524. WILLIAM, BARON OF GREYSTOK, CRAYSTOK or CREISTOK.
Writ, 20 July, 33 Edward III.
BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Rokesdon, Saturday before Michaelmas, 33 Edward III.
Wyboldeston. The reversion of the manor held of the king in chief by knight’s service, after the death of John de Rokesdon, Alice his wife and John their son, for the greater security of a grant of the manor for three years by the said William to John de Rokesdon.
The said William died about the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last. Ralph his son, aged 6 years and more, is his heir.

HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Chesthunte, Sunday before St. Denis, 33 Edward III.
Chesthunte. Tenements called ‘Eldeknytes’ and ‘Dunstalles’ (extent given), including 7a. meadow in ‘le Hynnyng,’ 12a. pasture in Bugwell and pasture for 3 1/2 beasts in the marsh of Tunford and an enclosed moor containing 1a. pasture, held of the earl of Richmond by service of 2s. 6d. yearly for ward of Richemond castle. One Adam Corry came with Thomas de Motherby to Chesthunte about the feast of SS. Peter and Paul last, exact day not known, and entered these tenements by way of seisin, but the jury do not know by what title, or whether the said baron was alive at that time or not.
The said baron died on 10 July last. Heir as above, aged 7 years and more.

YORK. Inq. taken at York, Wednesday after St. Bartholomew, 33 Edward III.
Brunnum. The manor (extent given), including a common oven in the hands of the tenants, held with its appurtenances of the king in chief, as of the crown, by homage and fealty and by service of a fourth part of a barony, as they understand.
Appurtenances of the manor:—
Belby. 7s. rent of a free tenant.
Seton. 10s. rent of free tenants, and 12d. for the mill-pond of Gildusdale.
Littelthorp. 12d. rent of a free tenant.
Spaldyngton. 6s. 8d. rent of a free tenant.
Ulram, Etton and Drynghou. 25s. 2d. rents of free men.
Milyngton. 2d. rent of a free tenant.
Welbery. 14s. 10d. rent of free tenants, 6l. 12s. rent of villeins, 11l. 6s. 8d. rent of tenants at will and cottars and 3s. 4d. perquisites of court, held of the heirs of Gilbert Haunsard by fealty.
Butterwik. The manor (extent given), including a ruinous chief messuage, dilapidated windmill and a common oven and rents in Shirburn, Boythorp, Flixton, Folketon and Flotmanby and a common oven in the hands of the tenants held of Peter de Malo Lacu by knight’s service, as they understand.
Hildreskelf. The manor (extent given), including closes called ‘Brandrise’ and a little park of oaks with deer, held of Roger Bygot, knight, by knight’s service, and:—
Galmethorp, an appurtenance of Hildreskelf. 62s. 5d. rent of tenants at will.
Thorp Basset. The manor (extent given) held of the abbot of St. Alban’s by service of 1d. yearly and fealty, including:—
Scakelthorp, an appurtenance of Thorp Basset. 10s. 10d. rent of free tenants, 12l. 8s. 6d. rent of villeins and tenants at will, and 39s. 6d. rent of cottars, and 18 hens and 180 eggs yearly.
Osmonderley. A piece of land called ‘le Ha …’ held of the bishop of Durham by fealty.
In his lifetime the deceased gave to John de Aymonderby for his good service in war and peace a yearly rent of 10 marks for life charged on the manor of Thorp Basset by his writing, dated Friday after St. John before the Latin Gate, 30 Edward III. He also gave to Richard le Forester for life the office of forester of all the woods and parks of Hilderskelf, receiving every year … strikes of corn, for every week throughout the year 3d. and every year a robe from the said manor of Hilderskelf. He also gave to the same Richard and Ellen his wife for their lives a messuage and half an acre of land in Hildreskelf formerly held by Roger Bakester; to William de Heghleghet (?) called le Coke (?) for life 40s. yearly rent from Thomas Bernard for land held by him for life in the same. The manor was charged by deceased’s ancestors with 8l. yearly … . . to and his heirs. ……… .
As to the knights’ fees and advowsons he held they know nothing yet (adhuc) owing to the shortness of time.
He died on 10 July last. Ralph his son, aged . . on the feast of St. Mark next, is his heir.
