Mar. 2. Charles Bertie to the Lord Privy Seal. It appears to Treasurer Danby under the hands of several goldsmiths and by Sir Robt. Howard's certificate that there is money of the last subsidy sufficient in the hands of the said goldsmiths and in the Exchequer to satisfy Mr. Boon's order for 1,000l. with interest thereon. Therefore Treasurer Danby desires that Mr. Boon's caveat may be withdrawn, so that Mr. Northcote may proceed in his privy seal for his discharge. Out Letters (General) p. 43.
Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Cashier to pay 50l. to William Thornbury for one year ending 1674, Sept. 29, on his fee as one of the Customers of the Great Customs London port. Same from same to Sir Peter Killegrew and John Tregeagle, Receivers for the Duchy of Cornwall, to pay to the Queen Consort's Treasurer and Receiver General for her use 595l. 10s. 2d. in full satisfaction and discharge of eleven years' arrears (all taxes deducted) to 1675, Sept. 29, on the rent of 7l. 16s. 9d., payable for the manor of Godlega and Fennotry, co. Devon, and the rent of 50l. payable by the city of Coventry for the manor of Chellesmere, co. Warwick, which premises were (with other things) by a great seal of 1664, June 13, granted to Denzell, Lord Holles et al in trust for the Queen ; but by reason the said rents are part of the Duchy of Cornwall they have been ever since received by the Receivers of said Duchy, and so accompted for to the King : the King having by privy seal of July 30 last ordered that same shall be satisfied to the Queen. The said sum is to be forthwith paid, notwithstanding any charge charged on the said Duchy revenues since 1664, June 13. Money Book (General) pp. 50-1.

Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Customs Commissioners to permit the shipment by the Admiralty Lords of a supply of apparel for 1,110 soldiers, viz., one coat, a pair of stockings and shoes, two shirts and two neck cloths for each soldier, to be sent to Tangier customs free. Mar. 8. Royal warrant to Treasurer Danby to give warrant to the officers of Windsor forest to fell 60 trees (30 out of Braywood, 20 out of Haslewood and 10 out of Hadneswood [Hadney's Wood]), not exceeding 100 loads in all, and to be taken with the least prejudice to the said woods : same to be employed in the rebuilding and repairing of Windsor Castle : the offal thereof to be accounted for before the Auditor for co. Royal warrant (with many corrections and interlineations) to the Attorney and Solicitor General for a great seal for a grant to Sir John Bendish, bart., James Roffey and John Canham of the farm of the Law duties from Oct. 22 last for 3 years (altered to) to 1680, May 1, inclusive : the advance money to be 10,000l., whereof 5,000l. to be paid on delivery of this warrant (altered to) is already paid, and 5,000l. on the passing of the lease under the great seal : the yearly rent to be 20,000l., payable by moieties May 1 and Nov. 1 respectively : the advance money to be repaid with 6 per cent. interest out of the two last payments (altered to) by 3,000l. out of the last payment but one, and 7,000l. out of the last payment : the Farmers to have 100l. a year as office rent : the Farmers to prosecute concealments, forfeitures, etc., and account for same on oath in the Exchequer, and to be allowed a moiety of the Receipts therefrom, excepting out of this the arrears for recognisances upon licences of alehouses and other arrears for which process is already issued : the Farmers to apply for defalcations and have power to appoint officers, etc., ut supra, p. 541. All powers of Receivers General, assistants or particular Receivers, appointed by the King and not by the Act of Parliament for said duties, are to cease from Oct. 23 last save for arrears due before that time. The Farmers to have the benefit of Receivers' securities ; to be empowered to collect their arrears at the end of their farm and to keep distinct books of account to be inspected as the Lord Treasurer shall appoint (see supra, pp. 431-541, and infra under dates 1676, April 16 and Sept. 21). Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the Receipt to make issues to Edward Backwell of the several sums of 125l. 9s. 4d. and 1,338l. 4s. 11d. as interest items as follow, in accordance with the patent of 1674, July 23, for two years' interest to the goldsmiths : it appearing by an account stated by Auditor Richard Aldworth and allowed by Treasurer Danby March 1 inst. that there is due to said Backwell 125l. 9s. 4d. for interest to 1674 Christmas, upon an order of loan No. 1 registered on the Customs for 1673, Lady day quarter, and assigned to him [for] 1,000l., and further 1,338l. 4s. 11d. for two years' interest to 1673, Sept. 29, at 6 per cent. on the 10,663l. 4s. 9d. due to said Backwell for his dividend of the surplusage due on the account of the late Farmers of the Customs for the year ended 1671, Michaelmas : which latter interest is authorised to be allowed to said Backwell by the privy seal of 1676, July 26. Mar. 10. Charles Bertie to Col. Birch to send to Treasurer Danby out of your books an abstract of the weekly receipts and payments of the Excise Commissioners and of the particular remain of each week to the present from the time that the receipt of the Excise was taken out of Mr. Kent's hands and put into the hands of said Commissioners. Reference to the Customs Commissioners of William Belamy's petition concerning 260 pipes of wine belonging to him aboard the Industry, Humphrey Polgreene [master], from the Canaries, which ship was by storm forced nigh Margate, where for preservation of the major part of the goods the said Belamy disbursed 225l. 6s. 8d., besides 300l. which the wines leaked, and by his diligence saved so much of the same that the King's duty on the wines saved amounted to 2,000l., being two-fifths of their cost. Warrant from Treasurer Danby to the King's Remembrancer to forbear process against Ellis Cooper, late Receiver General of Hearthmoney for Yorks, North and East Ridings and Hull on his debt of 330l. to the King for remitting which he has set forth several pretensions. Mar. 12. Treasurer Danby's subscription of a docquet dated 1676-7, Feb., of a grant to William Young, Esq., for the lives of the Duchess of Cleveland and Earl of Northumberland, of the custody of all his Majesty's palace or mansion house of Hampton Court and other the offices, fees, profits and advantages therewith formerly granted to said Young "as well in possession as reversion" during pleasure by the patent of 1669-70, Feb. 12, which patent is surrendered to his Majesty. Warrant from Treasurer Danby, dated from Wallingford House, to the Customs Commissioners to permit a parcel of pins to be shipped back to Hamburg, without duty inwards or outwards, same having been imported by Mr. Farrington from Hamburg, being intended for Lisbon : the Customs Commissioners having on a second reference reported that the merchant might have liberty to ship them back whence they came without payment of Custom either inward or outward, but not to make this kingdom a passage for prohibited goods to foreign parts, especially for such manufactures with which we might otherwise furnish them from hence. Reference to the Customs Commissioners of the petition of Arendt Meyer, a merchant of Bergen, in Norway, who bought several commodities at Rouen, but by reason of the war between the French King and his [Norwegian] Majesty, he could not find any ship bound homeward, and therefore put his goods on board the ship of Robert Gunter, of Wapping, which are seized by Tombs, a tidesurveyor, as being prohibited goods. Warrant from Treasurer Danby to Phillip Marsh, Receiver of the Customs, subsidies and additional duties on wines, vinegar and currants imported into London to pay over to the Treasurer of the Ordnance the money raised by extent on certain bonds as follow, the said bonds having been assigned to said Treasurer in lieu of the like value in tallies which said Treasurer had striken on the customs, viz., two several obligations, dated April 12 last, by Richard Ailey, Thomas Duncombe and Robt. Steeres, the one of the penalty of 150l. conditioned to pay 64l. 15s. 5d. at several days [now] past to the Receiver General of Customs for the new imposition on wines : the other with the penalty of 60l. conditioned to pay 26l. 8s. 4d. to same for the additional duty : on which bonds 68l. was