First reference to this preb., called 'Hurst', 1291 (Taxatio p. 137b). In 1535 consisted of farm in 'Bishopshurst' and lands in Sidlesham (W. Suss.) (Valuation 1535 p. 165). 'Bishopshurst', now marked by Bishop's Place in Albourne parish, was part of the bp.'s manor of Streatham (W. Suss.; see PN Suss. I 215; not in DB).
