	Alvedele. A third part of a carucate of land, and 13s. 4d. rent of assise from free tenants, held for life in dower of the king in chief by knight’s service, the reversion belonging to Thomas son and heir of Thomas de Alvedele, a minor still in the king’s wardship. She held no other lands &c. in the county. She died on 10 October last. The said Thomas the son, aged 20 years and more, is her heir.

BERKS.	Inq. taken at Neubury, 15 January, 43 Edward III.
	Bouklond. A messuage and a carucate of land, held jointly with Mary his wife, who survives, of Thomas de Besils by knight’s service, the reversion after Mary’s death belonging to his heirs. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 27 July last. Joan, aged 6 years, and Philippa, aged 5 years, his daughters, are his heirs.
	Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Thomas, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 28 May, 44 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at York, 10 July, 44 Edward III.
	Langbergh. 20 marks yearly rent from a moiety of the wapentake, the whole of which wapentake is held of the king in chief by service of rendering 40 marks yearly at the Exchequer. He held no other lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick. He died on 18 July last. Heirs as above (Philippa being 4 years of age).

HEREFORD AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES.	Inq. taken at Hereford, 9 September, 43 Edward III.
	Talgarth Englys. The town and lordship (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes a fulling mill, 10l. yearly rents of free and customary tenants, an intrinsic hundred held every month, and a foreign court held every month. A messuage called ‘Jonesfeld’ in the said lordship (extent given), held jointly with the lady Joan, lately his wife, who survives, of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes a croft called ‘Gylotesclos,’ a parcel of land called ‘Homme,’ 2 parcels of pasture called ‘Mulleorchard’ and ‘More,’ and a park not enclosed. Philip died on 4 August last. Elizabeth his daughter, wife of Henry de Mortymer, knight, and Mabel his daughter, wife of Hugh de Wrottesleye, knight, aged 30 years and more, are his heirs. Hugh and Mabel have a son aged 12 weeks.

SALOP.	Inq. taken at Shoffenhale, 9 September, 43 Edward III.
	Ideshale. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service jointly with Joan late his wife, who survives, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by gift of William le Bohun, late earl of Northampton, whether by licence of the king or not the jurors know not. The extent includes a park with deer, a market held every week on Monday, and a fair held on the feast of St. Matthew. Date of death and heirs as above, Elizabeth being 30 years of age and more and Mabel being 24 years of age and more.

HEREFORD AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES.	Inq. (indented) taken at Talgarth Engleys, 22 October. 43 Edward III.
	Talgarth Engleys. The town and lordship, as in the above inquisition, except that the rents of free and customary tenants are altered from 10l. to 16l. 13s. 6 1/4d. A messuage called ‘Jonesfeld’ &c., as in the above inquisition. Date of death as above. Elizabeth his daughter, aged 30 years and more, [wife of Adam Pes] (fn. 1) hale and lately the wife of Henry de Mortuo Mari, knight, is his next heir. Hugh de Wrottesleye, knight, late the husband of Mabel his daughter, now deceased (defuncte), who (que) survived her father 40 days, begat of the body of the said Mabel [a son named] (fn. 1) Hugh, now deceased, who survived his mother three weeks; and the said [Hugh de] (fn. 1) Wrottesleye claims to have his pourparty of the town and lordship by virtue of such offspring.

	Well and Skendelby. 14a. of underwood, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, worth only 10s. a year because unenclosed and almost waste. Dalby. 5s. yearly rent from Robert Greddyk’s tenement, held of the lord de Wilughby by fealty only. He died on 18 July, 43 Edward III. John his son, aged 19 years on 1 September last, is his heir.

LINCOLN.	Inq. (indented) taken at Horncastre, Saturday after Michaelmas, 43 Edward III.
	Billesby. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service, worth only 100s. a year because the pasture and meadows are most years inundated by rain. He held no other lands &c. in the county. He died on 29 August, 43 Edward III. Eleanor his daughter, aged 18 years on 1 June last, and Cecily his daughter, aged 15 years on 15 January last, are his heirs.

