LIST 30 PREBENDARIES OF PRESTON

PREBEND

At Preston Wynne, a manor of the church of Hereford, two cans. held 4 hides in 1066 and a clk. and a miles held 4 hides in 1086 (DB I 181d). By c.1291, in the taxation of pope Nicholas IV, the preb. of Preston is stated to be endowed with l½ acres at Preston, but the assessment of the preb. at £8 (including revenue from the l½ acres of £5 6s 8d) suggests that the word acres may be an error for a larger area, perhaps cars. (Taxatio p. 169a). In 1294 the preb. of Preston was assessed at 12m in the prebendal taxation list entered into bp. Swinfield's register (Reg. Swinfield p. 305). Valor III 11 assessed this preb. at £10 7s 4½d.

Coll. to, but then deprived of, preb. of Preston by bp. John le Breton 1272 (Yates, 'Bishop Peter' p. 315, citing Reg, Swinfield pp. 70, 258-68 and Household Expenses of Richard de Swinfield I pp. clxxix-clxxxii); disputed this deprivation, bringing case against bp. Cantilupe at the curia summer 1279 (Reg. Cantilupe pp. 209, 214), July 1285, July 1289 and Dec. 1290 (Reg. Swinfield pp. 70, 219-20, 280, 247); eventually successful, having his preb. restored 1291 (see below).

Swinfield pp. 258- 68); referred to as having been can. 1271 × 1274 (ibid. p. 57); occ. as absent can., no mention of preb., 24 June 1273 (Capes, Charters p. 138); held preb. of Preston until he became bp., after which he coll. Henry of Woodstock to it 11 Sept. 1275 (Reg. Cantilupe p. 8). Bp., el. 14 June 1275, temps. 26 June, cons. 8 Sept. (list 1).

Cantilupe 11 Sept. 1275 (date of mand. to install (Reg. Cantilupe p. 8); the deed of coll. is dated 9 Oct. 1275 (ibid. p. 16, and cf. Reg. Swinfield p. 71)). M. Robert de Fileby

Occ., prob, not yet can. of Hereford, as attorney of M. Adam de Fileby, 6 June 1281 (CPR 1272-81 p. 443); coll. to preb., vac. by the d. of Henry of Woodstock, and claimed by M. Peter de Langona, by bp. Cantilupe, at an unspecified date, presumably late Sept. 1277 (Reg. Swinfield p. 71); occ. possessing preb. of Preston 1291 (Reg. Swinfield pp. 263, 264; Taxatio p. 169a). Presumably was deprived of his preb. when M. Peter de Langona was restored.

M. Peter de Langona

See above. Restored to preb. of Preston, of which he had been deprived 1272, in 1291 after a papal judgement in his favour 26 July 1290 (Reg. Swinfield pp. 258-68; Yates, 'Bishop Peter' p. 315, citing Reg. Swinfield pp. 70, 258-68 and Household Expenses of Richard de Swinfield I pp. clxxix-clxxxii); occ. as can. 29 Apr. 1293 (Reg. Swinfield p. 299); occ. as resident can., preb. unspecified, 29 Sept. 1295 (Capes, Charters p. 169); d. by 12 Nov. 1299 when his preb. of Preston, now vac., was bestowed by bp. Swinfield on an unnamed clk., evidently Roger of Canterbury (Reg. Swinfield p. 531, and see next entry).

Roger of Canterbury

Prob. the unnamed clk. coll. to the preb. of Preston 12 Nov. 1299 (Reg. Swinfield p. 531); Roger of Canterbury res. Preston to become preb. of Wellington by 17 May 1303, when his successor, William of Kingscote, was coll. (Reg. Swinfield p. 534; 2 Fasti II 44). Roger d. before 1 June 1303 (Reg. Swinfield p. 534; 2 Fasti II 50).
