SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Aulton, 26 May, 49 Edward III.
Brayton (sic). The manor, held of the king in chief by grand serjeanty.
Bere. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
After the death of Laurence they were seized into the king’s hand by John de Estbury, late escheator, who had possession of them by reason of his office until 30 May, 36 Edward III, when the king by his letters patent committed the custody of all the lands &c. late of the said Laurence until the lawful age of his heir to Thomas de More, who had possession of the said manors until his death about All Saints last.
The following lands &c. were held by the said Laurence by gift of Master John Lecche to him and Alice his wife, who died in his lifetime, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Alice. On his death they were not seized into the king’s hand, but the said Thomas de More had possession of them by colour of the said commitment until his own death, since when Thomas Whele has had possession of them, to wit:—
Bentele. A messuage, a carucate of land, 2a. meadow, 4a. wood and 16s. 10d. rent, held of the bishop of Winchester, service not known.
Bynstede. 5a. meadow and 5s. 6d. rent, held of the countess of Kent, as of the manor of Aulton, service not known.
Badele in the parish of Crundall. A moiety of a toft, a moiety of a carucate of land, 2a. wood and 24s. 10d. rent, held of the prior of St. Swithun’s, Winchester, service not known.
Incolviles in the parish of Crundale. A moiety of a toft, a moiety of a carucate of land, and 1a. wood, held of John Giffard, lord of Ichell, service not known.
He died on 6 October, 35 Edward III. John, son of John de Pageham his son, aged 14 years and more, is next heir of his body by the said Alice.

188. GRIMBALD PAUNCEFOT, knight.

HEREFORD. Inq. (indented) taken at Bromyerd, 4 January, 49 Edward III.
Couwarne. The manor (extent given), held of the heir of Humphrey de Bohoun, earl of Hereford, a minor in the king’s wardship, as of the honor of Brecon, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. Emery Pauncefot was formerly seised thereof, and gave it, with the exception of 40s. rent, to Geoffrey de Stoke and Adam Esegar, parson of the church of Hasfeld; and afterwards, by a fine levied in the king’s court, he acknowledged it to be the right of Geoffrey, and Geoffrey and Adam regranted it to him for life, with successive remainders to Grimbald Pauncefot, knight, now deceased, and Ellen, daughter of Alan de Charleton, knight, and the heirs of their bodies, to the heirs of the body of the said Grimbald, to Hugh brother of Grimbald, and the heirs of his body, and to the right heirs of the said Emery. Emery died in 8 Edward III, and Grimbald and Ellen entered on the manor. Ellen died without issue by Grimbald. Afterwards the said Grimbald granted the rent above excepted to John Walden, chaplain, for life, and the tenants attorned accordingly. Afterwards he granted the reversion of the rent to Richard Grene of Dymmok, chaplain, and Richard Mylward, rector of the church of Harsfeld, their heirs and assigns, and John Walden and the other tenants attorned accordingly. Richard Grene and Richard Milward granted the said reversion to Hugh Pauncefot and Katharine his wife, and the heirs of the body of Hugh, with successive remainders to John Calnhull and the heirs of his body, to Richard Frene and the heirs of his body, and to the said Grimbald and his heirs.
Grimbald died on 20 November, 49 Edward III; and Hugh his brother, named in the fine aforesaid, aged 40 years and more, John Walden, and the said Hugh and Katharine his wife, grantees of the reversion of the rent, are still living. Hugh de Carreu, aged 40 years and more, is the next heir of Grimbald; and the said Hugh brother of Grimbald is the next heir of Emery.

