Sottovagina, of Cleveland, list 10], Osbert [of Bayeux, of Richmond, list 13] and Walter [of London, of York, list 9] (EEA V no. 43, a spurious charter carrying a prob. genuine witness-list). Therefore archdcn. of Nottingham.]

Thurstan

preb. Apesthorpe, list 15

First occ. as archdcn. 1121 × c. 1128 (EEA V no. 31, which is to be dated later than the witness-clause of no. 43, in which Thurstan does not occ., see Geoffrey above). Also occ. 1128, in Normandy (Cal. Docs. France no. 1410), and c. 1125 × 1133 and 1135 × 40 (EEA V nos. 74, 47). Addressed (with abp.) in royal writ concerning church of Clayworth (Notts.) and therefore archdcn. of Nottingham (Regesta II no. 1842). Geoffrey Turcople

preb. unident., list 50

First occ., as Geoffrey archdcn., 1137 × 25 Jan. 1140 (EYC I no. 116, cal. EEA V no. 61; cf. EYC III no. 1470, cal. EEA V no. 58, as 'G.'). Also occ. 4 July 1139 × 25 Jan. 1140 (EYC I no. 150, cal. Called Geoffrey 'Turcople' by John of Hexham, who describes him as 'celebris peritie in scholari eruditione' (John of Hexham p. 305). Therefore to be identified with Geoffrey 'Turcopula', who occ. without title 1138 × 25 Jan. 1140 (EYC IX no. 116, cal. Mowbray Chs. no. 288; (fn. 112) cf. Cart. Whitby no. 238). John [son of Letold]

preb. Langtoft, list 32

Although John archdcn. of Nottingham never appears as 'son of Letold', he is almost certainly to be identified with John son of Letold, previously archdcn. of Cleveland (list 10). (fn. 114) Occ. as John archdcn. of Nottingham several times during abp. Roger's legation, so after 1164 (cart. of Sir Henry Pierpoint: BL MS Loans 29/60 fo. 263r = EEA XX no. 6; EYC I no. 675 = Cart. Guisborough no. 816 = EEA XX no. +43; EYC I nos. 282, 285 = EEA XX nos. 126, 125 respectively), before late 1171 (EYC I no. 161 = EEA XX no. 133), (fn. 115) 1164 × 74, perhaps 1173 or 1174 (EYC II no. 978 = EEA XX no. 17), 1164 × 74 (EYC VI no. 82 = EEA XX no. 55), c. 1171 × 22 Nov. 1181 (Selby Coucher II no. 757 = EYC XII no. 7 = EEA XX no. 93; EYC × no. 69 = EEA XX no. 101), 1177 × 22 Nov. 1181 (Reg. Melton II fo. 534v = EEA XX no. 35; cf. HCY III 75-7 = Mon. Ang. VI 1181-2 = EEA XX no. 129). Last occ. Sept. 1179 × 22 Nov. 1181 (Cart. Treas. York no. 5 = EEA XX no. 138). D. about the same time as abp. Roger, so c. 22 Nov. 1181 (William of Newburgh p. 227). A shrewd and wealthy man, adviser to abp. Roger, with whom he had co-operated in all things (ibid.). His chapl. Geoffrey in papal court, reconciled 1200 (ibid. IV 126). Occ. frequently. Became dean, nom. 20 Sept. 1214 (list 2).

M. Thomas de Wythen

preb. Apesthorpe, list 15

Perhaps occ. as vice-archdcn. of Cleveland 1217 × 38 (list 10, note to Matthew Scot). First occ. as archdcn. of Nottingham c. 16 March 1262 (cart. Byland: BL Egerton MS 2823 old fo. 204). Occ. several times, last 13 June 1272 (Reg. Giffard p. 89). Archdcn. of York by 11 Jan. 1277 (list 9).

Certainly archdcn. of Nottingham by May 1285 × Apr. 1287 (Reg. Nic. IV no. 657 (referring to temp. Honorius IV), cal. CPL I 496). Occ. apparently 26 May 1262 (Cal. Charter Rolls IV 460), but as his predecessor was still in office at that time, some emendation of the date is required, perhaps 1282 (suggested by Clay, YMF I 44). Also can. of Southwell by 1267 (Reg. Giffard p. 63). D. as archdcn. by 29 Dec. 1286 (Reg. Romeyn I 255). Perhaps to be identified with M. Footnotes

  • 112. Before the retirement of abp. Thurstan, list 1.
  • 113. A man called Willam Turcople occ. before 1174, EYC II no. 683.
  • 114. See the arguments set out by Clay, 'Archdeacons' p. 416, and by Marie Lovatt, EEA XX introduction. The most compelling is the fact that John and John son of Letold never appear together: for example, of a pair of charters given at much the same time, concerning the same gift and having similar witnesses, John son of Letold archdcn. attests one (Cart. Rievaulx no. 190) and John archdcn. of Nottingham attests the other (ibid. no. 237 = EEA XX no. 82).
  • 115. Before Jeremy, can. of York, became archdcn. of Cleveland (list 10).
  • 116. Usually called Robert Fitz Ralph. He was son of William son of Ralph, who held property in Derbys. (Cart. of Darley, ed. R. R. Darlington (2 vols.: Derbys. Archaeol. Soc., 1945) II 535) and was sheriff of Notts. and Derbys. 1170-80 and seneschal of Normandy 1178-1200 (see Clay, 'Archdeacons' pp. 422-3).
  • 117. Presum. Skipton on Swale, N.R. Henry was a Master by 1252; for his career, see Biog. Ox. III 1708.
  • 118. Son of Adam le Brus of Pickering (N.R.) (Reg. Newark p. 209 n.) and brother of M. Robert of Pickering, prebs. Bilton and Holme (lists 17, 29). He was an Oxford Master by 1275 and D.Cn.L. by 1286; for his career, see Biog. Ox. III 1533-4.
