First occ. as can. 7 Nov. 1243 (B.M., Harley MS. 6956 fo. 24v, from an original deed formerly in St. Paul's 'in thecis') and 1243/4 (WD 1 fo. 49b), (fn. 12) but almost certainly to be identified with John son of Ralph, who occ. as can. [July 1236 × Sept. 1241] (cart. of Hospitallers: B.M. Cotton Nero E. vi fo. 7r), (fn. 13) and who occ. before 1239 as John son of Ralph of Bulmer, not called can. (Gibbs no. 300). Occ. frequently as can. until 1260, but prob. transf. to preb. of Caddington Minor after June 1252.
