Office said to be of little value, (fn. 1) addit. gr. by bp. Jocelin of 'Landshareleg' and land in Wells 4 March 1208 (Cal. Ch. Rolls V 26).

First occ., as A. succentor, before 27 Nov. 1191 (Cal. I 41-2, a ch. conf. c. 1189 × 27 Nov. 1191 in EEA X no. 168), and as Adam succentor c. 1189 × 15 June 1198 (Cal. I 135). (fn. 2) Also occ. Lent 1195 × 8 Aug. 1205 (EEA X no. 205) and n.d. (Cal. I 42). Unnamed succentor occ. prob. May 1203 (Select Canterbury Cases p. 11). Occ. as A. succentor at el. of bp. Jocelin, early 1206 (below, app. 2 no. 10). Property deeds show that he is to be identified with M. Adam Fisicus (physician), can., who had land in Mountroy Lane (Cal. I 29, II 556 (no. 43) = I 527; see Bailey, Canonical Houses pp. 42, 47, 48, 62).

Thomas of Tournai

Can. prob. from before 27 Nov. 1191 (unident. preb., list 67). Occ. as succentor three times, together with M. Ralph of Lechlade prec.: 8 March 1208 (Chart. Glastonbury I 67), n.d. (Chart. Bath II 16 (no. 70), and 28 May 1206 × Dec. 1209 (Cal. II 553 (no. 37)). Prec. by 2 Oct. 1213 (list 4).

Simon

Occ. as succentor twice only, together with Thomas of Tournai prec.: 2 Oct. 1213 as S. succentor (Cal. I 490) and c. 1214 as Simon succentor (ibid. II 550 (no. 21)).

Robert de Camera

Can. by early 1206, and occ. as can. 1219 × 33 (unident. preb., list 67). Prob. to be identified with Robert succentor who occ. 8 Apr. 1219 (Chart. Bath II 22 (no. 105)) and as M. Robert succentor Oct. 1220 (Curia Regis Rolls IX 229), and with R. succentor who occ. 1220/1 (EEA IX no. 247). Occ. with full name and title twice c. 1230 (Cal. I 29; II 553 (no. 35)). Last occ., as R. succentor, 11 × 18 Nov. 1236 (ibid. I 70).

Nicholas de Seleburne (fn. 3)

First occ. as succentor c. 1241 (Cal. I 522; for date cf. ibid. p. 527) and 18 Aug. 1243 (ibid. p. 98). Occ. frequently. Last occ., as N. succentor, 3 Feb. 1252 (ibid. p. 138). Commem. in Michaelmas Term (ibid. II 11).

Richard of Bitton

Can. by 10 Aug. 1251 (unident. preb., list 67). Occ. as succentor 1255 × 68 (Cal. II 559 (no. 60)). Prob. to be identified with R. succentor who occ. 15 Aug. 1252 (below, app. 3 no. 13 F), and with Richard succentor who occ. 5 March 1260 (below, app. 3 no. 13 G) and 22 May 1264 (Chart. Bath II 65 (no. 304)) and 8 Jan. 1267 (ibid. p. 67 (no. 319)). Prec. by 29 Sept. 1269 (list 4).

M. Walter of Lechlade

Can. by 8 Jan. 1267 (unident. preb., list 67). First occ. as succentor 1268/9, issuing lease on a house in Wells (Cal. II 567 (no. 97)). Occ. several times, concerning property in Wells (ibid. pp. 567-71 (nos. 98, 101, 104, 113)). Last occ. 13 Jan. 1278 (ibid. pp. 570-1 (no. 113)) and as W. succentor 4 Apr. 1279 (Chart. Bath II 99 (no. 504)). His obit mentioned (Cal. I 148). Presum. to be identified with M. Walter of Lechlade, can. and prec. of Exeter, who was still alive 31 March 1283 (Reg. Pontissara I 250-1), but was murdered by M. Luke de Sancto Leonardo before 12 or 13 Apr. 1284 (Reg. Pecham II 69-70; cf. Reg. Epp. Peckham III 919-20), commem. 9 Nov. (Exeter Cath. Libr. MS 3625 fo. vi).

M. Robert de Brandon

Can. by 13 Dec. 1274, last occ. 23 July 1283 (unident. preb., list 67). Occ. as succentor once only, 15 Nov. 1284 × Apr. 1290 (Chart. Bath II 96 (no. 487).
