THE NAMES IN OUR TEXT.
The following numbers indicate the pages of our text which contain one or more references to the individual to whose name they are appended.

By consulting the pages indicated an outline may be obtained of the lives of some of the parishioners of St. Mary's before the Reformation. We may find the position of their homes, the amount of rent paid, the debts owing, the profession or trade of the head of the house, the Christian names of the different members of the family, the date and place of their burial, and many other details of a medieval parishioner's life.

In most cases to follow the various incidents of the life of a parishioner and assign them to the right individual presents little difficulty. When, however, the Christian name is not given, or both Christian and surname are common to more than one person, or the distinctive trade is not mentioned, the difficulty has at times proved too great to permit the page number to be placed to unquestionably the right individual. In such cases the number has been appended to the parishioner to whom it seems the most likely to belong. For instance, about the end of the fifteenth century there were in St. Mary's parish three men of the name of Paris, of whom two enjoyed the name of William. One Paris was a joiner, another a labourer, and another an almsman receiving relief each Sunday. It is perhaps impossible to say definitely to whom the many little jobs of sweeping the church, watching the Easter Sepulchre, etc., etc., should be assigned. Circumstances seem to point to the employment of the almsman, and to him the uncertain page numbers have been appended, possibly erroneously. He is definitely associated with another almsman in employment for the church at p. 197.

Dawson's child, too, may be the little one of John or Robert Dawson, or of neither. Ysabell Cutler and Elizabeth Cutler are probably the same, though entered here separately. Thomas Mondens also is probably Thomas Mondaye, but the evidence is hardly suffi cient to justify placing the numbers of both after one name. When the same name occurs after the death of a similarly-named parishioner it is not unreasonable to suppose that the son takes the father's place, but the question of relationship, when not specified, is often very obscure.

The spelling of the names, though sometimes widely differing in the case of the same individual, has not proved a serious difficulty. Axe may appear as Ex, John Law as John Lowne, Vstum as Huscam, Austhorpe as Alltrope, and so on.

With such difficulties the following pages cannot be regarded as in any way a very satisfactory piece of work. A certain number of mistakes cannot but be present. Still, this index has its value. Generally speaking, it is substantially accurate, and in every case it furnishes the whole material to at once establish its accuracy or error, or the impossibility of establishing either.

Two curious names occur, Drynkmylk and William Naghty Pakke. Two other names may be those of Hebrew families, Jacob and Baltazar the clerk. Some names seem curiously appropriate, Antony Elderton the churchwarden, William Remyngton the alderman, Gymbold the joiner, Alice Smale the washerwoman, etc., etc.

It is believed that every reference to each name has been given, as well as those to individuals mentioned only by their profession or trade. The last reference after a name is frequently that of the burial.