Sountynge and Iwhurst by Hanefeld. The manors, held jointly with Katharine his wife, who survives, to them and his heirs, by grant of Roger Leche, rector of the church of Shyremanbury, and Robert Cook, vicar of the church of Ifeld. The manors are held of the lord de Moubray, as of the honor of Brembre, by knight’s service.
Stenyngge and Brembre. A messuage and 50a. land, held jointly, as above, by grant of John Pyper and Joan his wife, rendering the true value thereof during their life. The premises are held of the lord of Ewelme by service of 8s. yearly and fealty.
La Potte. A toft and 60a. land so called, held jointly, as above, by grant of John Bonard and Maud his wife. The premises are held of the lord de Moubray, as parcel of the manor of Sountyngge, by knight’s service.
Hallond in Hanefeld. A toft, 100a. land and 3a. meadow, held in demesne as of fee of the bishop of Chichester by knight’s service.
He died on 3 February last. Edmund Fitz Herbert, knight, aged 30 years and more, and John Brokes, aged 23 years and more, are his kinsmen and heirs, Edmund being son of Reynold son of Lucy his sister, and John being son of Margaret daughter of Alesia his other sister.
SUSSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Seford, 10 March, 49 Edward III.
Blachyngton by Sefford. Two-thirds of the manor (extent given), held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Laigle, by service of one knight’s fee. The extent includes the advowson of the church.

SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Craule, 1 August, 49 Edward III.
Chyntynge. A messuage and 80a. arable, held of the king in chief by service of finding the cost of a third part of a hobelar in the king’s army in the king’s war in Scotland. Long before his death he granted the same to John Lyntot, his servant, for a term of 50 years at a yearly rent of 40s.
Ponyngg, Pengeden, Great Perchyng, Hangelton, Slagham, Crawle and Twynem. The manors, held of the earl of Arundel, as of his honor of Lewes.
Waldern. The manor, held of Thomas de Sakvyll by knight’s service.
Ifeld. 6 marks rent, held of the lord de Moumbray by knight’s service, as of his castle of Brembre.
Little Perchyng. The manor, held of Robert de Bayvill by knight’s service.
Long before his death he divested himself of the last four items in favour of Arnold Savage and William de Elyngton, knights, John Newmarche, William Tauke, Roger Dalyngregg, Hugh Waterton and John Baker, chaplain, to hold for their lives and the life of Blanche his wife.
He died on 25 June last. Richard de Ponyngg, his brother, aged 16 years and more, is his heir.
KENT. Inq. taken at Osprenge, Saturday after St. Bartholomew, 49 Edward III.
Terlyngham and Newenton Bertram. The manors (extents given), with the advowson of the church of Hastynglegh and a moiety of the hundred of Fulkstane, except a moiety of a windmill, of a farm of 7 quarters 4 bushels of palm-barley, and of rents of 32l. 19s. 11 3/4d., 88 hens and 300 eggs in the manor of Therlyngham, and a moiety of rents of 14l. 16s. 8 3/4d., 60 hens and 300 eggs in Newenton Bertram, which windmill, farm and rents are of gavelkind tenure and so were divided between him and Richard de Ponynges, his brother, who survives, after the death of Michael de Ponynges, their father. The entire manors are held of the king by service of maintaining a moiety of a chapel and hall in Dover castle whenever they need repair, rendering to the king 2s. 6d. at the end of every 27 weeks for great ward of the said castle, and 15d. at the end of every 28 weeks for little ward of the same, and 10s. for sheriff’s aid for farm of the moiety of the hundred of Folkstan. The extent of the manor of Therlyngham includes a several pasture called ‘Northcroft.’ The pleas &c. of the court of Therlyngham and the moiety of the hundred of Folkstane are worth 20s. yearly. Part of the aforesaid moiety of the rent of 14l. 16s. 8 3/4d. in Newenton Bertram is payable by tenants in Donemersh and Newenton.
Westwode. The manor (extent given), except a moiety of 100a. arable, of 100a. pasture, of 7a. salt meadow, and of 13l. 4s. rent, which arable, pasture, meadow and rent are of gavelkind tenure and so were divided as above. The manor is held of the king by service of rendering 3s. 4d. at Dover castle at the end of every 24 weeks. The extent includes a rent from tenants of Newecourt. The 100a. arable are held of the abbot of Faveresham by service of rendering 63s. 7 1/4d. yearly; and the 100a. pasture and 7a. salt meadow are held severally of the archbishop of Canterbury, the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, Sir Nicholas Loveyne, knight, and William de Makenhad, by service of rendering to them 20s. 6 1/4d. yearly, but in what proportions the jurors know not.
Estwell. The manor (extent given), with the advowson of the church, except a moiety of 63a. land, of 11a. meadow, and of rents of 4l. 13s. 6d., 59 hens and 200 eggs, which land, meadow and rents are of gavelkind tenure and so were divided as above. The entire manor is held of the king by service of maintaining a certain house in Dover castle when it needs repair, and rendering to the king at the said castle 20s. yearly on 27 April. He also held 52a. pasture, held of the king by service of leading two greyhounds in a leash so long as a pair of shoes worth 2 1/2d. will last in the business of leading them; 40a. land in the field called ‘Otirplayesfeld,’ held of Sir William de Say by a twenty-first part of a knight’s fee; 7a. meadow, held of the abbot of Battle by service of rendering 12d. yearly at his manor of Wy; 4a. meadow, held of the abbot of St. Augustine’s, Canterbury, by service of rendering 2s. 6d. yearly; and 5 marks yearly rent receivable from the manor of Asshmersfeld.
Hosmynden. The manor (extent given), held of William le Vaus, as of his manor of Chicsell, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. Long before his death he divested himself thereof in favour of Arnold Savage, William Tauk and William de Elyngton, knights, John Newmarche, Roger Dalingregge, Hugh Waterton and John Baker, chaplain, for the life of Blanche his wife, who survives, reserving the reversion to himself and his heirs.

