C. Edw. III. File 236. (1.)
2. JAMES ANDREU, citizen of London.
Writ of precipimus, 28 November, 48 Edward III.
LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 9 December, 48 Edward III.
He died on 30 September last, seised of:—
Parish of All Hallows the Less. 3 messuages and 2 shops in Tamysstrete, held of the king in chief in free burgage, service not known. They are charged with 10 marks yearly to the said church (sic) to maintain a chantry, 10s. yearly to the college of St. Laurence Poulteneye, and 40s. yearly quit rent to the hospital of St. Bartholomew in Smythfeld. John Dony now holds them, by what title the jurors know not, and has taken the profits since James’s death. Katharine, John’s wife, aged 19 years or thereabouts, is James’s next heir.
Cordewanerstrete. A small dwelling with a shop annexed, situate near Chepe, held of the king in chief as above, service not known. They are charged with a quit rent of 16s. to the dean and chapter of St. Paul’s. Henry P . . stede [has had possession of them] and taken the [profits] since James’s death.
Parishes of St. Olave, Old Jewry, and St. Laurence Jewry. A great messuage with a shop, 3 small dwellings with 3 shops, and 5 other shops with solars built over, held of the king in free burgage by service of 2d. yearly. The said James and a certain John Vyne held these jointly by feoffment of Henry Frowyk, John Dony, and Roger Canon, on the express condition that they should re-enfeoff thereof the said John Dony and Katharine his wife, daughter of the said James, to hold to them and their heirs and assigns. Afterwards John Vyne by his writing released his right to James and his heirs, and James died seised of such estate without making any such re-enfeoffment. If they were fully built as they were begun, they would be worth 16l. yearly; but at present they are of no value because they are not built. John Dony now holds them, by what title the jurors know not, but has received no profits for the above reason.
Parishes of St. Mary-le-Bow and Aldermaricherche. 2 messuages and 3 shops in Cordewanerstrete. These he had for life by demise of William de Weston and Margery his wife, formerly the wife of Robert de Upton, at a yearly rent of 10l. 16s. 8d. payable to Margery and her heirs and assigns, with reversion to the said Margery and her heirs. Afterwards the said Margery granted her estate in the rent and reversion to the king, who granted them to William de Thorp, knight, and William Peek for their lives, with remainder to the prioress and sisters of the house of the order of Preachers which he had founded at Derteford. James thereupon attorned to the king, and to the said William and William. William and William are dead, so that the rent and reversion fell to the said prioress and sisters, who by their charter dated 6 April, 45 Edward III, surrendered them to the king, whereupon James attorned to the king in the presence of Michael Skyllyng, Nicholas Heryng and other the king’s attorneys. Afterwards, the rent &c. being thus in the king’s hand and the prioress and convent having no estate therein, James relinquished the estate which he had by grant of the said Margery, and took a new one of the said prioress and convent, to himself and Maud his wife for their lives, with remainder to the heirs and assigns of the survivor, by a writing dated Monday the feast of the Conception, 45 Edward III, as appears by indentures whereof one part remained in the possession of James, sealed with a seal inscribed ‘The seal of the business (causarum) of the monastery of Derteford’; but whether that seal was then the common seal of the monastery the jurors know not. After this grant the king re-enfeoffed the said prioress and convent of the said rent and reversion by his charter dated 20 July, 46 Edward III. John Vyne now has possession of the said messuage &c., by what title the jurors know not, and has taken the profits since James’s death. They are charged with payments of 29 1/2d. yearly (payable to the sheriffs of London on Palm Sunday) to the king, of whom they are held in chief by that service, 4l. to the church of Lambeheth to maintain a chantry there, and 30s. to the prior and convent of Merton.

GLOUCESTER. Inq. taken at Neweport, 31 May, 48 Edward III.
The following came to the king’s hand by the death of the said Thomas de Bradeston, and is in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of the said Thomas son of Robert his kinsman and heir:—
Wynterbourn. The manor (extent given), held of John Fitz Estevene by knight’s service. The extent includes a customary rent called ‘larderselver.’ Robert Mordak, parson of the church of Wynterbourn, and Robert Coyne, parson of the church of Somerford Mauduyt, granted the said manor and the advowson of the church thereof to Thomas de Bradeston and Agnes his wife and the heirs male of their bodies, with successive remainders to Robert de Bradeston and the heirs male of his body and to John de Bradeston and the heirs male of his body, by a fine levied in the king’s court. The said Thomas and Agnes are dead without heir male &c., and Thomas son of Robert de Bradeston is dead without heir male; so the manor and advowson ought to remain to Edmund de Bradeston, son and heir of John de Bradeston, and his heirs, according to the form of the said fine.
Thomas son of Robert died on Tuesday before St. Dunstan last. Elizabeth his daughter, aged 8 months, is his next heir in blood, though not to the manor.