	Billesby. The manor is worth 10l. yearly, and is held of the king in chief by knight’s service. Peter Bavent, knight, of Billesby, died on Wednesday the feast of the Decollation of St. John the Baptist, 43 Edward III. Eleanor Bavent and Cecily Bavent, aged respectively 18 years and 16 years, are his heirs. William Chandeler of Elkyngton married Cecily after her father’s death, and a man of the county of York has married Eleanor.

316.	JOHN DE BRUNNE, SON AND HEIR OF JOHN DE BRUNNE, a minor in the king’s wardship.
	Writ of devenerunt, 12 November, 43 Edward III.
YORK.	Inq. taken at York, 18 December, 43 Edward III.
	Appilgarth by Baynton. A messuage and 6 bovates of land there came into the king’s hand by the death of John de Brune the father and by reason of the minority of John his son, now deceased. They are still in the king’s hand and are held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The messuage is entirely waste and of no value. No other lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick came into the king’s hands as above. John son of John died on the feast of the Assumption last. Richard de Brune, brother of John de Brune the father, aged 30 years and more, is heir to both father and son. John de Sheffeld, knight, was in possession of the messuage and 4 of the bovates until the death of John the son, and the escheator was in possession of the other 2 bovates and received the issues for the king’s use. Since then Hugh del Boure has been in possession of the whole, and has received the issues.

	Bryche. A messuage, 80a. land, 2a. meadow, 3a. pasture and 3s. rent, held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Dover by service of 10s. yearly for ward of the castle of Dover, and of the honor of Haghele by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee and suit every month to the court of Haghele. Little Bryche. 13a. land, held of the abbot and convent of St. John, Colcestre, by service of 3s. 4d. yearly; and 47a. arable, held of Ralph de Tendringge by service of 4s. yearly. 	Hacchesham. A messuage, a garden, a dovecot and 9a. land, held of the prioress of Derteford, lady of the manor of Hacchesham; 42a. land in Oubraifeld, held of the same prioress; 10a. land in a field called ‘Cokeshote,’ lying between the wood of the lord de Say on the south and the king’s highway on the north, held of the prior of Tounbrige; 7a. land in a croft called ‘Absolon Croft,’ and in the same croft 5a. wood worth 40d. a year and no more because it is nothing but brambles and thorns; all held of the same prioress by knight’s service, rendering 8s. 11 1/2d. at Easter and Martinmas, a cock and 2 hens at Christmas, and 30 eggs at Easter. And he shall find a man to reap one day, or else pay 2d., and a man to lift the lord’s hay, or else give 1d.; and he shall plough for one day and hoe (circulabit) for one day, and carry the hay for one day if he has a cart, and if not he shall help the cocker (tassatorem) for the same time; and he shall make a quarter of malt yearly, and have daily (sic) for grinding and underwood for drying; and if he have a pig super eandem tournam he shall give for a pig of one year, as for a piglet of half a year, 1/2d.; and he shall do suit to the prioress’s court of the manor aforesaid every three weeks. 2a. land in a croft called ‘Bringclescroft,’ held of Sir Nicholas Burnel by service of 2s. 1d. yearly and suit to the court in Hacchesham. A tenement containing 10a. formerly belonging to John Hembeleye, held of the lord of Bretynghurst by service of rendering 5s. yearly and a goose at the manor of Bretynghurst. 9a. land and pasture in Retlynges Brodemede, held by fealty at the manor of Bretynghurst. 7a. land and 5a. 3r. meadow in a place called Sa …….., held of the earl of March by service of 6s. yearly at his manor of Westgrenewych. 2a. meadow in Rowemede, held of the said Nicholas Burnel by service of 12d. yearly. 2a. land and 1r. meadow in Wythebrok, held of Robert Lyttel; another rood of meadow in Sterte, held of the same; and 1 1/2a. land, parcel of the tenement Dovedale, which renders 9d. yearly, held of the same. The said John died without heir on 25 September in the year aforesaid.
	Writ of certiorari super causa capcionis, 19 October, 43 Edward III.
	Endorsed: The lands of the said John son of John were taken by the escheator into the king’s hand on information that he held them of the manor of Hacchesham, which was in the king’s hand. Afterwards it was found by an inquisition taken on a writ of diem clausit extremum that he held no lands of the king, but that he held of the prioress of Derteford and others, to which prioress the king granted the said manor to hold to her and her successors.

