TREASURY

Evercreech (Som.): conf. to bp. Giso by kg. Edward Confessor May 1065 (Keynes, 'Giso' app. I no. 9); bp.'s manor TRE and in 1086, with a pr. (DB I 89c; Keynes p. 270). Martock: royal manor in 1086 (queen Edith TRE) (DB I 87a).

Church of St Cuthbert, Wells, belonged to treas. before 4 March 1208, when it was exch. by bp. Jocelin for church of Evercreech (Cal. Ch. Rolls V 26). Evercreech exch. by bp. Jocelin for churches of Martock (saving portion of abbot and monks of Mont Saint-Michel) 1219 × 36 (Cal. I 51). Tithes of Martock and other payments due to treas. and his obligations listed 1226 (ibid. pp. 36-7; cf. ibid. pp. 448-9, and Reg. Drokensford p. 10).

Valuation 1291 £33 6s 8d, including portion from Martock church (Taxatio pp. 197b, 199b). Pension from church of Weston[-super-Mare] 100 pounds of wax 1291 (ibid. p. 197b).

Thomas de Monte Acuto (fn. 3)

Occ. without title, not yet treas., Dec. 1199 × late 1200 (EEA X no. 247). Occ. with full name and title once only, Lent 1195 × 8 Aug. 1205 (ibid. no. 262). Occ. as T. treas. at el. of bp. Jocelin, early 1206 (below, app. 2 no. 5). Occ. as Thomas treas. twice: 4 March 1208 (Cal. Ch. Rolls V 26), and 8 March 1208 (Chart. Glastonbury I 67).

Peter [? of Chichester]

Occ. as Peter treas. five times: 2 Oct. 1213 (Cal. I 490), 1214 (Curia Regis Rolls VII 238), 1213 × 19 (Cal. I 70), prob. before 11 July 1215 (Chart. Bath II 14 (no. 58)), (fn. 4) and 16 July 1217 (ibid. p. 21 (no. 103)). Prob. to be identified with Peter archdcn. of Taunton, who occ. 2 Dec. 1217 and 28 May 1217 × 27 May 1218 (list 12), and with Peter of Chichester, can. from before Dec. 1209 (unident. preb., list 67), who was dean by Apr. 1220 (list 3).

Godfrey Walensis

Occ. as treas. three times only: with full name and title 2 Dec. 1217 (Adam de Domerham I 297), and as Godfrey treas. 28 May 1218 × 27 May 1219 (Cart. Bruton no. 65) and 8 Apr. 1219 (Chart. Bath II 22 (no. 105)).

M. Richard of Kenilworth

Chanc. by 12 Jan. 1236 (list 5). Thought by Watkin to have combined dignities of treas. and chanc. (Watkin, 'Precs., chancs. and treas.' p. 84). (fn. 5)

First occ., as Henry treas., 13 Jan. 1236 (Cal. I 37). Occ. frequently with full name and title (e.g. ibid. pp. 78, 99, 122). Last occ., as Henry treas., 14 Nov. and 11 × 18 Nov. 1251 (ibid. pp. 132, 451 = II 564 (no. 83)), and as H. treas., together with H[ugh de Rumenal] subdean, his successor as treas., 9 March 1252 (ibid. I 131), 15 Aug. 1252 (below, app. 3 no. 8 F), and 13 July 1254 (Cal. I 136). Commem. in St John Baptist Term (ibid. II 12). Not likely to be identified with Henry of London who occ. as can., first 19 Sept. 1236, last c. 1245 (unident. preb., list 67).

Hugh de Rumenal (fn. 7)

Can. by 7 Aug. 1239 (unident. preb., list 67); subdean by 11 Sept. 1244, last occ. 13 July 1254 (list 7). First occ., as Hugh treas., 20 Feb. 1256 (Cal. I 137). Occ. several times with full name and title (e.g. ibid. pp. 57, 106, 141). Last occ., as Hugh treas., 23 Apr. 1263 (Chart. Glastonbury I 26). Certainly d. (full name and title) before 8 Nov. 1268 (Cal. II 567 (no. 96)). Arrangements for his chantry (ibid.; also ibid. I 57, 106, 114, 402-3); chantry at altar of the Holy Sacrament (Dean Cosyn p. 20). Commem. 6 March (Cal. I 106 and Dean Cosyn p. 153; cf. Cal. II 12).

Nicholas son of Nicholas [of Bitton]

Preb. by royal gr. 27 Apr. 1264; occ. as can. 10 Feb. 1267 (preb. Barton St David, list 14). First occ., as N. treas., 17 June 1269 (Cal. I 452). As Nicholas treas. had faculty to attend schools for 3 years to study theology, dated 23 July 1269 (ibid. p. 109). Called Nicholas son of Nicholas several times (e.g. ibid. pp. 148, 446, 451-2). Last occ. 12 March 1282 (CCR 1279-88 p. 180). A relative of the Bitton family, included in prayers at Bitton chantry (Cal. II 575 (no. 134) = I 531). (fn. 8)

Reginald de Legh (fn. 9)

Prob. already treas. when occ. without title, his stall on prec.'s side, 11 Oct. 1284 (below, app. 4 no. 17). Occ. as treas. 23 Apr. 1287 (Cal. I 450). Papal disp. on kg.'s recommendation, to retain treasury together with one other benefice 28 Jan. 1292 (CPL I 551 = Reg. Nic. IV no. 6663).
