51. WILLIAM ADRESHAM, or HADRESHAM.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said William, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 15 May, 40 Edward III.
BERKS. Inq. made at Abyndon, 1 June, 40 Edward III.
Suthmorton. 4l. 10s. rent, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
He died on the feast of St. Peter’s Chains, 35 Edward III. John his son, aged 5 years and more, is his heir.
The king has been in possession of the said rent since his death by the hands of the escheators.

52. WILLIAM DE AYKEVED, or AYKHEVED.
Writ, 16 April, 40 Edward III.
CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Wigton, 21 May, 40 Edward III.
Aykeheved, a hamlet of Wigton. 4 messuages and 80a. land, held in chief of the hospital of St. Nicholas by Carlisle by service of 40s. yearly.
Le Heighmore. 2 messuages and 15a. land, held in chief of Anthony de Lucy, as of the manor of Wigton, by service of 15s. 6d. yearly; and 6 cottages, 6a. land and 18a. meadow, held of the same in chief, as of the same manor, by service of 21s. 8d. and 1 1/2d. for cornage yearly.
Crofton. 6a. land called ‘Gilmartyn Riddyng,’ held in chief of the aforesaid house of St. Nicholas by service of 6d. yearly.
Rossuyn. A garden, held of the aforesaid Anthony, as of the manor of Wigton, by service of a rose yearly.
Carlisle. A garden, held of the king in chief in burgage by service of 2d. for housegavel.
Waverton. A messuage and la. land, held in chief of John de Waverton by service of a bunch of ginger.
The manor of Wigton was in the king’s hand when William died by reason of the death of Thomas de Lucy, father of Anthony.
He held no other lands &c. in the county or elsewhere.
He died on Monday, 16 March last. Margaret wife of Amand Mounceux, Thomas son of John de Irby, William Somre (?) and Robert de Stanlawe, all 30 years of age and more, are his kinsmen and heirs.

53. THOMAS BROK, or BROKE.
Writ, (fn. 1) 28 November, 40 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Great Donmowe, Monday after the Epiphany, 40 Edward II.
He held no lands &c. for two years and a half before the taking of this inquisition.
White Rothing. He held of the king in chief, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee, a messuage, 300a. land, 10a. meadow, 9a. pasture, 50a. wood and 70s. rent; but Bartholomew de Frestlyngg, citizen and corder of London, recovered the same against him by virtue of a writ and by pretext of a recognisance under the statute of Acton Burnel for 160l., and they were delivered to the said Bartholomew by the sheriff of Essex two years and more ago, to be held until the said debt should be levied. Thomas Brok, in Bartholomew’s seisin, released all his right in the premises to Bartholomew by a fine levied with the king’s licence.
Heir not known. Thomas Brok is still alive.

Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Alice who held of the abbey of Ramseye, lately void and in the king’s hand, by knight’s service, and as to who has been in possession of her lands since her death and received the issues. 27 January, 40 Edward III.
CAMBRIDGE. Inq. taken at Fordham, Friday after the Purification, 40 Edward III.
[Unspecified.] A messuage and 60a. land and meadow, held of the abbey of Rameseye, lately void and in the king’s hand, by knight’s service.
She held no other lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick.
She died on Tuesday after St. Augustine, 23 Edward III. Alice and Margaret, daughters of John Bartelott her son, aged respectively 26 years and 20 years and more, are her heirs.
John de Fensted and Maud his wife, mother of the aforesaid Alice and Margaret, were in possession of the premises from the time of the death until 12 August, 34 Edward III. Since then the king has been in possession.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Westminster, 5 November, 40 Edward III. (fn. 2)
Parish of St. Clement Danes. A messuage worth 13s. 4d. yearly, held for life by the courtesy of England after the death of Cecily his wife, daughter and heir of Thomas Barbur. It is held of the king in chief by service of rendering yearly 18d. at Michaelmas by the hands of the sheriff of Middlesex.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 25 September last. John Lessch, aged 26 years, as the jurors understand, is kinsman and heir of the said Cecily.