YORK. Inq. taken at Northallerton, 24 August, 33 Edward III.
Moreton on Swale. The manor (extent given), including a ferry (batella ultra aquam) in the hands of a tenant rendering 13s. 4d., with tenements in Thirntoftes belonging, held of Sir John of Gaunt (de Gandavo), earl of Richmond, by knight’s service.
Crossethwayt. The manor (extent given), including 4a. land called ‘Cragland,’ held of the heirs of Henry son of Hugh by fealty and service of 2s. yearly.
Thornton on the Moor. The manor held by Ralph de Nevill and Alice his wife, for her life, of the inheritance of the heir of the deceased, of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee by rendering to the deceased and his heirs 53s. 4d. yearly.
Nidde. The manor formerly held in demesne by the said baron, but given by him about a year before his death to Thomas de Ingelby for 20 years, at a rent of a rose yearly in the time of roses, if demanded, for the first six years and 20l. yearly for the remainder of the term; held of the king as of the honour of Aumale by knight’s service.
He died on 10 July last. Heir, Ralph, as above, aged 7 years on the feast of St. Mark next.
NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Newcastle upon Tyne, Monday after St. Bartholomew, 33 Edward III.
Morpath. The castle, manor and members (extents given) held of the king in chief, as of the crown, by homage and fealty and by service of two knights’ fees as a moiety of the barony of Merley, and by service of rendering yearly to the king at his exchequer of Newcastle upon Tyne for castle guard and cornage 31s. 2d.
Members of the manor:—
Heppescotes, including a common brewhouse.
Tranewell.
Stanyngton, including the wood of Blitheden and a common brewhouse.
Horsley, including farm of lands called ‘Bordland,’ sheilings (scaling), Horsleyhirst, and 3s. 4d. for easements in the forest paid by Robert de Beiremore.
Benton, including part of a common brewhouse and the agistment of Firthmore.
Killyngworth.
He held no other lands in demesne in the county, and concerning knights’ fees and advowsons the jury know nothing at present on account of the shortness of time.
Angerton. The manor with appurtenances in Hedon (extent given), including a fishery in the Tyne, held jointly by the said baron and Joan his wife, who survives, of the king in chief by homage and fealty and by service of two knights’ fees and a half as a moiety of the barony of Bolbek, and by service of rendering yearly to the king at the exchequer of Newcastle upon Tyne by the hands of the sheriff 34s. 4d. for castle guard and 8s. 9d. for cornage.
Benrig. Certain tenements in the hands of tenants at will paying 4l. yearly, held jointly as above of David de Strabolgi, earl of Athol, as of the manor of Mitford, by homage and fealty and by service of 13 1/2d. yearly for cornage.
Ulgham. Ralph de Nevill and Alice his wife hold the manor for the life of the latter of the inheritance of the deceased, rendering 10l. yearly.

CUMBERLAND AND WESTMORLAND. Inq. taken at Penreth, Saturday the feast of St. Bartholomew, 33 Edward III.
CUMBERLAND. Craystok. Two parts of the manor (extent given), including a park called ‘le Hevedpark,’ two parts of a park called ‘Gilkamban,’ a spot (plac’) called ‘le Heved’ with a sheiling (scalinga) below, another called ‘le Scalefeld,’ a corn-mill, a fulling-mill, tenants of ‘Forland’ and ‘le Cogland’ and tenants of burgages, held, with other tenements now held by Ralph de Nevill, knight, and Alice his wife, late the wife of Ralph baron of Craystok, deceased, of the dower of the same Alice, of the king in chief as of the crown, by homage and fealty and by service of a barony, and by service of rendering to the king yearly at the exchequer of Carlisle by the hands of the sheriff of Cumberland 4l. for cornage and doing suit at the county [court] of Carlisle every month.
Appurtenances of the manor of Craystok:—
Muthirby. 7s. 5d. rent.
Staynton. 32s. 7 1/2d. rents and farm of a mill and of the mill pond of Sotbred.
Neubiggyng. 20s. 4d. rents, including the farm of William de Laton.
Jonby. 8s. 11d. rents.
Grysdale. Tenants in the forest paying 17l. 7s. 9d.
Mathirdale. Tenants in the forest paying 11l. 10s. 7d.
‘Le Wakethwayt.’ A place (plac’) so called, in the hands of tenants paying 40s.
