Preb. prob. in existence by c. 1150 (Psalter list). Preb. called 'Rotescumbe' and 'Rotescamp' in 13th century. Deeds concerning preb. in RSO I 323-4 and Sar. Chs. pp. 72-3.

Succentor by Apr. or May 1193, to some time between 1197 and 1215 (list 12). Occ. this preb. as succentor, 1197 × 1215 (Sar. Chs. p. 72).

M. Luke [of Winchester]

First occ. as can. 26 Apr. 1220 (cart. Wherwell fos. 123v-124r). (fn. 1) Occ. this preb. shortly before 24 Nov. 1223 (RSO I 323-4). Presum. to be identified with M. Luke of Winchester, who occ. as preb. Coombe in 1226 (list 28); and was later archdcn. of Surrey, preb. of London, and preb. Hurstbourne (list 38).

M. Stephen [of Ecton] (fn. 2)

First occ. as can. and this preb., as M. Stephen, Oct. 1226 × Feb. 1227 (app. 1). Presum. to be identified with M. Stephen de Eketon, can., fined for non-residence Feb. 1227 (RSO II 77) and also occ. 9 Sept. 1228 (ibid. p. 108). Royal clk., occ. [late Aug. 1225] (Diplom. Docs. I nos. 182-3); papal disp. to hold addit. benefice 20 Jan. 1226 (Reg. Hon. III no. 5790, wrongly dated in CPL I 105). Occ. as can. 9 Sept. 1228 (RSO II 108). Res. preb. in Salisbury to take religious habit before 10 Dec. 1228 (Pat. R. 1225-32 p. 231, also RSO II 96; cf. Ann. Dunstable p. 111).

Royal gr. of preb. in succession to M. Stephen of Ecton, presum. this preb., 10 Dec. 1228 (Pat. R. 1225-32 p. 231, also RSO II 96), but claimed before 22 Aug. 1228 by M. John Romeyn, subdean of York, on strength of papal reservation of next vacant preb. (RSO II 95-6, cf. ibid. pp. 82-3 and above, list 16; and see below, list 66). After some delay and difficulty with Romeyn, Brito's proxy instal. 1 March 1229 (ibid. pp. 96-100). Occ. as can. once only, absent, 19 Oct. 1233 (Sar. Chs. p. 230).
