Footnotes

  • 1. The reason for this vacancy of 12 years is that the lands from which the revenues of the prebend were drawn had become lost into private hands. In 1535 the corpus of the prebend consisted of glebe in Arlington and Beddingham valued at £1 13 4 and a pension of £1 from Blatchington rectory (Valor Ecclesiasticus (1810-34) 1 301). However, this had somehow disappeared by 1650, when the parliamentary commissioners made this report (28 May): 'Concerning the prebend of Hampsted noe Mannor of lands or Tenements are found to bee belonginge to itt but upon Inquirie about itt, Itt appeareth that there is a certaine Howse and Farme Lands called Hempsted within the Rape of Pevensey in the County of Sussex and that the same is the Estate and Interest of a private man, but that itt was a prebend or belonginge to any prebendarie of the Church of Chichester Appeareth not' (Lamb., Comm. XIIa/2 ff. 323-4). The lands were not recovered at the Restoration, so the revenue of the prebend was nothing, while the liability remained for installation fees, first-fruits, tenths and stall wages.
  • 2. The patron should have been the Crown, by lapse, but the patronage of such a benefice was not worth claiming.
  • 3. Willinger, in error, in Le Neve-Hardy.
