Major Norton petitions the County Committee of York for a lease of his estate in St. Nicholas, near Richmond, from Lady Day 1645, and abatement of his assessments, which are more than its rents amount to. It lies waste, yet he has been compelled to give billet for it to the amount of 84l. The rest of his estate lies in the Scots' quarters. Noted that the County Committee are to grant him a year's lease of 4/5 at 150l. a year, and his assessments are to be abated. 187 182
4 March 1646. Major Norton petitions the Committee for Compounding for leave to compound. Was drawn to join the Earl of Newcastle's party, and received moneys for them, but was never in arms. Has been sequestered 2 years, and he and his wife and children utterly ruined. Begs also that his son Edmund, who has been peaceably at home 2 years, may compound. 187 179
L.C.C. 154 103 4 March 1646. Father and son beg to compound for delinquency. The father contributed to the King's forces and proportioned the rates on his neighbours. The son bore arms for the King; both submitted about June 1644. 187 178
