Inquisitions Post Mortem, Edward III, File 122

82. EDMUND BACON. (fn. 1)
Writ to enquire as to the land and heir of Edmund Bacon and who has been in possession of his lands since his death. 5 December, 27 Edward III.
NORFOLK. Inq. taken at Aylsham, 4 January, 27 Edward III.
Gresham. The manor held of the earl of Arundel as of the manor of Castellacre, service not known. Margery, late the wife of the said Edmund, was in possession of the manor from the time of his death until 7 April, 20 Edward III, on which day John de Dalton, knight, who raped the said Margery, also married her, whereby the said manor was taken into the king’s hand by reason of the forfeiture of the said John; and so the king granted the said manor to Michael de Ponyngges, with other lands &c. late of the said Edmund, as keeper, for a certain farm payable at the Exchequer; Michael de Ponynges held the manor thus from 7 April, 20 Edward III, until 10 November, 23 Edward III, on which day John de Colby, late escheator in the county, seized it into the king’s hand, and so it remained in the custody of the escheator until 13 October, 26 Edward III, on which day it was delivered to William, son of John de Molyyns, and Margery his wife by the king’s writ.
He died on 6 March, 11 Edward III. He had two daughters, Margaret and Margery. From Margaret, his first-born daughter, whom William de Kerdeston, knight, married, came Maud, whom John de Burgherssh married, and from them issued John their son, kinsman and one of the heirs of the said Edmund, age not known. Margery, whom William son of John de Molyns married, is the other heir of the said Edmund and of full age.
Writ of privy seal to the sheriff of Norfolk.
Whereas it was lately found by inquisition that Margery, late the wife of Edmund Bacoun, held of the king for her life certain lands &c. of the inheritance of Margery, daughter and heir of the said Edmund, who is of full age and married to William, son of John de Molyns, and a writ was issued to deliver the said lands to the said William and Margery as the inheritance of the said Margery; now the king understands that the said Edmund had two heirs, viz. the said Margery and one John, son of John de Burgherssh, who had married the daughter of her who was late the wife of William de Kerdiston, who was the other daughter and heir of the said Edmund; which John son of John is a minor in the king’s wardship, and so the moiety of all Edmund’s lands &c. ought to belong to the king who in default of an office was deceived in the first livery: he sends the sheriff a writ under the great seal to enquire fully with all haste possible into all the lands &c. late of the said Edmund in his bailiwick, and who are the heirs and who have occupied the lands since his death and taken the profits, and by what title &c., and to certify into the Chancery before St. Hilary next.
This seems to refer to the writ of 5 December above, which is, however, addressed to the escheator.