Letter from the king of Castile and Leon, duke of Lancaster, to Sir John Knyvet, chancellor, praying him to receive in the Chancery William Bateman and Thomas Blast, whom the lady de Ponynges has appointed in the duke’s presence as her general attorneys to sue for her dower and do all her other business. Writ to the escheator in Suffolk,—in pursuance of a petition from John de Worthe, knight, and Blanche, his wife, praying the king to order that assignment be made to them of Blanche’s reasonable dower of the manor of Wrantham called la Northall,’ seeing that Thomas de Ponynges, formerly her husband, was seised thereof in his demesne as of fee long after he married her, and afterwards granted it for life to William de Elyngton, knight, with reversion to himself and his heirs, and that after the death of the said William it came to the king’s hands by reason of the minority of the heir of the said Thomas, and is still in the king’s hand,—to enquire whether the manor was so held by Thomas, what estate the said William had therein, whether the manor came to the king’s hand as above, and of whom and by what service it is held. 16 February, 1 Richard II.

HERTFORD. Inq. taken at St. Albans, Saturday, the Nativity of St. Mary, 49 Edward III.
Ayete Laurence. The manor (extent given), held of the earl of Hereford by service of a sparrowhawk yearly, one suit to the earl’s court of Blaunchapelton, and one suit to his court of the honor of [Hert]ford. The extent includes 10s. rent of tenants in co. Bedford, whereof 4s. is repayable to the abbot of Westminster, and a fair on St. Laurence’s day.
Sandrugg. A hide containing 260a. untilled land, called ‘Paselewhid,’ held of the abbot of St. Albans by service of 3s. 4d. yearly to his manor of Sandrugg and 6d. to his view of frankpledge there, and by suit to the hundred and the abbot’s court under the ash-tree every three weeks.
He died on Thursday before St. Peter’s Chains last. Heir as above.

Wadele and Wykyngesham. The manor, held in fee tail of the king in chief by fealty only, by gift and feoffment of William de Wykham and others made to him and the heirs of his body without the king’s licence, with remainder to the king and his heirs.

Orewell. The manor (extent given), held of the honor of Gloucester by knight’s service; and a messuage and 30a. land and meadow called ‘Wattekyns,’ with 31s. 6d. rent of free tenants thereto belonging, held of the heirs of Henry de Bokesworth by knight’s service and service of a pair of gloves yearly. During his lifetime he seized into his hands 20a. land of the land of Warin de Bassyngbourne, knight, after the death of the said Warin, because they were held of the said manor, and had possession of them until his own death. The premises are worth 35l. 17s. 6d. yearly, of which sum Thomas Brayls received 20 marks yearly, and Gylowe, Richard’s servant, 60s. yearly, by gift of the said Richard; but the jurors know of no writing granting these sums.

