created to himself very many enemies": therefore praying relief. Warrant by Treasurer Oxford to James Brydges, Paymaster of the Forces Abroad, to assign and transfer 32,016l. 5s. 2d. of South Sea Stock to the following persons, clothiers of the Regiments in Spain and Portugal: out of the 409,600l. 7s. 6½d. subscribed into the said Stock by said Brydges by virtue of the Lord Treasurer's warrant of 1711 July 26 [ut supra, Calendar of Treasury Books, Vol. XXV, p. 377]: the said 32,016l. 5s. 2d. being in part of the 38,665l. 10s. 2½d. lately certified by said Brydges to be the whole of the offreckonings of the Regiments in Spain and Portugal to the respective days to which their muster rolls are returned.