57. ROBERT BARDE of Osgotby.
Two writs, 28 April and 16 May, 40 Edward III.
YORK. Inq. taken at Westlutton, Saturday in Whitsun week, 40 Edward III.
He held nothing in fee of the king in chief as of the crown.
Osgotby. A messuage in ruins, 4 tofts and 20 bovates of land, held in fee tail of the king in chief, as of the honor of Aumale, which is in the king’s hand as the jurors understand, by knight’s service and by service of rendering 28s. yearly to the castle and honor of Pikeryng for fines of the king’s wapentake, and 6s. yearly to the duke of Lancaster; and the deceased had to do suit to the wapentake of Pikeryng annually, and to pay 4s. yearly to the master of St. Leonard’s.
Osgotby and Caiton. Six tofts and 9 bovates of land, held in form aforesaid of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Pikeryng, in socage, by service of 10s. yearly. Nicholas de Sutton and Margaret his wife were enfeoffed by the deceased, long before his death, of 4 1/2 of the said 9 bovates for their lives and in survivorship, and they are still alive.
Osgotby, Lebreston, Bryneston and Cayton. 11s. 6d. rent of free tenants, held in form aforesaid, which belong to the aforesaid lands held of the king as of the honor of Aumale.
Westlutton. At one time the deceased held this manor in fee of Ralph de Hastynges by knight’s service; but long before his death he gave it to Thomas Beaucole and John de Lymbergh, who in turn gave it to him and Margaret his wife, and his heirs. Margaret is still alive.
Westlutton, Estlutton, Farmanby and Kynthorp. Long before his death the deceased gave 6s. 8d. rent from a toft with croft and a bovate of land in Westlutton held by Adam Ailward for life, a bovate of land in Estlutton held by John de Lymbergh at will, 5s. rent from a bovate of land in Estlutton held in fee by Robert de Mapelton, 4 tofts, 3 bovates of land and 6a. meadow in Farmanby in Pikerynglith held by divers tenants at will, and a bovate of land in Kynthorp, to Nicholas de Sutton and Margaret his wife, mother of the deceased, for their lives and in survivorship.
All the above, except the messuage, 4 tofts, 20 bovates and 11s. 6d. rent, are held of divers lords by divers services, and not of the king in chief.
The deceased held no other lands &c.
He died on Thursday after the close of Easter, 40 Edward III. William his son, aged 6 years and more, is heir of the said Robert and Margaret.

58. RICHARD SON OF WILLIAM BESEVILL.
Writ, 1 January, 40 Edward III.
NORTHAMPTON. Inq. (indented) taken at Coton by Norhampton, 2 April, 41 Edward III.
Coton by Norhampton. Two-thirds of a messuage and garden, with 40a. land lying fallow, 12a. 3r. meadow, and 18s. 1 1/2d. rents of free tenants, held in fee and in reversion.
Hardingesthorn. Two-thirds of a messuage, of a dovecote, and of 1 1/2a. meadow, whereof Robert Gildesburgh and Elizabeth his wife hold the third part for her life by way of dower, similarly held.
The premises are charged with 49s. 8 1/2d. yearly to be paid at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff, by a writ patent of the king in which it is contained that the king lately committed the custody of the premises to Thomas Mallesores, deceased, during the minority of the said Richard Besevill, at the yearly farm aforesaid.
They are held of the earl of Pembroke, who is likewise a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service.
Richard died on Sunday the eve of the Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 40 Edward III. Elizabeth, now the wife of William Lombe, of full age, is his kinswoman and heir.

