PREBEND

Preb., consisting of Bedminster, with chapels of [St Mary] Redcliffe, [Abbots] Leigh (all Somt.) and Alveston (Glos.), conf. by Henry II by 19 Oct. 1157 (Saltman, Theobald no. 241; RSO I 203). Prob. to be identified with churches at Bristol, previously held by Guy of Bristol, conf. by Henry I 1107 x 35 (RSO I 202, cal. Regesta II no. 1972).

Preb. prob. added to Psalter list after c. 1150. Preb. mentioned in agreements with Bath priory, concerning chapel of Alveston, 1151 x c. 1164 (RSO I 244-5), and with St Augustine's, Bristol, concerning estates in Bristol, c. 1175 (ibid. p. 269), and [Abbots] Leigh, May x Nov. 1193 (ibid. p. 264); further dispute with St Augustine's, 1227 (Pat. R. 1225-32 p. 157). See also Sar. Chs. pp. 172-3, 286-8.

Preb. named as Bedminster in all 12th-cent. documents, but called 'Radeclive' 1220s (C. 462, pd. Sar. Chs. p. 208), 'Ratecliv' Oct. 1226 x Feb. 1227 (RSO II 73), 'Radeclive' 1284 (app. 2, and cf. C. 511). But not two prebs., as thought by Jones, Fasti p. 360.

First preb., held the churches before 19 Oct. 1157 (Saltman, Theobald no. 241). Occ. as can. on one other occasion, 1151 x c. 1164 (RSO I 245, for date see Henry precentor, list 3).

Walter de Dunstanville

Occ. this preb. May x Nov. 1193 (RSO I 264). Not otherwise known. Unlikely to be identified with preb. of London in mid-12th cent. (1 Fasti I 83).

Gilbert de Lacy

First occ. as can. 7 Jan. 1213/14 (Nova Const.) and before Jan. 1215 (Sar. Chs. p. 75). Made presentation of a gift by Richard or Roger de Clifford, 1219 (RSO II 10, 137 (cf. Ceremonies p. 178)). Occ. this preb. Oct. 1226 x Feb. 1227 (app. 1) and as parson of Bedminster, n.d. (RSO MS p. 72, 'G. de Lacy', pd. as 'E. de Lacy' in RSO I 270). Occ. as can. several times. Prob. also treas. of Lincoln, occ. 1215-1226 (1 Fasti III 19). Fined for non-residence Feb. 1227 (RSO II 76). Last occ., still preb., 6 June 1227 (Pat. R. 1225-32 p. 157). D. by 20 Dec. 1227 (RSO II 82-3).

Robert de Lexington (fn. 1)

Royal justice 1218-44 (Turner, Judiciary pp. 194, 218-19, 257, 301). Coll. by bp. to preb. previously held by Gilbert de Lacy, 28 Dec. 1227 (RSO II 81, 94-6), but preb. claimed by M. John Romeyn, subdean of York, on strength of papal prov. of next vacant preb. 8 Aug. 1227 (ibid. pp. 82-3). Robert's coll. declared void by Romeyn 21 Apr. 1228 (RSO II 83), but Robert occ. as can. 9 Sept. 1228 (RSO II 108, initial wrongly extended as 'Richard', cf. RSO MS reads 'R.'), and on several subsequent occasions. Romeyn claimed preb. [Ruscombe] before 22 Aug. 1228 (list 51). Robert disp. for plurality 26 Feb. 1238 (Reg. Greg. IX no. 4099, cal. CPL I 168). Transf. to preb. Charminster, occ. before 1242 (list 26).

M. Henry Tessun (fn. 2)

Can. from before 1220, preb. Durnford in 1226 (list 29). Occ. as preb. Bedminster and Redclyffe 6 Oct. 1243 (Sar. Chs. pp. 286-8). Founded chantry at St Mary Redcliffe (HMC Wells I 1-2). Also successively archdcn. of Bath by 1243; precentor of Wells by 1248. Still alive 10 Aug. 1251 (ibid. p. 138). D. by 10 Jan. 1255 (ibid. pp. 1-2). Commem. 13 Aug. (ibid. p. 1). Brother of M. Nicholas Tessun, preb. Blewbury (list 22).

Martin de Littlebury

Can. by 1250, preb. Stratton by 1255 (list 56). Pres. to this preb. by bp.; mandate to induct issued by bp.-el. of Bath and Wells 19 Oct. 1264 (Reg. Walter Giffard, Bishop of Bath and Wells, ed. T. M. Peter de Gorumville
