Writ touching the lands &c. held by them by knight’s service of the heir of Edmund de Clyvedon, knight, a minor in the king’s wardship. 23 April, 51 Edward III.
SOMERSET. Inq. (indented) taken at Crukern, Wednesday after Holy Trinity, 51 Edward III.
Thorne Coffyn. A moiety of the manor, and the advowson of the church, held of the said heir by knight’s service.
Emma died about the feast of St. Peter’s Chains, 50 Edward III, and Isabel about the feast of the Assumption in the same year. Their heirs are Thomas Rutherdene, aged 40 years and more, son of Alice one of the sisters of Richard Coffyn, their father, Elizabeth Heghene, aged 18 years and more, daughter of Thomasia one of the daughters of Maud second sister of the said Richard, John Culleye, aged 18 1/2 years, son of Elizabeth Culleye the other daughter of the said Maud, Agnes Verlegh, aged 6 years and more, Christina Verlegh, aged 4 years and more, and Juliana Verlegh, aged 2 years and more, daughters of Alice Verlegh one of the daughters of Emma Verlegh third sister of the said Richard, Joan wife of Matthew White, aged 20 years and more, the other daughter of the said Emma Verlegh, and Richard Burdene, aged 22 years and more, son of Christina Burdene fourth sister of the said Richard.

327. ELIZABETH DANEYS.
Writ, 1 June, 51 Edward III.
RUTLAND. Inq. taken at Uppyngham, 9 June, 51 Edward III.
Lyndon. A third part of the manor, held for life by way of dower after the death of Roland Daneys, knight, her husband, of the king in chief by service of a third part of a knight’s fee.
Tykencote and Horne. The manors, held for life by grant of Alexander de Skulthorp and Richard Daneys, clerk, of the earl of Chester by homage and fealty, the reversion belonging to John son of Oliver Daneys, kinsman of the said Roland, and his heirs. The manor of Home is worth nothing because the whole township of Horne is completely waste.
She died on Thursday in Easter week last. The said John son of Oliver, aged 24 years and more, is next heir of the said Roland to the manors and third part aforesaid.

328. EDMUND DE FRITHEBY, knight.
Writ of precipimus, 1 April, 51 Edward III.
YORK. Inq. taken at Hundmanby, Monday after St. George, 51 Edward III.
Grymston by Seteryngton. A messuage, 3 tofts and 14 bovates of land, tenure not known.
Frithby. A messuage, 18 tofts, 2 carucates of land, a watermill and a wood called ‘Lumberghwode,’ held of William de Latymer, knight, by knight’s service.
Edelthorp. The manor, and 8 tofts, 6a. meadow and 2 carucates of land there, held of John Bygod, knight, by knight’s service.
Barthorp. 3 tofts and 7 bovates of land, held of the same John by knight’s service.
All the above he held in fee tail by virtue of a gift and feoffment made by Roger de Romundby to Ralph de Fritheby and Alice his wife, ancestors of the said Edmund, and the heirs of their bodies. The lawful issue of the said Roger (sic) de Frythby and Alice was John de Frithby, who entered on the premises after their deaths according to the above feoffment. His issue was Robert de Frytheby, who entered thereon after his death. Robert’s issue were John de Frythby, the elder son, and the said Edmund, the younger son. John entered after Robert’s death and died in seisin without heir of his body; and after his death Edmund entered as his brother and heir, and also died in seisin.
He died on the feast of SS. Philip and James, 49 Edward III. Maud and Isabel, his daughters, aged respectively 8 years and 6 years and more, are his next heirs. Margaret his wife has had possession of the premises since his death, by what title the jurors know not.

329. WILLIAM DE FERRARIIS of Groby, knight.
Writ of precipimus, 4 April, 51 Edward III.
ESSEX. Inq. taken at Braxstede, 20 April, 51 Edward III.
Stebbing. The manor, held of the duke of Lancaster by service of 2s. yearly.
Wodeham Ferrers. The manor, held of the duke of Lancaster by service of 4s. yearly.
Fairstede. The manor, held of the king, as of the honor of Boulogne, by service of one suit to the court of the said honor. Long before his death he granted it to Robert de Bradenham for life and one year afterwards, with reversion to himself and his heirs. After Robert’s death it was taken into the king’s hand on account of the minority of Henry, William’s son and heir, a minor in the king’s wardship. Robert died on 2 October, 50 Edward III.
William died on 7 January, 44 Edward III. The said Henry, his son and heir, was 21 years of age on 16 February last.
The manors of Stebbing and Wodeham Ferrers have been in the possession of Ralph de Ferrariis, knight, ever since William’s death by demise of the king. The manor of Fairstede was in the possession of John Welde, escheator, from Robert’s death until his own. Neither John nor anyone in his name after his death delivered it to Thomas Bataill, now escheator, as the said Thomas has testified to the inquisition.