59. MAUD LATE THE WIFE OF JOHN BUSTARD.
Writ, 15 April, 40 Edward III.
YORK. Inq. taken at York, Saturday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 40 Edward III.
Bisshopthorp, called Thorp Andree. Eight tofts and two-thirds of two tofts, and 10 bovates of land, held jointly with John, sometime her husband, to them and the heirs of their bodies, of the king in chief by fealty and service of rendering two-thirds of 4 marks yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff; with remainder to the right heirs of the said John.
Bustardhall. Tenements so called, held in form aforesaid of John de Thornton by fealty and service of 7s. yearly.
Middelthorp. Tenements held in form aforesaid of the abbot of Whiteby by service of 13s. 4d. yearly.
She held no other lands &c.
She died on Thursday before the Purification last. Maud Bustard, aged 24 years, married to John Deyvill, and Margaret her sister, aged 22 years, married to John de Clifton, daughters of John de Friston and Joan his wife, deceased, daughter of the deceased Maud wife of John Bustard, are the heirs of the said Maud and John in the entail aforesaid. Joan who was the wife of John de Friston was mother of the said Maud and Margaret, and Maud wife of John Bustard was their grandmother (amita).

60. ALINA LATE THE WIFE OF EDWARD BURNEL.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Alina, and who has been in possession of her lands since her death and received the issues. 20 February, 40 Edward III.
SALOP. Inq. taken at Bruggenorth, 3 December, 40 Edward III.
Conedovere. The manor, held of the king in chief for life, with divers other lands in the county held of divers lords. After her death they were taken into the king’s hand under a writ of diem clausit extremum, and an extent was made and returned into Chancery. Afterwards, by virtue of a fine levied in the king’s court with the king’s licence, they were delivered by the king’s writ to Nicholas Burnel, knight, to hold to him and his heirs.
Remesleye. A toft and a carucate of land, held for life by way of dower, of the inheritance of Edward Burnel, late her husband, of Roger le Power, lord of Remesleye, by service of rendering a pair of gloves yearly at Easter.
She died on 18 June, 37 Edward III. The reversion of the premises in Remesleye belongs to John Lovel, knight, aged 24 years and more, as next heir of the said Edward Burnel.
William Moryce has been in possession of the premises since her death, title not known.
Writ de feodis &c., 12 May, 41 Edward III.
SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Welles, 14 November, 41 Edward III.
Lokeston. The advowson of the church, held for life by way of dower, of the inheritance of John son and heir of John Lovel.
She held no other knights’ fees or advowsons in the county.

61. WILLIAM BARWE.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said William, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 6 July, 40 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Pretewell, Monday before St. Matthias, 41 Edward III.
Great Sutton. 60a. marsh called ‘Bradewerdemersch,’ held in fee simple in service of the lady Philippa, queen of England, as of the honor of Reylegh, by knight’s service. This marsh Thomas de Septem Fontibus then held of the deceased by homage and service of 1lb. pepper yearly.
Shopelonde and Little [Wa]keringge. 60a. marsh called ‘Shelwerde’ and ‘Barnflet,’ held as to one moiety of Alice Farman by service of 10s. yearly, and as to the other moiety of Edmund Fych Simond, knight, by service of 100s. 1d. yearly.
Barwe. The manor, held by the said William jointly with Joan his wife, now deceased, to them and the heirs of William, by gift of Peter de Howe, vicar of the church of Shopelond, and Walter le Leche of Crishal, chaplain. William and Joan held it of Walter Fith Hounfrey, knight, by knight’s service. Walter had the custody of the manor and the marriage of William by reason of William’s minority after the death of Richard his father, who held the manor of Walter by knight’s service; and sold the said custody and marriage to Bartholomew de Septem Fontibus and Alice his wife by a deed dated at London, 30 Edward I.
William died on 8 February, 9 Edward III. James de Barwe, son of James de Barwe his son, aged 11 1/2 years, is his heir.
Joan late the wife of William received the rent of pepper by the hands of those who held the marsh in Great Sutton from the time of William’s death until Michaelmas, 34 Edward III, since when the king has received it because the honor of Reylegh has been in the king’s hand from that time until now. James, son of the said William, and the aforesaid Joan, were in possession of the marsh called ‘Shelwerde’ and ‘Barnflet’ from the time of the death of William until the feast of St. Hilary, 39 Edward III, when Joan died. Joan was in possession of the manor of Barwe from the time of the death until the same feast of St. Hilary, since when William de Maldon has been in possession, by what title the jurors know not.