He died on Monday after Michaelmas last without heir of his body. The reversion belongs to the king because William de Wykham, archdeacon of Lincoln, John de Estbury and Thomas Temese gave the manor to Richard de Pembrugge, Henry’s father, and the heirs of his body, with remainder to the king and his heirs, and the said Richard left no lawful issue except the said Henry. Heirs as last above.

Bernewelle. The manor, held for life by demise and feoffment of Henry Pykerell, chaplain, made with the king’s licence to her and the said John and the heirs of the latter. It is held of the king in chief by knight’s service. The extent includes a garden called ‘Newegardyn.’
She died on Monday before the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last. The reversion of a moiety of the manor belongs to Richard Stury, knight, and his heirs, by grant of John Dyn of Dounom, one of the heirs of John de Ravenesholm, to wit, son of Christiana daughter of Margery sister of William father of the said John; and the said Margaret attorned to Richard. This grant was made by a fine levied in the king’s court, and with the king’s licence, as the jurors understand. The reversion of the other moiety descended to John Dounome, aged 40 years and more, the other heir of John de Ravenesholm, to wit, son of Cecily sister of William father of the said John.

Athelyngton. A third part of the manor, held in his demesne as of fee, and two-thirds of the manor, held jointly with Alesia his wife, who survives, by grant of Maurice de Brun, the elder, Maurice de Brun, the younger, and Gilbert de Bradegate, chaplain, with the king’s licence. The manor is held of the king in chief by service of petty serjeanty, to wit, by serving the king with a cup of drink at Christmas.
Kyngeston Russell. A third part of the manor, held in his demesne as of fee, and two-thirds of the manor, with the advowson of the chapel of the manor, held jointly with Alesia his wife by grant as above. The manor is held of the king in chief by the service aforesaid.
He died on Tuesday after St. Scholastica, 49 Edward III. Maurice his son, aged 19 years at the feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary last, is his heir.

Radewynter. The manor (extent given), held of the earl of Hereford by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee and two suits to the manor of Blaunchapelton.
Great Sampford. A toft, 40a. arable, 10a. meadow, 3a. pasture, and 10 marks rent of assise of free tenants, held of the lord Fitz Wauter by service of 37s. yearly and payment of 8s. yearly at the manor of Great Sampford.
Assheldham. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Reylegh, by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee.
All held by gift of Robert Lambourne, rector of Wymbissh, Ralph Bullewyk, vicar of Fynchyngfeld, Reynold Berners, parson of Depeden, and William Bloy, rector of Qwenden, to her and the said John her husband and the heirs of their bodies.
She died on Sunday after St. Bartholomew last, whereupon the premises descended to John le Roos, then aged 13 years and more, son of John le Roos her son by the said John, her husband, as her heir. He survived her two weeks and died without heir of his body, whereupon the premises descended to Ellen wife of Geoffrey Brokhole, his aunt, to wit, daughter of the said John and Alesia. The said Ellen is 31 years of age and more, and has several sons and daughters by the said Geoffrey.

She died on 10 July, 45 Edward III. Isabel her daughter, aged 21 years, whom Robert Aleyn has taken to wife, is her next heir. Ever since her death the premises have been in the hands of the king, who has received the profits by the hands of the escheator.

