Son of Hugh du Puiset, bp. of Durham (1153-95); chanc. of king of France by Aug. 1179 (Gesta Henrici II, ed. W. Stubbs (RS xlix, 1867) I 241). Said in a case of 1228 to have held this preb. temp. Walter of Coutances, bp. of Lincoln, i.e. July 1183 × March 1185 (CRR XIII no. 929, cal. EEA I no. 306). Last occ. as chanc. of king of France 21 Apr. × 31 Oct. 1185 (Recueil des Actes de Philippe Auguste, ed. M. H.-F. Delaborde et al. (Paris, 1916-79), I nos. 139-40, 143-4), and chancellery vacant before 31 Oct. 1185 (ibid. nos. 146-7). Said in 1189 to be dead (see L. Perrichet, La Grande Chancellerie de France (Paris, 1912) p. 506).

Occ. this preb. (as 'R.') before 1219 (Rot. Welles I 88). Res. this preb., still bp.'s chapl., before 1219 (ibid. p. 120). Possibly to be identified with M. Richard persona, unident. preb. (list 66).

William de Linden'

Pres. to this preb. in succession to Richard the chaplain, before 1219 (Rot. Welles I 120). Predecessor in this preb. of William of Ingoldsby (Sar. Chs. p. 118).

William of Ingoldsby (fn. 2)

First occ. as can. and this preb. 15 Aug. 1222 (Sar. Chs. p. 122), successor of William de Linden' (ibid. p. 118). Occ. this preb. several times, e.g. 23 Sept. 1223 (Rot. Welles III 125), Oct. 1226 × Feb. 1227 (app. 1). Excused 15 Aug. 1226 (RSO II 61); fined for non-residence Feb. 1227 (ibid. p. 76); absent 9 Sept. 1228 (ibid. p. 104). Last occ. this preb. 20 Dec. 1230 × 19 Dec. 1231 (Rot. Welles III 190). Had been succeeded before 19 Dec. 1232 (ibid. p. 201). Possibly to be identified with M. William of Lincoln, who occ. as can. 3 Oct. 1227 (Sar. Chs. p. 189), and was absent, 'in borealibus partibus' 9 Sept. 1228 (RSO II 104), but William of Ingoldsby also occ., as excused, in this document. For two men called William of Lincoln in this period, see 1 Fasti III 34.

M. Benedict (fn. 3)

Papal chapl., this preb. assigned to him 20 Dec. 1231 × 19 Dec. 1232, presum. on papal prov. (Rot. Welles III 201). Occ. this preb. 17 June 1236 × 16 June 1237, 17 Nov. 1236, and 17 June 1238 × 16 June 1239 (Rot. Grosseteste pp. 6, 14, 30). Also papal chamberlain, preb. of London (1 Fasti I 78). Prob. still alive 29 Nov. 1240 (Rot. Grosseteste p. 56). D. by 20 May 1242 (CPR 1232-47 p. 298).

M. Marinus of Eboli (fn. 4)

Papal vice-chanc., first occ. as can. and preb. Grantham, presum. Borealis, 18 Aug. 1246, evidently by papal prov. (cal. Reg. Innoc. IV no. 2169 and CPL I 228). Had claim to treasurership, settled 18 Aug. 1246 (ibid.; see list 5). This preb. called 'Graham maryn', c. 1284 (C. 511). Continued to hold this preb. as bp.-el. of Capua (prov. 13 Jan. 1252; new prov. 27 May 1266, Eubel I 164), occ. 20 Dec. 1260 (Rot. Gravesend p. 5). D. as this preb. by 21 Dec. 1271 (ibid. p. 50).

M. Stephen de Gurunvile or Goronvile

Can. of Hereford; precentor of Salisbury and preb. Teinton Regis, instal. 18 Apr. 1270 (lists 3, 57). Occ. as preb. Grantham 'Australis' 21 Dec. 1271, making pres. to Denton, which pertained to this preb. (Rot. Gravesend p. 50). Still alive 28 Jan. 1272 (list 3). D. as this preb. by 30 Aug. 1272 (Rot. Gravesend p. 52).

M. John de Burton

Subdean and unident. preb. (lists 11, 65). Adm. to this preb. as precentor, 30 Aug. 1272, in succession to M. Stephen de Gurunvile (Rot. Gravesend p. 52). Precentor to d. (list 3).