62. KATHARINE DAUGHTER OF ROBERT GOWER.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Katharine, and who has been in possession of her lands since her death and received the issues. 25 June, 40 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Neuport, Friday before St. Peter’s Chains, 40 Edward III.
Radwintir. A moiety of 4l. yearly rent, held as belonging to the manor of Kentewellehalle, co. Suffolk, of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Immediately after her death, Joan her sister and heir entered and took possession of the said moiety, and received the profits for 15 days. Then David de Strabolgi, earl of Athol, entered and took the profits until 6 June, 38 Edward III, by what title the jurors know not. Since then the escheator, Roger de Wolferston, has been in possession and has accounted at the Exchequer.
Katharine died about Christmas, 32 Edward III. Joan her sister, aged 23 years and more, wife of William Neve of Wetyngge, is her heir.

HERTFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Much Hadham, Wednesday after the Purification, 41 Edward III.
Pelham Furneux. The manor, of which the chief messuage, 610a. arable, 27a. meadow, 27a. pasture, a park, a wood containing 34a., 7l. rent and 300 works are held of the bishop of London by service of one knight’s fee and 7s. 6d. yearly for ward of Storteford castle; 105a. arable and 5a. 1r. meadow are held of the lady of Bedeford by service of 1lb. cummin and 13s. 4d. yearly; 15a. pasture are held of Thomas de Grey by service of 6d. yearly; 6a. arable are held of the hall of Patemere by service of 9d. yearly; 7a. land are held of Roger Hotot by service of 2s. 1d. yearly; and 3a. land are held of the prior of Biggingg by service of 7d. yearly.
Hiderisham. The manor, of which the chief messuage, 320a. arable, 2 1/2a. meadow, 12 1/2a. pasture, 30a. wood and 30s. rent are held of the bishop of London by service of 6s. 4d. yearly for ward of Storteford castle and half a knight’s fee; and 3a. land are held of the hall of Patemere by service of 1lb. cummin yearly.
These two manors the deceased held jointly with Hugh her husband, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by gift of Robert de Morle, knight, John Quenyld and others.
The manor of Hiderisham is charged with 4l. yearly for certain chaplains.
She died on Sunday after the Circumcision last. William, son of the said Hugh and Alesia, aged 14 years and more, is their heir.
ESSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Manitre, Thursday after the Conversion of St. Paul, 41 Edward III.
Little Benteleye. The manor, held of the bishop of London by homage and service of 4s. yearly for ward of Storteford castle.
Great Bromleye. 10a. land and 10a. wood called ‘Hendebody,’ held of the heirs of John le Cook by service of a clove.
Tendringg. The manor called ‘Newehall,’ held of the heirs of Thomas Stoddeye by service of a third part of a knight’s fee and a pair of gilt spurs worth 6d.; 60a. land, late of Peter atte Hill, held of the prior of St. Botolph by service of 15s. yearly; and 20a. land called ‘Wyldes,’ held of John Sutton, knight, by homage and service of 20d. yearly.
Wykes. The manor called ‘Hamstall,’ held of the same John de Sutton by homage and service of 1lb. cummin yearly.
All the above she held jointly with Hugh her husband, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by gift of Robert de Morle, knight, John Quenyld and others.

64. EDWARD HILLARY, knight.
Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands and heir of the said Edward, and who has been in possession of his lands since his death and received the issues. 12 February, 40 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Inq. taken at Horncastre, Saturday after St. Gregory, 40 Edward III.
Scrivelby. 2a. land, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died about the feast of Holy Trinity, 36 Edward III. John his son, aged 12 years and more, is his heir, and is in the wardship of William de Gray of Sandiacre, knight, for what reason the jurors know not, and he should be in the wardship of the king by reason of the aforesaid two acres. He will also be heir of the said William de Gray, if he outlive him, in respect of 200 marks yearly of land and rent, by virtue of an entail, as kinsman and heir of the said William, as well as being heir of Edward his father in divers counties to the value of 20 marks a year.
John Dymmok, knight, has had possession of the said 2a. since Edward’s death, by what title or how the jurors know not.

