PREBEND

Church of Nassington (Northants) gr. 'in prebendam' by king Henry I 1107 × 16, ? 1113 (Regesta II no. 1032 = R.A.L. I no. 41); conf. as preb. by pope 6 Feb. 1146 (R.A.L. I no. 252 p. 199) and 5 June 1163 (ibid. no. 255 p. 207). Vicarage of mother church and chapels (not named) ordained 24 March 1277 (Rot. Gravesend p. 131). Pres. by preb. 1284 (Reg. Sutton II 41). Church of Wood Newton (Northants): church included in Henry I's gr., ? 1113 (cited above); evidently a chapel of Nassington by time of ordination of vicarage 1277 (cited above).

Church of Tansor (Northants): church included in Henry I's gr., ? 1113 (cited above), and also gr. to this preb. by Simon earl of Northampton mid 1150s (R.A.L. II no. 310, see app. 15); preb. was rector but did not have advowson (see E.Y.C. V 87-8; V.C.H. Northants II 596); preb. had annual payment of 2½ marks from either moiety in 1226 and 1233 (Rot. Welles II 122-3, 165, 216), and 1236 (Rot. Grosseteste pp. 164-5). See also Dij/88/1/1-10.

Church of Southwick (Northants): church included in Henry I's gr. ? 1113 (cited above), but also gr. to Huntingdon priory, conf. by pope 15 Aug. 1147 (Mon. Ang. VI(1) 80(v)); preb. had 10s. p.a. from cans. of Huntingdon in name of perpetual benefice in 1223 (Rot. Welles II 112), and presum. a pension in 1291 (Taxatio p. 39b).

Ranulph of Nassington

Occ. as this preb. 1151 × 59, prob. mid 1150s (R.A.L. II no. 310, see app. 15), and before Feb. 1169 (R.A.L. II no. 327). (fn. 1) Prob. to be identified with M. Ranulph p[resbyter], who occ. early 1150s (ibid. no. 495, see app. 11); and with Ranulph can. and presbyter who occ. 30 May 1163 (R.A.L. IX no. 2474); and with Randulph can. and sacerdos who occ. c. 1163 (ibid. IV no. 1247, see app. 22). Perhaps to be identified with Randulph, unident. preb., who was commem. 24 Dec. (below p. 136).

William of Avallon (fn. 2)

Prob. appd. by his uncle, bp. Hugh of Avallon (1186-1200) (cf. C.Ch.R. II 106; list 1). First occ. as can. before 19 Sept. 1200 (B. L., Add. Ch. 33442, see app. 46), but perhaps already can. when occ. Sept. 1189 × c. 1193 (R.A.L. II no. 338(9), see app. 37; cf. R.A.L. VI no. 1893, which prob. belongs to 1198 × 1205, cf. charters discussed in app. 47). First occ. as this preb. Sept. 1211 (C.R.R. VI 141). Last occ. (this preb.) 2 Apr. 1236 (R.A.L. II no. 312; cf. Rot. Grosseteste pp. 163, 391, of 1 Apr.). Donor of books to the cathedral (Woolley, Cat. MSS. p. ix).

M. Robert of Cadney

First occ. as can. 25 May 1236 (Rot. Grosseteste p. 389). Also bp.'s official, Sept. 1236 (Cart. Bushmead no. 14). Precentor, from between 12 Apr. and 22 Sept. 1244; d. between 17 May 1254 and 3 Nov. 1258, perhaps in Nov. 1257 or earlier (list 3). Occ. as this preb. as precentor (Dij/84/1/8).

Richard of Sutton (fn. 3)

Successor of M. Robert of Cadney in this preb. (Dij/88/1/10). First occ. as can. 24 May 1257 (C.P.R. 1247-58 p. 556; cf. Dij/67/3/15, of 1257/8). Occ. as this preb. n.d., and Michaelmas term 1266 (Dij/84/1/11-12). Also preb. of Southwell, from 14 Sept. 1241 (Reg. Giffard p. 84). D. by 6 Aug. 1268 (ibid. p. 87; cf. execution of his will, n.d., L.A.O., MS. Cragg 3/25). Nephew of bp. Oliver of Sutton (1280-99) (Rufford Chs. I pp. cxiii-xiv; cf. Reg. Sutton III pp. xvii-xviii; list 1).

M. Henry of Chichester

Chanc. some time after 29 Sept. 1264 to some time before 12 June 1275 (list 4). Successor of Richard of Sutton in this preb. (Dij/88/1/10). Presum. transf. from preb. S. Scarle by 12 Aug. 1268 (list 58). Occ. as this preb. as chanc., n.d. (Dij/84/1/7, 9-10), and Apr. 1270 (Dij/88/1/10).

M. John Le Romeyn (the younger)

Transf. from preb. N. Kelsey on transferring from chancellorship to precentorship, between 25 June and 29 Sept. 1278 (Reg. Hon. IV no. 279 = C.P.L. I 484; lists 4, 3, 55). Occ. as this preb. 7 July and 27 Nov. 1283 (Registres de Martin IV, ed. F. Olivier-Martin (Bibliothèque des écoles Françaises d'Athènes et de Rome, 2nd ser., xvi) nos. 355, 391 = C.P.L. I 468-9), and before 19 July 1284 (Reg. Sutton II 41). Abp. of York, el. 29 Oct. 1285, but still precentor and this preb. 5 Feb. 1286 (Reg. Hon. IV no. 279 = C.P.L. I 484), cons. 10 Feb., temps. 16 Apr.

This preb. vacant May 1286 (Reg. Romeyn II 137), and presum. still vacant c. 15 March 1289 (C.C.R. 1288-96 p. 37). Business concerning the preb. sent to Rome 11 Sept. 1290 (Reg. Sutton III 43, 121).

M. John de Lacy (fn. 4)

First occ. as can. (unident. preb.) 8 Feb. 1280 (Reg. Pecham I 38-9). First occ. as this preb. 5 Nov. 1289 (C.P.R. 1281-92 p. 329; cf. Dij/55/2/14). Evidently some dispute over his possession (see Reg. Sutton III 43, 121; Dij/84/1/2, 4, 6), and received royal gr. of this preb., s.v., 21 Nov. 1299 (C.R.P. 1292-1301 p. 479). Also preb. of Wells; chanc. of Chichester. Transf. to preb. Welton Beckhall before his d., which had occurred by 11 Nov. 1301 (list 66).

John de Drokensford (fn. 5)

Royal gr. of this preb., s.v., presum. before 18 March 1300 (Reg. II fo. 279r-v), but ineffective. Preb. vacant in year Sept. 1304 - Sept. 1305 (Edwards, Sec. Caths. p. 328). Another royal gr. of this preb. 8 Oct. 1305 (C.P.R. 1301-7 p. 380). Adm. 10 Nov. 1305 (Reg. II fo. 279r-v), instal. 12 Nov. (A/2/21 fo. 2v-3r).