levied by extent by the sheriffs of London upon said Ailay, which sum by order of the Exchequer Court of Hilary term last was directed to be paid to you, deducting 18d. in the for levying the same. There being a great debt due to the Band of Gentlemen Pensioners for wages and board wages, whereof above 6,000l. is registered on the First Fruits, which should have been paid in long since by William Prettyman, Esq. ; and Sir John Kirk, Receiver and Paymaster of said Band, understanding that Mr. Prettyman is endeavouring a privy seal to estall the said debt, prays on behalf of said Band that he may first be heard, lest by such privy seal the payment of the money to the use of said Band should be delayed or diverted to their prejudice. John Grise (the Lord Treasurer's ironmonger) at the Golden Cross in Newgate Street, desires that no grant may pass to Fairfax, a gentleman pensioner, or any other of the estate of Nicholas Grise, of Moortown, in the parish of Leeds, in Yorkshire, till he [John Grise] has notice at his said house and is heard. Mar. 14. Privy seal for 883l. 8s. 2d. to Samuel Pepys to be by him paid over to William, Earl of Inchiquin ; same being to be defalked and made good again to the King out of that part of the 57,200l. per an. establishment of Tangier (as by the privy seal of 1674, Dec. 23) which is payable for the pay or entertainment of said Earl of Inchiquin as Governor, Colonel and Captain of Tangier : viz., to be so defalced by two moieties thereof out of his pay due 1677, March 25, and June 24 respectively : memorials to be made in the Office of the Auditor of the Receipt of such defalcations to be so made : the present payment to be as an advance to said Earl upon his humble suit for the same. Privy seal for the discharge of Nathaniel, Bishop of Durham, of the sum of 182l. 2s. 1d., being the Tenths payable by him (as appears by certificate dated Feb. 23 last from Brook Bridges, an Auditor of First Fruits and Tenths) for one year ended 1674, Dec. 25 (the Tenths for the precedent year being accomptable for by the Dean and Chapter of Durham) said sum being hereby remitted "in regard as we are informed the said bishop was not restored to his temporalities till in or about Nov., 1674." Treasurer Danby's subscription of a docquet of a pardon to Walter Littleton, gent., for the death and killing of John Gipps, he being found guilty of manslaughter upon his trial for the said fact at the last assizes held at East Grinstead for co. Money warrant for so much of the sum of 2,531l. 9s. 10d as is not already payable to Sir Robert Vyner for two years' interest (in accordance with the patent of 1674, July 23, for two years' interest to the goldsmiths) on 20,169l. 18s. 6d., payable upon orders of loan not comprehended in the account of interest due to said Vyner to 1674, June 25 ; of which 2,531l. 8s. 9d. for interest, the sum of 111l. 3s. 0d. arises by making interest into principal every six months : the account as to the present item being certified by the Auditor of the Receipt the 8th inst. Same for 922l. 7s. 9d. to Dr. William Sancroft, Dean of St. Paul's, London, in settlement for divers parcels of land belonging to the Deanery of St. Pauls [of a yearly value] amounting to 34l. 3s. 3d. per an., which were in 1669 enclosed and taken into the new fort near Tilbury, in Essex, for which the King was to pay 683l. 5s. 0d., together with the yearly profits thereof from the date of enclosing same, which for seven years to Sept. 29 last amounts to 239l. 2s. 9d., making 922l. 7s. 9d. in all : same to be paid out of the moneys arising by the sale of fee farm rents, viz., out of the moneys payable by said Dean upon a contract made by him for certain fee farm and other rents payable by the church of Lichfield and others in the counties of Stafford, Lichfield, Wilts and Notts. Charles Bertie to the Hearthmoney Contractors. The officers of the Works have represented to Treasurer Danby their present want of money to pay poor workmen, and for other necessary services. His Lordship desires you to advance them 1,500l., in further part of their tallies on you, payable in Sept. next, for which his Lordship will allow you such interest and gratuity as shall be fit.
