Succentory

Succentor of the cans. established as an office in perpetuity 13 Nov. 1230, with church of Tunstall (E.R.) annexed (Reg. Gray pp. 52-3). Succentor to deputise for prec. in his absence (ibid.).

Valuation

1291 £13 6s. 8d. (Taxatio pp. 305b, 322a).

There was also a succentor of the vicars (Chs. Vicars Choral p. xviii; see K. Edwards, English Secular Cathedrals (2nd edn.: Manchester, 1967) pp. 170-1).

Gray p. 258; Cart. Whitby I nos. 306-7). Last occ., as W. succentor, 15 Apr. 1249 (Reg. Gray p. 260; cf. pp. 289-90, of 13 Nov. 1248). Archdcn. of York by 21 Sept. 1249 (list 9).

Peter of Figheldean (fn. 77)

Can. of Ripon by 29 Jan. 1242; also can. of Beverley by 1248 (list 50). Occ. as P. succentor 20 Aug. 1253 (Cart. Treas. York no. 11). Occ. as Peter succentor 16 March 1254 (Reg. Gray p. 272 n. = Chs. Vicars Choral no. 143), 1 Oct. 1255 (Reg. Giffard p. 251), and 6 Oct. 1255 when dean and chapter issued a bond in his favour in recognition of his loan to the dean of 200m. (HCY III 174-5). Occ. as Peter de Fikolden succentor 1252 × 55 (Reg. Gray p. 291).

Roger Pepin

Occ. as succentor once, 4 Dec. 1264 (CPR 1258-66 p. 391). Not to be confused with M. Roger Pepin, subdean (list 6), nor with M. Roger Pepin vicar of Leeds who was ord. pr. 1274 (Reg. Giffard p. 197).

M. Thomas of Monkgate

Occ. as succentor, prob. of cans., 9 Feb. 1267, when appd. abp.'s official and deputy archdcn. of Richmond (Reg. Giffard pp. 178, 179). Also occ. as succentor 29 Dec. 1270 (ibid. p. 46) and 1264 × 21 June 1279 (Chs. Vicars Choral no. 125); and occ. without title, 1272 × 73 and c. 1280 (ibid. nos. 144, 466). Sacrist of Beverley by 13 July 1274, still 1290, d. or res. by 12 Feb. 1295 (Beverley Fasti p. 114).

Roger de Mar

Rector of Whixley (W.R.), occ. as abp.'s proctor 27 Dec. 1297 and 8 March 1298 (CPL I 574, 575 = Reg. Bon. VIII nos. 2191, 2237-8, 2434). Called subdean 13 Feb. 1299 (CPL I 580 = Reg. Bon. VIII no. 2924), but presum. a mistake for succentor, as subdeanery occupied by M. William de Blyth (list 6). Occ. as succentor and proctor of chapter of York 8 March 1300 (CPL I 586 = Reg. Bon. VIII no. 3482).

Alexander

Not a can. First occ. as succentor 1185 × 1205 (EYC II nos. 852-3) and 18 Aug. 1191 × Jan. 1194 (YMF I no. 37). Occ. frequently (e.g. ibid. II nos. 52, 63-4, 68, 71, 96-7). Last occ. [1201] (ibid. I no. 40, temp. Hugh Murdac, archdcn. of Cleveland, list 10) and after 1201 (ibid. no. 101 and EYC V 148, both temp. R[alph] de Kyme, archdcn. of Cleveland, list 10). Not same as Alexander of Bayeux, with whom he occ. (EYC V 148).
