Faringdon (Berks.) a royal manor 1086, of which bp. Osmund held 1 hide with the church (DB I 57d). Church given to cans. by bp. Osmund 1091 (carta), conf. by Henry II 1158 (RSO I 205).

Preb. prob. added to Psalter list after c. 1150. Certainly in existence by 1220 (Sar. Chs. pp. 96-8; cf. ibid. pp. 107-9; also RSO II 31, of c. 1226). Establishment of four priests in church of Faringdon and chapel of Coxwell 1227 (Sar. Chs. pp. 187-9; cf. ibid. pp. 243-4).

Also occ. as can. before 1217 (IV/C.3/Chardstock/4) and twice before 23 Aug. 1220 (RSO II 34; IV/E.5/Prebend of Chardstock/1). (fn. 1) D. as this preb. before 3 Oct. 1227 (Sar. Chs. p. 188, called 'Teyle', sic in MSS).

Oct. 1226 x Feb. 1227 (app. 1, cf. RSO II 31), 3 Oct. 1227 (Sar. Chs. pp. 187-9), and 1237/8 (ibid. p. 243). Bp.'s official, occ. 17 Jan. 1222 ('16 kal. Feb.', IV/C.4/29, pd. Sar. Chs. p. 121 and Reg. Malmes. I 401). Archdcn. of Berks. by 25 Apr. 1224, last occ. 17 Feb. 1236; dean of Wells in 1237, last occ. 19 Sept. 1237, had been succeeded by 28 Jan. 1238 (list 8).

Ancher Pantaléon of Troyes

Nephew of pope Urban IV, cardinal-pr. of S. Praxedis 1262-86 (Eubel I 8; cf. CPR 1258-66 pp. 221, 252). Papal prov. of next vac. preb. in Salisbury before c. 1 March 1264 (Reg. Urbain IV no. 1383, cal. CPL I 411). Also preb. of York (York Minster Fasti II 59, 79). Occ. this preb. May-June 1284 (app. 2). D. 1 Nov. 1286 (Eubel I 8; cf. Reg. John Le Romeyn, ed. W. Brown (Surtees Soc. cxxiii, cxxviii, 1913-16) I 361).

Next identified preb. is M. John Walwayne, who had royal coll. to this preb. 8 July 1315 (see 2 Fasti III 49).