SALOP. Inq. taken at Neuport, 24 February, 40 Edward III.
Peppelowe. A messuage, a garden, a carucate of land and 40s. rent, held for her life of the king in chief by service of rendering 5s. yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff, being jointly enfeoffed thereof with Thomas de Hodenet, formerly her husband, by gift of William de Hull, with the king’s licence.
She held no other lands &c. in the county.
She died on 25 November last. Thomas, her son by Thomas de Hodenet, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

DORSET. Inq. (indented) taken at Blaneford, Monday after St. George, 40 Edward III.
Tarente Keynes. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent mentions two ‘hammes’ containing 2a. meadow, 12a. meadow in la Mersch, and a pasture of 300a. several except that in the open time the abbess of Tarente has common with 32 oxen and the rector of the church of Tarente Keynes with 6 oxen.
Combe Keynes. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes a pasture called ‘Rouwode.’
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on Monday before St. Gregory last. John his son, aged 9 weeks, is his heir.

He held no other lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick.
He died on 1 March, 40 Edward III. John de Kaynes, his son, aged a month and two days on the day his father died, is his heir.
Writ, 8 April, 40 Edward III.
NORTHAMPTON. Inq. (indented) taken at Daventre, Friday after St. George, 40 Edward III.
Dodford. The manor (extent given), held of John duke of Lancaster by service of four knights’ fees and a moiety of a fee, and the service of rendering to the duke 26s. 8d. yearly in equal portions on the morrow of ‘hokeday’ and the morrow of Martinmas, on which days the duke’s steward will come to Dodeford and hold the views of frankpledge of the heir of John de Kaynes, lately lord there, without taking anything else for his coming. The extent is more full and descriptive than usual, and includes an enclosed park of 30a. called ‘Dodfordpark’ and details of services of tenants.
The deceased died on Monday in the second week of Lent last. John de Kaynes, his son who was six weeks old on the day of his father’s death, is his heir.

Reilegh. A messuage, 60a. land and 6a. wood, held for life jointly with John son of John de Belhous, now deceased, by gift of Gervase de Wilford and William Gilmyn to them and the heirs of the body of the said John, of the king in chief, as of the honor of Reilegh, by service of finding a bailiff to do all the executions of the court of Reilegh.
40a. land, 8a. meadow, 3a. wood and 5s. 6 1/2d. rent, held for life in form aforesaid of the king in chief, as of the said honor, by service of a sixteenth part of a knight’s fee and by doing suit to the hundred of Rocheford every three weeks.
A messuage, 180a. land, 8a. meadow and 15s. 9 1/2d. rent, held for life in form aforesaid of the king in chief, as of the same honor, by service of 3d. for scutage when a scutage happens throughout England.
30a. land, held for life in form aforesaid of the abbot of Colchester and Robert de Teye by service of 6s. 4d. yearly and by doing suit to the aforesaid hundred as above.
He died on Monday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last. Thomas son of the aforesaid John de Belhous is his heir, and was 19 years of age at the feast of St. Valentine last.

Wokyng. Tenements in the parish called ‘Cranstok’ (extent given), held of Edward, prince of Wales, in right of Joan his wife, as of his manor of Purebrigh, by service of rendering at his manor of Purebrigh 2s. and 1lb. pepper at Michaelmas, and by doing suit to his court every three weeks.
He held no other lands &c. in the county.
He died on 4 September, 38 Edward III. Robert Latimer his son, aged 6 years and more and in the king’s wardship, as the jurors understand, is his heir.
William Latimer, his brother, has been in possession of the premises since his death, by what title the jurors know not.
