Perhaps occ. as Abraham, bp.'s chapl., 1146/7 (Llandaff Acta no. 2). Occ. as Abraham Gobion, not called can., c. 1170 x 1176 (Cartae I 127-8, 128- 9), (fn. 1) and certainly can. of Llandaff when occ. 1170s (ibid. pp. 140-1). (fn. 2) Also occ. presum. still can. Controller of wardrobe Jan. 1255 - Sept. 1257 (Tout, Chapters I 261, VI 28). Perhaps successor of Robert la Warre in his preb. (Val. Norw. p. 319, where Aubrey's name is written over Robert's deleted name).

Not called can. Occ. as pr. and brother of bp. Urban, in bp. Urban's company at his d. in Rome, on or shortly before 9 Oct. [1134] (Cartae I 90-1; cf. Llandaff Acta p. xii n. 3; above, list 9). Prob. to be identified with Caradog of Llancarfan, hagiographer (for whom see Sharpe, Handlist no. 179), who was mentioned by Geoffrey of Monmouth (Historia Regum Britanniae c. 208).

David le Grant (Legranbrit)

Occ. as can. of Llandaff in opposition to el. as bp. of M. Philip de Stanton 1287 (CPL I 519; above, list 9). Not called can. 2 Feb. 1292, when occ. as subdcn., rector of St George's-super-Ely (CPL I 548). D. before Jan. 1305 (LL p. 295).

Ifor II

Occ. as Ifor pr., son of Wrgan (and thus grandson of bp. Urban), 1193 x 1218 (Cartae I 159; above, list 9). Perhaps to be identified with 'Ivorus', can. of Llandaff, who falsely claimed to be a can. of St Davids at Rome winter 1202-3 (Gir. Cambr. III 240, 248; see below, list 46, Ifor). Occ. as can. of Llandaff 3 July 1219 (Pat. Rolls 1216-25 p. 195); 27 Oct. 1219 x 28 Jan. 1230 (Cartae II 513; cf. ibid. p. 255); and 23 Feb. 1230 (Pat. Rolls 1225-32 pp. 326-7). Last occ. as can. temp. bp. Elias (1 Dec. 1230-13 May 1240) (Cartae II 496-7).

? Isaac

Not called can. of Llandaff. Occ. as bp.'s chapl. 1126/7 (Chs. of Earldom of Gloucester no. 109), and as clerk in bp.'s company at his d. in Rome, on or shortly before 9 Oct. [1134] (Cartae I 90-1). Cf. Isaac chapl. mentioned in Life of St Dubricius (LL p. 85) and Isaac pr. who occ. 1148 x 66 (Llandaff Acta no. 8). Not likely to be the same as Isaac dean of Penychen who occ. in 1170s (ibid. no. 17; Cartae I 128-9, 141), as suggested by J. R. Davies ('The book of Llandaf in its early twelfth-century Cambro-Norman context' (unpublished PhD dissertation, University of Cambridge, 1997) p. 60).

M. John

Not called can. when occ. 1146/7 (Llandaff Acta no. 2). Occ. as can. of Llandaff once only, 1148 x 66 (ibid. no. 8). Cf. J- who occ. as clerk in bp.'s company at his d. in Rome, on or shortly before 9 Oct. [1134] (Cartae I 90-1).

Perhaps can. of Llandaff although not called can. when occ. as M. John Word' temp. bp. Elias (1 Dec. 1230-13 May 1240) (Cartae II 496-7) and as M. John Gurda temp. Maurice archdcn., Maurice treas. Mathias

Occ. as can. of Llandaff once only, 1254, his preb. worth 70s. (Val. Norw. p. 319). Not likely to be identified with Mathias clerk who occ. 1200 x 18 (Llandaff Acta no. 54). Cf. M. Mathias of Brecon, can. of St Davids, who occ. in 1220s (below, list 46).

? Maurice of Christchurch

Perhaps can. of Llandaff when occ. June 1234 (Cartae II 490-1).

Occ. as can. of Llandaff twice: 13 June 1253 (CPR 1247-58 p. 197) and 8 July 1256 (ibid. p. 486, 'Markeseia' for 'Markeleia'). Presum. to be identified with M. Peter de Bella Aqua who occ. as can. 1254, his preb. worth 3s. 4d. (Val. Norw. p. 318; cf. LL p. 285, as M. Peter). Cf. M. Hugh de Bella Aqua, presum. a Savoyard from Aiguebelle (above).

Philip de Kensinton

Occ. as can. of Llandaff twice: 13 June 1253 (CPR 1247-58 p. 197) and 1254, his preb. worth 100s. (Val. Norw. pp. 318-19; cf. LL p. 285, giving 'Beensingt").

Ralph

Occ. as can. of Llandaff, bp.'s company at his d. in Rome, on or shortly before 9 Oct. [1134] (Cartae I 90-1). Perhaps to be identified with Ralph, archdcn. of Llandaff from before 1159, who had prob. been succeeded before 1179 (above, list 10), and/or with Ralph of Llancarfan, who occ. without title 1148 x 66 (Llandaff Acta no. 8; cf. above, list 10).

M. Ralph Mailoc (Maelog)

Not called can. when occ. 1193 x 1218 (Llandaff Acta no. 49). First occ. as can. of Llandaff c. 1217, before 14 Oct. 1217 (Cartae II 442). (fn. 9) Occ. several times. Clerk of earl of Gloucester from 1214 x 16 to d. (Earldom of Gloucester Chs. pp. 11-12, nos. 4, 93, 140, 148). D. June 1231, presum. still can. (Ann. Tewkes. pp. 79-80).

M. Ralph de Neketon

Kg.'s clerk by 9 July 1238 (CPR 1232-47 p. 225), in kg.'s service in Gascony 1253-4 (ibid. 1247-58 pp. 231, 329, 346, 380). Occ. as can. of Llandaff once only, 1254, his preb. worth 24s. (Val. Appd. archdcn. of Llandaff by Richard de Clare, earl of Gloucester, s.v., and occ. 13 March 1243, but forced to res. (above, list 10). Occ. as can. of Llandaff 1254, his preb. worth 4s. (Val. Norw. p. 318; cf. LL p. 284).

M. William of Radnor (the younger)

Occ. as can. of Llandaff four times: 1271/2 (R. Rawlinson, History and Antiquities of ... Hereford (1717) app. p. 36 (from cart. Hereford, Bodl. MS James 23)) and prob. 1270s (ibid. app. pp. 77, 79, 82 (also from cart.)). Commem. as benefactor at Hereford, together with his brother M. Simon, 1 Sept. (1 Fasti VIII 139 and n. 316; above, list 10). Not to be confused, as in Llandaff Acta, with M. William of Radnor, treas. of Llandaff (above, list 13), who became bp. of Llandaff, el. 28 July 1256; temps. 14 Sept.; cons. 7 Jan. 1257; d. 9 Jan. 1266 (above, list 9).