Berier. The hamlet, 103s. 1d. rents.
Wethirmelok. 4l. 6s. 9d. rents.
Sparkheved. 4l. 10s. 4d. rents.
Divers cornage tenants within the barony pay 4l.
Glencou (sic: Blencow). 10d. rent of a free tenant instead of one plough and two men mowing for one day in autumn.
The pannage of the whole barony is worth 18d.
There is a profit of 23s. 6d. from the office of master forester, and a profit of 53s. 4d. from the farm of the four foresterships of Craystok.
Perquisites of the court of the barony are worth 40s.
He held no other lands in the county.

Adam de Blencowe had of the gift of the deceased 100s. yearly for life charged on the manor of Craystock; and John Wrenne had the custody of the park called ‘le Hevedpark’ for life, receiving 2d. daily from the coffers (coffris) of the baron, and 23s. 6d. yearly from the rent of the office of master forester.
WESTMORLAND. Dufton. The manor (extent given), including herbage of Aykescogh and Flasescogh, tenants of ‘Forland,’ a brewhouse, the mill pond of Brampton, 2s. 2 1/2d. farm of Hallisted, agistment on Meldon, pannage there and rents of tenants at Hynderygges, held of Sir Roger de Clifford by homage and fealty and by service of rendering yearly at the said Roger’s exchequer of Appelby 25s. 6d. for cornage, and by doing suit at the county [court] of Appelby every month. The manor was charged by the deceased with the yearly payment of 140s. to Giles de Orton and Maud his wife and the heirs of their bodies, and 30s. 5d. to Thomas de Slegill for life.
Writ de feodis militum &c., Wodestok, 20 November, 33 Edward III.
NORTHUMBERLAND. Extent of knights’ fees &c. taken at Morpath, Monday after Holy Trinity, 34 Edward III.
Walker. The manor held by John de Fenwyk and Thomas de Fenwyk and Joan his wife by service of one knight’s fee.
Shilvynton. The manor held by Robert de Ogle, Thomas de Fenwyk and Joan his wife and John de Fenwyk by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
North Horseleye. A fourth part of a knight’s fee held by Robert Bertram, knight, Robert Mauduyt, John de Ogle, Ellen late the wife of Robert de Ogle, son of Robert de Ogle, and Thomas de Fenwyk.
Killyngworth. A sixteenth part of a knight’s fee held by John de Killyngworth the elder, John de Kyllyngworth the younger, John de Merlay and the heirs of John Prudhom.
Stanyngton. A seventeenth part of a knight’s fee held by the abbot of Newminster and Thomas de Walton.
Great Benton. A sixth part of a knight’s fee held by Henry de Haveryngton, knight.
Morpath. The advowson of the church.
Cacheburn. The advowson of the hospital of St. John.
WESTMORELAND. Extent of knights’ fees &c. taken at Appelby, 1 March, 36 Edward III.
Brampton. The town held by Christopher de Lancastre and Thomas de Blencansop by homage and fealty and by service of 8s. 6d. yearly for cornage.
Boulton. Tenements held by the same Christopher by homage and fealty and service of 1d. for cornage.
Kesclif. The hamlet held by Robert Daubeney by homage and fealty and 16d. for cornage.
Yanenwyth. The town, with the hamlet of Ametbrig, held by William de Threlkild by homage and fealty and 6s. 8d. for cornage.
Boulton. The town held by John de Derewentwatre by homage and fealty and by service of 8s. 6d. for cornage.
Dufton. Threlkeld. The manor held by John de Derewentwatre by homage and fealty and by service of 6s. yearly for cornage and suit of court as above, and by service called ‘wytnesman’ and puture of the baron’s foresters of Grisdale.
Hoton Johan. The manor held by William de Hoton Johan by homage and fealty and by service of 20s. 8d. yearly for cornage, suit of court and ‘wytnesman’ as above, and puture of the baron’s foresters of Flascowe.
Jonby. The manor held by John de Moresby and Ellen his wife, in right of the latter, by homage and fealty and by service of 5s. 3d. yearly for cornage, suit of court and ‘wytnesman’ as above, puture of the baron’s foresters of Grisdale, and by service of ploughing yearly the manor of Creistok with ten ploughs and mowing there with twenty men.
