Table to illustrate suspension of prebends at Ely, 1841-54, in accordance with Stat. 3 & 4 Vic. c. 113
s. 12 And be it enacted, That so soon as conveniently may be, and by the Authority herein-after provided, the Two Canonries in the Chapter of the Cathedral Church of Ely which shall be secondly and thirdly vacant shall be permanently annexed and united to the Regius Professorships of Hebrew and Greek respectively in the University of Cambridge.
s. 13 And be it enacted, That ... Two Canonries shall be suspended in the following Order; ... That in the Chapter of the said Church of Ely the Two Canonries fourthly and fifthly vacant shall be suspended.
On the occurrence of the second vacancy, s. 12 was put into effect by Order in Council 11 Aug. 1848, when the original 8th prebend was permanently annexed to the Regius professorship of Hebrew at Cambridge, and the prebend which would next fall vacant (in the event, the original 3rd) was to be permanently annexed to the Regius professorship of Greek (Lond. Gaz. no. 20887).
Thus the prebends were reduced by 1854 to the requisite number of six.
