Sherwyn of the King's estate and interest in the estate as
follows in Bushmead, co. Beds., in which estate said Sherwyn
is become lawfully interested : same formerly belonging to
Richard Gery, late of Bushmead, who did, upon the marriage
of his eldest son, about 8 Car. I., make a settlement of his
estate in Bushmead and elsewhere, and therein made use of
several persons as Trustees, whereof Sir James Harrington
was one, all the said Harrington's lands being now forfeited
to the Crown for his traitorous offences, "saving the right of
others for whom he stood trusted, so as the conveyance by
which he became so interested in trust were enrolled in our
Exchequer within a time limited by the Act of Parliament,
which in this case was omitted, and by means thereof the said
Rich. Sherwyn's title (as he is advised) is (as to so much)
defective, which was not till of late discovered by the said

Coppice in Hanger Walk in Whittlewood Forest and Prentice

are fitting to be felled this season and exposed to sale for the
Queen's service : and further that the condition of the said
coppices is so bad and ruinous that for the fencing and enclosing
of the same a sufficient and convenient quantity of stakes will
be wanting. The said Council has therefore for the Queen's
service desired my warrant to the King's Woodward and the
aforesaid regarders of Her Majesty's [said] respective Forest[s]
to mark and set out such number of trees as will be necessary
for the gateing, stileing, cabbening and staking the said
coppices. You are hereby so authorised and directed
accordingly, giving an account of the timber so felled.

of Whittlewood and Salcey Forests, and the rest of the officers
there. John Hall, the Queen's Surveyor and Woodward
General as above, has represented to me that there are divers
roots of trees heretofore felled in Whittlewood and Salcey
Forests, co. Northampton and Bucks, which roots do much
prejudice to the vert of said forests and obstruct the growth
of underwood and deface the ridings and therefore desires
leave to dig up and remove same for the future good of the
Crown as well as the said Queen's present interest in said
forests (the great trees therein only excepted) being settled
upon Her Majesty for life as part of her jointure. You are
hereby to permit him to dig up and dispose of such roots as
he thinks fit and without account, but provided he commit no
waste nor disturb the game of deer.

Warrant from [Treasurer Danby] to Sir John Osborne, Lord
Treasurer's Remembrancer of the Exchequer. There are
several late convictions of Recusants estreated into the Court
of the Exchequer from the several counties of Berks, Cornwall,
Devon, Dorset, Yorks East Riding, Essex, Hereford,
London, Lincoln, Middlesex, Oxford, Salop, Stafford, Somerset,
Southampton, Sussex, Westmorland, Wilts., Worcester
and Norfolk, which [estreats] have been delivered over into
your office by Schedule of Pipe for Recusants. You are hereby
authorised to cause several commissions, with instructions to
be thereto annexed, to be issued and directed to the persons
whose names are underwritten, appointed His Majesty's Commissioners
in this behalf for such county respectively,
empowering them or any three or more of them to take and
seize into His Majesty's hands two third part of all the lands,
tenements, hereditaments, leases and farms of the Recusants
in the said Schedules of Pipe respectively named in the several
counties, and to reduce into severalty for His Majesty's use
two third parts of all their said lands, tenements, hereditaments,
leases and farms, leaving to every of the said Recusants
his chief mansion house as part of his said third part, according
to the statute in that behalf : His Majesty having declared his
royal pleasure to refuse the 20l. per month imposed on such
Recusants for not coming to church, and to accept of the two
thirds part of their lands, tenements, hereditaments, leases
and farms in lieu and full recompense thereof, according to
the statute of 3 James I. The said commissions are to be made
returnable as soon as the Commissioners or any three or more
of them can speed the same and at the farthest on the morrow
of Ascension Day. Writs of attendance are to be directed to
the several sheriffs in usual form, requiring them to attend
His Majesty's Commissioners with juries to enquire concerning
the premises as the said Commissioners or any three of them
shall direct. By the said commissions respectively all mayors,

Instructions from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners
in reply to their representation of the 8th inst. As to your
report on Mr. Fanshawe's papers I have given you directions
by a new reference on the said papers. As to the question of
entries by you admitted for several coal laden vessels bound
for coast shipment but which by distress [of weather] or
otherwise have gone over sea and there discharged their lading,
for which the Customs officers have accordingly given certificate
of the payment of Custom [such certificate] to be annexed to
the bonds, yet notwithstanding said bonds are put in process
for recovery of the forfeiture ; as to all which you pray my
direction, I direct that process be stopped in all cases where
the Customs duty is already paid. As to the present condition
of the port of Truro by reason the Collector has
absented himself the Customer there is to officiate as
Collector till further order. As to Mr. Stockdale's letter from
Dover, concerning foreign vessels trading under colour of
English passports, you are to write the Collector of Dover port
to recall all such passes unless they prove sufficiently to belong
to English. As to Mr. Breton's proposal concerning the landing
of 50 or 60 pipes of Canary wines out of an unfree ship he is
to be permitted to unlade in the Downs, paying only such
Custom as if imported in an English ship, oath being first
made that the vessel was not bound for any port in England.
As to the information concerning the irregularity of the officers
of Rye in clearing a ship to the Plantations without unlading
and passing prohibited goods, further proof must be made [to
me] herein against the patent officers before anything more be
done therein.

Colvile, assigned 400l. thereof to the aforesaid Joseph Hornby,
with interest at 6 per cent. thereon from 1671. Oct. 17, which
[principal sum] said Hornby assigned to said Berry. The
principal sums assigned as above amount to 1,240l. I have
received His Majesty's directions for the speedy payment of
said 1,240l. with the interest due on the said 140l. assigned by
Rowe. You are accordingly to pay same by tallies on
Abr. Anselme, John Perry and Edward Buckley, contractors
