Bridgwater Election.

Sir Job Charlton reports from the Committee of Elections the State of the Case, as to the Election for the Town of Bridgwater, between Sir Francis Rolle and Mr. Palmer: That the Right of Election was in the Majority of the Corporation, consisting of a Mayor, Aldermen, and capital Burgesses, in Number Twenty-four; and that so many Persons were present, and gave Votes in the Election: And there being Twelve Voices for Mr. Palmer, and Eleven for Sir Francis Rolle, the Mayor, as Burgess, gave his Voice for him; whereby the Voices were even: and then as Mayor gave his casting Voice: Upon which the Return was made for Sir Fran. Roll: Which Mr. Palmer complains is undue; for that some of those who took upon them to give their Voices for Sir Fran. Roll, were not elected Burgesses; neither were they in a Capacity to be made Burgesses; being debarred by the Act for regulating Corporations; and Three of them by Practice and Design brought in the very Day of Election, though not qualified according to the Act for Corporations; and being all Persons holding Conventicles in their Houses, and resorting to them, in others; and refusing to conform or resort to the Service of the Church, or receive the Sacrament, as the Act does enjoin; and one of them being, at the time of his being elected Burgess, actually excommunicated, and not absolved till after the Election of the Burgess to serve in Parliament: Which Matter, and Witnesses touching the same, were examined before the Committee: And the next Question which did arise, was, whether, and how far, the Mayor was qualified to give his Voice in the Election, admitting there were no Exception to any other of the Electors: And that the Committee, upon Examination of the whole Matter, had agreed on Two Votes; viz.

That Sir Fran. Roll was not duly elected.

That Mr. Palmer was duly elected.

Which Matter being debated at large in the House;

The Question being put, To agree with the Committee, that Sir Francis Rolle was not duly chosen;

It was resolved in the Affirmative.

The Question being put, To agree with the Committee that Mr. Palmer was duly elected for the Town of Bridgwater;

The House divided:

The Noes went out.

Tellers,

Sir John Fitz Williams, for the Yeas, 167.
Mr. Morris,
