Walter son of Peter

Royal collation to preb. formerly held by Geoffrey Aguillun, sede vacante, 29 Nov. 1213 (Rot. Litt. Pat. p. 106a; list 41). Occ. as canon three times: 29 Oct. 1232; by proxy 23 July 1247 and 19 Apr. 1251 (Walcott, Statutes pp. 160, 185, 213).

Walter of St Giles

Occ. as W- de Sancto Egidio canon by proxy 23 July 1247 (Walcott, Statutes p. 185). Occ. with full name, as having died before 2 Aug. 1256 (Chart. Chichester nos. 582-3). Already dead when provision made for his anniversary, ibid. no. 580. Almost certainly to be identified with 'W. de Sancto Edwardo' (for 'Egidio'), who occ. as canon once only, 31 Jan. 1244 (ibid. no. 211, from Liber B fos. 66v-67r and Liber E fo. 64v (old 192v), omitted in Liber Y fo. 102r; for another corruption in this text, see above, Nicholas de Neville).

Warin

Occ. as canon, holding land in the suburb of Chichester, 1220-1 (Curia Regis Rolls VIII 357-8, IX 56, X 120), and Jan. 1223, when he is called Warin of Firle (ibid. XI no. 380). Presum. therefore to be identified with Warin who was admitted to perpetual vicarage of Firle, presented by dean and chapter, March 1198 × March 1204 (Acta nos. 99-100), and not to be identified with Warin, preb. Heathfield (list 20).

M. William

Occ. as canon once only, 1154 × 61, prob. 1154 × 55 (Acta no. 49).

William de Alta Villa

Occ. as canon twice only: 19 Oct. 1272 × 5 Apr. 1279 and c. 1275 (Chart. Chichester nos. 450, 663). Perhaps to be identified with M. William de Alta Villa, rector of St Peter's, Northampton, March-Apr. 1258 (Reg. Alex. IV no. 2515, cal. CPL I 356).

William the chaplain

Occ. as canon twice only: 1192/3 and 1197/8 (Acta nos. 84, 101). Note, however, that two individuals called William the chapl., neither called canon, attest two chs. of 24 Jan. 1191 × 1197 (ibid. nos. 116, 121).

William of Chichester

Occ. as canon once only, 6 Oct. 1174 × c. 26 Apr. 1180 (Chart. Chichester no. 309). Perhaps to be identified with man of same name, who occ. as canon of Salisbury on four occasions between c. 1163 and 1193 (1 Fasti IV 136). Prob. not to be identified with canon of Exeter of same name, who died 14 March 1174/5 (ibid., citing Exeter, Dean & Chapter MS 3518 fo. 7v).

William de Cornhill

Occ. as advocate of chapter of Chichester Trinity term 1214 (Curia Regis Rolls VII 145). Bp.-el. of Coventry, his preb. of Chichester collated to M. Robert of Gloucester (list 41) 9 July 1214 (Rot. Litt. Pat. pp. 117b-118a), and again 19 Oct. (Rot. Litt. Claus. I 173b), and to Odo de Ledred (above) 27 Nov. (Rot. Litt. Pat. p. 124b). Royal clerk, first occ. 4 Apr. 1205 (ibid. p. 52a); archdcn. of Huntingdon from June 1207 (1 Fasti III 28); bp. of Coventry, temps. 20 Oct. 1214, cons. 25 Jan. 1215.

William de Fordes

Occ. as canon twice only: 1 Aug. 1284 (Reg. Pontissara II 413) and c. 1285 (Chart. Chichester no. 1022). Prob. to be identified with M. William de la Forde who occ. in suit concerning lands in Horsham and other places in W. Suss., 8 July 1285 (Suss. Fines II no. 977).

M. William of Keynsham (fn. 51)

Occ. as canon on six occasions between 1197 and c. 17 March 1204: with full name in Acta nos. 71, 113, 129, and as M. William ibid. nos. 75, 88, 137. No further appearance as canon of Chichester until 26 May 1220 (Chart. Sele no. 41), after which he occ. several times, last Oct. 1237 (Chart. Chichester no. 247). Arrangement for his anniversary ibid. no. 548. If these two periods of activity at Chichester belong to the same individual, the gap between them may be explained if he is also to be identified with William de Keinesham, canon of Wells, who occ. at Lincoln several times between 23 Sept. 1217 (Liber Antiquus de Ordinationibus... Hugonis Wells, ed. A. Gibbons (Lincoln, 1888) p. 81 etc.) and 1219 (Rotuli Hugonis de Welles, ed. W. P. W. Phillimore et al. (CYS i, iii, iv, 1912- 14) I 157-8); and at Wells in the late 1220s or early 1230s (HMC Calendar of the MSS of the Dean and Chapter of Wells I (1907) 29).

William of Lagness

Occ. as canon once only, cited for non-attendance at abp.'s visitation, 22 May 1283 (Reg. Pecham II 199).

M. William de Marchia (fn. 52)

Occ. as canon, being disp. for plurality at king's request, 20 March 1291 (Reg. Nic. IV no. 4606, cal. CPL I 530-1). No other occ. as canon. Royal clerk; controller of wardrobe 1283-90; treas. of Exchequer 1290-5 (Tout, Chapters II 16-17, VI 28, 19). Also dean of St Martin le Grand, London; preb. of Salisbury (1 Fasti IV 84); canon of Wells. Bp. of Bath and Wells, el. 28 Jan. 1293, temps. 19 March, cons. 17 May.

William Psalter (alias Sautir)

Occ. as canon c. 1190 × 28 July 1213 (Chart. Chichester no. 1064) and 26 May 1220 (Chart. Sele no. 41). Mentioned as having died, his house granted by dean and chapter to John the glazier, March 1239/40 (Chart. Chichester no. 404; cf. no. 554).

William of Selsey

Occ. as canon five times: 12 Sept. 1247 × 3 Apr. 1253 (Chart. Chichester no. 226); mid 1250s (Liber Y fo. 79r, wrongly given as Walter of Selsey in Chart. Chichester no. 66); (fn. 53) 4 Nov. 1256 (Chart. Chichester no. 108); c. 1275 (ibid. no. 663); and 18 June 1276 (CPR 1272-81 p. 148). Chapl., beneficiary and executor of St Richard's will (d. 3 Apr. 1253), receiving a Bible and some quaterns in 'hairy' binding (St Richard pp. 68, 69, 'quaternos meos sub coopertorio piloso').