199. THOMAS DE SKELTON.
Writ of precipimus, 9 February, 49 Edward III.
CUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at Wygton, 19 September, 49 Edward III.
Skelton. 6 messuages, 60a. land and 4a. meadow, held for life by grant of Richard son of Walter de Kirkebryd, the younger, of the king in chief by homage and fealty, and by service of paying 4d. yearly at the Exchequer of Carlisle for cornage, and rendering 18d. yearly for puture of the foresters of Ing[el]wode, and 12d. yearly for puture of the king’s bailiff of Cumberland ward.
The escheators for the time being have taken the issues ever since 22 May, 31 Edward III, when William de Nessefeld, escheator, seized the premises into the king’s hand on account of the above alienation; and they have answered therefor at the Exchequer.
Thomas died on the morrow of the Purification, 40 Edward III. Since his death the premises belong to Richard de Kirkebryd, aged 26 years and more, son of the aforesaid Richard, who is deceased. Clement de Skelton, aged 30 years and more, is the son of Thomas and his next heir in blood.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. taken ex officio at Ikelynton in the fifth week of Lent (no day mentioned), 49 Edward III.
Hynxton. The manor, held for life of the king in chief by knight’s service.
She died on the eve of the Annunciation, 48 Edward III; and immediately after her death William de Clopton, the elder, knight, entered thereon without writ or process of court, for which trespass the escheator seized it into the king’s hand.
Endorsement: The escheator acknowledged in Chancery that he so seized it.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. taken at Linton, Tuesday after St. Thomas the Apostle, 49 Edward III.
Hinxton. The manor, held as above, jointly with the said John her husband, deceased, to them and his heirs.
Date of death as above. Juliana Talmage, daughter of the said John and Alice, was their next heir. In her mother’s lifetime she granted the reversion after her mother’s death to William de Clopton, the elder, and John Cavendissh, knights, Robert de Kedington, Geoffrey Hundene, and John parson of Hauksted, and their heirs, without the king’s licence. Afterwards, the king pardoned the said trespass, and granted that the said grantees might enter the manor after the death of Alice. After her death the said William de Clopton and John parson of Hauksted entered, and John Cavendissh, Robert de Kedington and Geoffrey Hundene, without the king’s licence, released to them all their right therein, and they have had possession of the manor and taken the profits thereof ever since.

201. RICHARD DE SALTEBY of Grantham.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Ancastre, Tuesday in Easter week, 49 Edward III, in the presence of Robert Arnald of Swafeld and John de Wyllughby of Ingoldesby, appointed by the king by writ of privy seal to be present with the escheator for certain causes and to give information in the king’s behalf.
Herierdeby. A messuage and a carucate of land, held of the king in socage, as of the ancient socage of Grantham, by fealty and one attendance at the court of Grantham, and not by knight’s service. He acquired them from Robert de Whitewell with the king’s licence.
Grantham. A messuage, held of Edmund, earl of Cambridge, by one attendance yearly at the earl’s court at Grantham.
He died on Thursday after St. James the Apostle, 43 Edward III. Thomas his son, aged 9 years and more, is his heir. Adam de Eyleston, as guardian of the heir, has taken the profits ever since the death of Richard.
Richard, being of good and sound memory, gave all his other lands &c. in the county, together with all his goods, to Sir John de Bokyngham, now bishop of Lincoln, Sir John Sharp, parson of Somerby, Sir Geoffrey, vicar of Grantham, and Adam de Eyleston, their heirs and assigns, without dispute or fraud.

Tracy. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of finding a man with a horse, a sack and a skewer (cuvill’) to carry the king’s wooden vessels with the king when he goes with his army by reason of war in Wales, for 40 days at the king’s costs of food and drink for man and horse. Hugh Tracy, chaplain, receives therefrom for life 10l. yearly and 40s. yearly for his robe or a robe of that value.
Newenton by Reynham. 7a. land, held in gavelkind of the king’s manor of Milton by service of rendering to the said manor 4s. 1d. yearly.
Bobbyngg. The manor.
Newenton, Stokbery and Hertlepe. A messuage, 120a. land and 10a. wood.
Long before his death he divested himself of the last two items in favour of Robert Paule, knight, John Barler, Henry Wylly, William Colyer and Hugh ……, chaplains, and Thomas Wyke, and their heirs. They are held in gavelkind of the king’s manor of Middilton by service of 50s. yearly.
Wade and Milton. A messuage, 209a. land, 40a. salt marsh, and 3a. wood. Long before his death he divested himself of these in favour of Thomas Yerde, chaplain, and the said Thomas Wyke, and their heirs. The premises are held as follows:—100a. land in gavelkind of the said manor of Milton by service of 8s. 4d. yearly; 15a. land of the prior of Christ Church, Canterbury, as of his manor of Brakesoure, by service of 12d. and 2 hens yearly; 24a. land of the manor of Bakchild by service of 16s. yearly; 10a. land and 40a. marsh of the manor of Mere in gavelkind by service of 8s. yearly; 6a. land of the prioress of Schepeye by service of 2s. 2d. yearly; 3a. land of William de Milton by service of 16d. yearly; and 51a. of John de Northwode, knight, by service of 22s. 9d. yearly.
The said Arnold died on 22 July last. Arnold his son, aged 17 years and more, is his heir.

LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Swaton, Wednesday the feast of St. James the Apostle, 49 Edward III.
Threkyngham. A capital messuage with a dovecote, 60a. arable and meadow, and 110s. 4d. rent of lands let at farm, held of the heir of Beaumond, a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service, as of the castle of Folkyngham; and a messuage and a bovate of land, held of the prince of Wales, as of the fee del Haye, by the service aforesaid.
Osbernby. 20a. arable in the fields of Osbernby, held of the said prince by the service aforesaid
(Unspecified.) A shot (cultura) of arable containing 24a., called ‘Crossewonge,’ held of William Marmyon of Kyseby by the service aforesaid and a rent of 18s. 7d. yearly.
All the above she held in fee tail by gift and feoffment of Thomas vicar of Threkyngham and Hugh atte Hall, who enfeoffed thereof, by the name of the manor of Threkyngham with its appurtenances, John de Sourdevale and Agnes his wife and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Amandus de Sourdevale, John’s father, and his heirs. John and Agnes had issue the said Agnes, now deceased, and died during her minority, whereupon the king seized all the premises held of the heir of Beaumond, likewise a minor, and committed the custody of them, together with the marriage of Agnes, to Alexander de Barton until the lawful age of Agnes. Agnes married the said Alexander, and he and she were in possession of all the premises until her death. She died without issue, so that all the premises ought to remain to the said Amandus de Sourdevale and his heirs in form aforesaid.
She died on 6 November last. Thomas Sourdevale, aged 50 years and more, brother of the said Amandus, is her kinsman and next heir.

205. CHRISTIANA LATE THE WIFE OF JOHN STEYNOUR.
Writ of mandamus, 17 May, 49 Edward III.
LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 19 May, 49 Edward III.
Parish of St. Nicholas Coldabbeye [in] Queen[hithe ward]. A messuage, held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
She died about Michaelmas last, day [not known]. After her death the said John Steynour had possession of the messuage by the courtesy of England because he and she had a daughter, name not known, lawfully begotten between them, who died before she did. John died on 12 May last. Before their deaths he and Christiana demised the messuage during their pleasure to John Kent, ‘brewere,’ on a yearly tenancy, and he still has possession of it without lawful title. Christiana has no heirs, so far as the jurors can ascertain.

Staunton. The manor, in Staunton, Kilvyngton, Alverton, Flaghbergh and Dalyngton, and the advowsons of the churches of Staunton and Kilvyngton, held of the lord de Roos, lord of Hamelak, by knight’s service.
Eyleston. The manor called ‘Stauntonfee,’ held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the fee of Tykill, by knight’s service.
All held for life by gift and feoffment of John de Aslacton, parson of the church of Briggeford ‘atte Brigend,’ with successive remainders to Thomas de Staunton and the heirs male of his body, to Ralph son of the said Geoffrey and the heirs male of his body, to James de Staunton, clerk, for life, to Isabel daughter of the said Geoffrey for life, and to the right heirs of Geoffrey.
Eyleston. A manor called ‘Golhall,’ held of William Bussy, knight, lord of Hagham, by knight’s service. At one time he held this manor in his demesne as of fee, and gave it to Thomas, James, Robert and John, his sons, for their lives, to wit, to Thomas 2 messuages, 3 tofts, a cottage and a moiety of a carucate of land at a yearly rent of 3s., to James a messuage, 2 tofts and a moiety of a carucate of land at the like rent, to Robert a messuage, 4 cottages and a moiety of a carucate of land at the like rent, and to John 3 messuages and a moiety of a carucate of land at a yearly rent of 20s. Robert and John died in his lifetime, and after their death he entered on their shares and died seised thereof, and of the rents of the remainder.
He died on Monday after the quinzaine of Michaelmas, 43 Edward III. Elizabeth daughter of William de Staunton, knight, his son, aged nearly 14 years, is his next heir.