319.	PERNELL LATE THE WIFE OF JOHN BOULEWAS, or DE BOULEWAS, knight.

HEREFORD.	Inq. (indented) taken at Hereford, 24 September, 43 Edward III.
	Bremfeld. The manor (extent given), held jointly with John Boulewas, now deceased, by reason of a gift thereof made by the same John, with the king’s licence, to Thomas Stabbe, rector of the church of Borghwarton, and Hugh de Redyngges of Leomynstre, chaplain, who afterwards gave it to the said John and Pernell and the heirs of John. John de Boulewas, son and heir of the said John, with the king’s licence granted the reversion of the manor after Pernell’s death to Hugh de Monyton, John de Stratton, Thomas de Burghope, and Roger Partrich, to whom Pernell attorned. They with the king’s licence granted the said reversion to the said John the son and the heirs of his body, with remainder to John de Eylesford, knight, and Isabel, his wife, and their heirs. Pernell then attorned to John the son. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of keeping the king’s forest of Morf. The extent of the manor includes a wood of great timber called ‘Shortegrove.’ She held no other lands &c. in the county. She died on 10 August last. John the son is 30 years of age.

	He held the following in fee tail, to him and the heirs of his body:— Ayssh by Gosebek. The manor, held of Sir William de Ufford, the prior of Buttele, and the bishop of Ely, by service of half a mark yearly, except a messuage, 2 gardens and 20a. land which are held of the heir of Lionel duke of Clarence, a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service, as of the honor of Clare. Helmyngham. The manor, held of Thomas Sakevyll at fee-farm by service of 100s. yearly, and of Ralph de Bockyngg by service of 2s. yearly, except 30a. land which are held of the heir of Lionel duke of Clarence by knight’s service. Croffeld. The manor, held of Edmund de Thorp by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. He died on Saturday after the Purification last. John his son, aged 20 years on the feast of St. Dunstan last, is his heir.

	Whitewyk. The manor (extent given), held as parcel of the honor of Winchester of the king in chief, by what services the jurors know not. The extent includes a several pasture called [Stoksich], with a piece of fallow ground annexed, meadows called ‘Edonlandesmede,’ [‘Bothemmede’] and ‘Brokmede,’ plots of meadow called [‘Milnekerr’] and ‘Thornberksich,’ plots of pasture called ‘Halleheye’ and ‘Roweslade,’ a park called ‘Berdon,’ 2 plots of wood by Shepeshed, one called ‘Lutlehawe’ and the other ‘Ocle,’ two fish ponds, of which the fishery is worth this year, if the dams (capita) are broken, 66s. 8d., and pleas and perquisites of court, with a share of the court of Winchester. 	Wobourne. He held no lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick because he was outlawed in London on Monday before St. Edmund the King, 38 Edward III, at the suit of Robert de Thame, citizen of London. A messuage, 80a. land, 3a. meadow and 3a. wood in Wobourne descended to him after the death of John his father, who died on Wednesday the eve of St. Matthew, 41 Edward III, but these were seized into the king’s hand by virtue of a writ of the Common Bench directed to John de Olneye, late escheator, and are still in the king’s hand. The premises are held of Millicent de Encourt by homage and fealty. He died on Wednesday the eve of St. Bartholomew, 42 Edward III. Edmund his brother, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.
