Die Mercurii, 27 Januarii, 1646. Die Publicæ Humiliationis.

Preachers thanked.

ORDERED, That Sir Anthony Irby do, from this House, give Thanks unto Mr. Arrowsmith, for the great Pains he took in his Sermon, preached on this Day at Margarett's Westminster, before the House of Commons: And that he do desire him to print his Sermon: Wherein he is to have the like Privilege in Printing of it, as others, in the like kind, usually have had.

Ordered, That Mr. Wheeler do, from this House, desire Mr. Lightfoote to preach before the House of Commons, at Margarett's, Westminster, on the next Monthly Fast Day.

Publick Fast.

Ordered, That Wednesday, being the Tenth Day of March next, be set apart for a Day of publick Humiliation, for the late Growth and Spreading of Errors, Heresies and Blasphemies, to be observed in all Places within the Kingdom of England, Dominion of Wales, and Town of Berwick; therein to seek God for his Assistance and Direction for the suppressing and preventing the same.

The Lords Concurrence to be desired herein.

Mr. Francis Bacon, Colonel Leigh, Mr. Tate, Mr. Rous, Mr. Grimston, Mr. Millington, Mr. Wheeler;

This Committee is to prepare something to be published, and read in all Churches and Chapels, on Wednesday the Tenth Day of March next, concerning the Occasion of the setting That Day apart for a Day of publick Humiliation; and to report the same to the House: And the Care hereof is referred to Colonel Leigh.

Ordered, That Colonel Leigh do, from this House, desire Mr. Vines to preach before the House of Commons, on Wednesday the Tenth Day of March next; this House, having resolved to set that Day apart for a Day of publick Humiliation, for the late Growth and Spreading of Errors, Heresies, and Blasphemies, in this Kingdom.

Letter to Scotland.

Mr. Swynfen reports from the Committee Yesterday appointed, the Draught of a Letter, according to the Votes Yesterday passed, to be sent to the Parliament of Scotland, in Answer of theirs of 16° Instant; and of the Desires of the Kingdom of Scotland inclosed.

The Letter was read by Parts; and by Parts, upon the Question, voted: And then the Letter was, upon the Question, passed; and ordered to be sent unto the Lords for their Concurrence.

Resolved, &c. That the Letter shall be directed in the usual Form as other Letters have formerly been directed; viz.

"To the Right Honourable the Lords, the Commissioners of Shires and Boroughs, assembled in the Parliament of Scotland."

Conference desired with Lords.

Resolved, &c. That a Conference be desired with the Lords, by Committees of both Houses, so soon as may stand with their Lordships Conveniency, concerning a Letter from the Parliament of Scotland, and other Papers, communicated by their Lordships at a late Conference.

Sir Robert Pye went to the Lords with this Message.

Sir Robert Pye brings Answer, That the Lords agree to a Conference, as is desired, by Committees of both Houses, presently, in the Painted Chamber.

Mr. Wm. Pierepoint, Sir Wm. Lewis, Sir Phil. Stapilton, Mr. Swinfen, Mr. Lisle, are appointed Managers of this Conference.

Letter to Scotland.

A Message from the Lords, by Dr. Heath and Mr. Hakewill;

The Lords have agreed to the Letter to be sent to the Parliament of Scotland, as it came from this House: They desire that Sir Peter Killegrewe may be speedily dispatched with it; and may be furnished for the Expenses of his Journey.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth agree that Sir Peter Killigrew be speedily dispatched.

Resolved, &c. That this House doth order and require the Committee of the Revenue forthwith to give Order for the present Payment of the Sum of Two hundred Pounds unto Sir Peter Killigrew, to furnish him with Necessaries, and for the Expenses of his Journey; he being dispatched from the Parliament of England to the Parliament of Scotland, with Letters of great Importance, and very great Haste.

Ordered, That Mr. Speaker do send a Duplicate of the Letter, agreed by both Houses to be sent to the Parliament of Scotland, to the Commissioners of Scotland residing here.

Church Government.

Ordered, That on Wednesday next, Mr. Bacon do report the Obstructions in settling the Government of the Church.

Letter to Scotland.

Answer returned by the same Messengers; That this House has considered their Lordships Message; and do agree, That Sir Peter Killigrew be speedily dispatched with the Letter from both Houses to the Parliament of Scotland.

Ordered, That Mr. Speaker do sign the Letter ordered to be sent from both Houses to the Parliament of Scotland.

The Covenant.

Ordered, upon the Question, That those Members of the House that are in Town, and have not yet, in the House, taken the Covenant, do, on Monday next, peremptorily, the first Business, take the same: And that the Serjeant do give Notice thereof unto them in the mean time, according to such List as he shall receive from the Clerk.