HERTFORD. Inq. taken at Ware, Friday after St. Luke, 49 Edward III.
Sabrichesworth. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee. The extent includes among rents of assise of free tenants 1 lb. wax (ciri), 3 great arrows, and a sparrowhawk or 2s.) the last item forthcoming from the manors of Rykelyngge and Elsyngham, co. Cambridge.
He died on Monday before St. Laurence last. John Say, his son, aged 2 years and more, is his heir.

SUSSEX. Inq. taken at Lewes, 9 October, 49 Edward III.
Bukstede. The manor, held of Sir John Waleys, knight, by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee and a rent of 32s. 8 3/4d. yearly to the archbishop of Canterbury at his manor of Southmallyngg.
Hammes. The manor, held of the earl Warenne by service of one knight’s fee.
Stret. The manor, held of the same earl by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee.
He died on Tuesday after St. James last. Heir as above, aged three-quarters of a year and more.
KENT. Inq. taken at Depford, 5 October, 49 Edward III.
Smethorn. A third part of a mill so called, which mill is held of the lord de Moumbray, as of his manor of Riersh, by service of 2s. yearly.
Mallyng. A tenement with lands in Riersh, which John Benet (?) held to him and the heirs male of his body by gift of the said lord de Say. John died a month ago without heir male of his body, so that the reversion belongs to the heir of the said lord de Say.
Norton, Newenham and Herteye. The manors, held of Sir Luke de Ponyngges by knight’s service. Ralph de la Doune, rector of Codham, and others, gave them to John Chaumpayne and Katharine, his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Geoffrey de Say, knight, whose son and heir is the said William, and his heirs. John and Katharine are dead without heirs lawfully begotten between them, so that William died seised of the manors in his demesne as of fee.
Codham. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service, as the jurors understand. William de Appulderefeld and others gave it, with the advowson of the church, to the said William de Say and Beatrice, his wife, and the heirs of their bodies. The said William and Beatrice afterwards gave the advowson and 1a. land, parcel of the manor, to Roger Digge and Master John Digge and their heirs. The extent includes a capital messuage completely destroyed, lands in Beddrede, Northberdenne, Southberdenne, Thornfeld and Mede, a park with deer, area not known, of which the parker receives 14d. weekly wages, and leets twice a year soon after Easter and Michaelmas.
Ewelle in Mallyng. Rents of assise of 50s. 0 1/2d. over and above 100s. due yearly to the bishop of Rochester, and rents of a ploughshare worth 12d., 11 quarters of barley, and 40 hens. Whether William gave these for the life of John Wantyng or died seised thereof the jurors know not.
Birlyng. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of one knight’s fee, as the jurors understand. The extent includes a park with deer, area not known, and two leets yearly after Easter and Michaelmas.
Burgham. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by knight’s service, amount not known. The extent includes two leets after Easter and Michaelmas.
Westgrenewych. The manor, held as above. The extent includes two leets soon after Hockday and Michaelmas.

208. JOHN LE DESPENSER.
Writ, 6 October, 49 Edward III.
NORFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Schipedham, Wednesday before St. Luke, 49 Edward III.
Calverlye. A moiety of the manor, held of the bishop of Ely by service of half a knight’s fee.
Reymeriston. 15a. arable, 6a. meadow, 10a. pasture and 8a. underwood, held of William Bardolf, knight, service not known; and 2a. pasture, held of the abbot of Wendelyng, service not known.
Hardyngham. 4 1/2a. land, held of William Manteston, service not known.
He died on Thursday after the Assumption last, being a minor aged 14 years. Annora wife of John Corouner, sister of Ela his mother, is his kinswoman and heir, and is 40 years of age. John de Calverlye, brother of the said Ela, died seised of a moiety of the said manor about the year 35 Edward III, when the temporalities of the bishopric of Ely were in the king’s hand by the death of Thomas de Leylde, sometime bishop. The said John le Despenser, John de Calverlye’s kinsman and heir, was then a minor, and the king had the custody of that moiety during his minority. Gilbert le Despenser, knight, had all the premises at farm from the king by reason of the said minority at a rent of 30s. yearly at the Exchequer.
