23 July 1651. George Dawson petitions. The late Committee for Advance of Money, whom he had served 4 years, appointed him treasurer in Nov. 1649, and he has demeaned himself faithfully, but he is now ordered to give in a bond in 5,000l. for true accounts. He has accounted for the past with the auditor, and accounts with him weekly, and what he receives he pays out at once, having seldom above 200l. or 300l., the receipts being so small. Such a bond was never given before, the Committee for Advance of Money having waived it, and the sum being so large, it will be hard to find sureties, begs that his own bond may be taken, having done nothing to lessen confidence in him. 110 5
23 July. Order that within 14 days he give security in 3,000l. 110 6
7 Nov. 1651. Order that, as Treasurer Dawson is sick, Aud. Sherwin open the chest where he keeps his cash, take notes of it, and of the books, evidences, and papers therein, &c., and report, and that he keep the keys till further order. 17 75
11 Nov. Geo. Dawson to the Committee for Advance of Money. On some complained of persons, who had money designed them out of the 10,000l. appointed for the Ordnance Office, you sent for the keys of my cash, which I gave up, though it was a great trouble to me, being ill. Lest it be conceived that there was more money than was found, I send you an account, balanced up to the day, and last week it was balanced with the auditor. I have been faithful, though I may have been misrepresented. Whenever I got together 300l. or 400l., I requested [Thos.] Harrison, the receiver, to send for it, and there is very little in hand except the store I kept for the weekly pensions. I hope soon to be well enongh to wait on you, and meantime I have appointed a deputy. With the accounts alluded to, viz., receipts from 3 May 1650 to 11 Nov. 1651, 33,415 9s. 3d.; balance in hand, 236l. 14s. 4d., of which 100l. has been borrowed by Mr. Moyer and Squibb, and distributed to several poor people, for which Dawson begs a discharge. 110 7, 8
17 Dec. 1651. Order that Dawson bring in his security on Friday 17 123
30 June 1652. Order that unless Dawson perfects his accounts with the auditor in 10 days, and deliver over the cash to [Mich.] Herring and [Rich.] Waring, who are to be the treasurers of the Committee for Advance of Money, but to keep distinct accounts of the money received and paid, by them as treasurers to the said Committee. 12 40
13 July 1652. Order that unless Dawson perfect his accounts in 3 days after notice, he be brought up in custody by the serjeantat-arms. 12 48
21 July. Order that as he has neither perfected and delivered his accounts to the Goldsmiths' Hall treasurers, Herring and Waring, nor appeared as ordered, his chests be sealed up, and he not permitted access to them till further order. 12 79
24 Sept. 1652. Order that he pay over to Waring and Herring the money he has in hand. 12 151
