Chichester no. 284). Mayr-Harting understands 'filius decani' to mean that he was son of John 'de Greenford', dean by mid Feb. 1157, until el. bp. by 1 May 1173, cons. 6 Oct. 1174 (lists 2, 1) (see Acta index). But Simon's career as canon overlaps the terms of office of two deans: Seffrid II, dean by prob. Dec. 1178 until became bp., cons. 16 Nov. 1180 (lists 2, 1), and M. Matthew of Chichester, dean by 15 Nov. 1181 to mid 1190s (list 2). Perhaps Simon was son of a local dean rather than a dean of the cathedral. He is almost certainly to be identified with Simon, not called son of the dean, who occ. as canon three times: 15 Jan. 1179/80 (Acta no. 60), before c. 26 Apr. 1180, perhaps c. Prob. not to be identified with canon of Exeter of same name, who died 14 March 1174/5 (ibid., citing Exeter, Dean & Chapter MS 3518 fo. 7v).

Occ. as advocate of chapter of Chichester Trinity term 1214 (Curia Regis Rolls VII 145). Bp.-el. of Coventry, his preb. of Chichester collated to M. Robert of Gloucester (list 41) 9 July 1214 (Rot. Litt. Pat. pp. 117b-118a), and again 19 Oct. (Rot. Litt. Claus. I 173b), and to Odo de Ledred (above) 27 Nov. (Rot. Litt. Pat. p. 124b). William de Fordes

Occ. as canon twice only: 1 Aug. 1284 (Reg. Pontissara II 413) and c. 1285 (Chart. Chichester no. 1022). Prob. to be identified with M. William de la Forde who occ. in suit concerning lands in Horsham and other places in W. Suss., 8 July 1285 (Suss. Fines II no. 977).

M. William of Keynsham (fn. 51)

Occ. as canon on six occasions between 1197 and c. 17 March 1204: with full name in Acta nos. 71, 113, 129, and as M. William ibid. nos. 75, 88, 137. No further appearance as canon of Chichester until 26 May 1220 (Chart. Sele no. 41), after which he occ. several times, last Oct. 1237 (Chart. Chichester no. 247). Arrangement for his anniversary ibid. no. 548. If these two periods of activity at Chichester belong to the same individual, the gap between them may be explained if he is also to be identified with William de Keinesham, canon of Wells, who occ. at Lincoln several times between 23 Sept. 1217 (Liber Antiquus de Ordinationibus... Hugonis Wells, ed. A. Gibbons (Lincoln, 1888) p. 81 etc.) and 1219 (Rotuli Hugonis de Welles, ed. W. P. W. Phillimore et al. (CYS i, iii, iv, 1912- 14) I 157-8); and at Wells in the late 1220s or early 1230s (HMC Calendar of the MSS of the Dean and Chapter of Wells I (1907) 29).

Occ. as canon c. 1190 × 28 July 1213 (Chart. Chichester no. 1064) and 26 May 1220 (Chart. Sele no. 41). Mentioned as having died, his house granted by dean and chapter to John the glazier, March 1239/40 (Chart. Chichester no. 404; cf. no. 554).