330. MARGARET LATE THE WIFE OF WILLIAM DE FERRARIIS of Groby, knight.
Writ of precipimus, 24 March, 51 Edward III.
WARWICK. Inq. (indented) taken at Fleckenho, Thursday the feast of St. George, 51 Edward III.
Fleckenho. A third part of the manor, held as dower after the death of William her husband, and lately recovered by her by the king’s writ against Peter West, who held the whole manor for life by grant of the said William, with reversion to the heirs of William.
She died at Yenge, co. Essex, on Saturday before the Nativity of St. Mary, 49 Edward III. Henry son of the said William, aged 21 years and more, is his heir. Since her death the escheators have taken the profits of the third part by virtue of their office.

ESSEX. Inq. taken at Braxtede, 20 April, 51 Edward III.
Gynge Joyberdlaundry. The manor, held of Henry de Ferrers, as of his manor of Wodeham Ferrers, by service of 8d. yearly. She held it for life after the death of William her husband by grant of John le Blount, son of Hugh le Blount, knight, by a fine levied in the king’s court, to her and the said William and the heirs of the latter. Since her death Ralph de Ferrers has had possession of the manor by the king’s letters patent for a certain fixed rent, because the manor was taken into the king’s hand by reason of the minority of Henry, son and heir of the said William, a minor in the king’s wardship.
Stebbyng and Wodeham Ferrers. A third part of the manors, with the advowson of the church of Wodeham, held as dower after the death of the said William. The manors are held as above (No. 329).
Merkes (or Merkeshall) in Great Dunmawe. A third part of the manor, the whole of which is held of the king, as of the honor of Boulogne, by service of one suit to the court of the said honor.
Ralph de Ferrariis has had possession of two-thirds of the manors of Stebbyng and Wodeham Ferrers both before and since her death by the king’s grant. Roger Keterich and John Welde, escheators, successively had possession of third parts of the manors of Stebbyng, Wodeham Ferrers and Merkeshall from the time of her death until the death of the said John Welde. Neither John Welde nor anyone in his name delivered the said third parts to Thomas Bataill, the present escheator.
Margaret died on 5 September, 49 Edward III. Henry de Ferrariis, aged 21 years on 16 February last, is her next heir to the premises.

331. ROBERT GRUBBE of Kent.
Writ, 10 February, 51 Edward III.
KENT. Inq. taken at Newenton, 5 March, 51 Edward III.
Canterbury. He held no lands &c. in the county; but long ago the king granted to William Cundy of Sandwich and his heirs 30l. yearly of the farm of the city of Canterbury to be received by the hands of the bailiffs and citizens, and the said William had five sisters, to wit, Margaret wife of the said Robert Grubbe, Constance now the wife of James Wygod, Idonia Messebergh, Alice late wife of Luke Whatynden and Margery now the wife of William de Makenhad. The said rent descended to them as heirs of their brother because he died without heir of his body, and they had livery thereof out of the king’s hand by due process, as the jurors suppose. Robert and Margaret had issue Agnes now the wife of John Isak of Brugge, and after Margaret’s death the said Robert received a fifth part of the rent as tenant for life by the courtesy of England, and had livery by due process, as the jurors suppose, and died seised of such estate therein.
He died on Wednesday after the Purification last. The said Agnes, aged 23 years and more, is Margaret’s daughter and next heir.

332. WILLIAM GOLDSMYTH of Walyngford.
Writ of precipimus, 20 May, 51 Edward III.
BERKS. Inq. (indented) taken at Walyngford, 25 May, 51 Edward III.
Walyngford. A messuage, held of the bishop of Winchester in fee by service of 7 1/2d. yearly. He bequeathed it by his testament to Roger Cole and Richard Stokebrugg, then caretakers (procuratoribus) and wardens of the bridge of Walyngford, and their successors, for the repair, amendment and maintenance of the bridge.
He died about 21 Edward III, day not known. After his death Christiana his wife had possession of the messuage according to the custom of the borough of Walyngford for 21 years, when she died. After her death the said wardens had possession for a year, and then enfeoffed Thomas Reignald of Walyngford, to hold to him and his heirs. Thomas has had possession ever since. William has no heir to the knowledge of the jurors.

333. JOHN DE HARYNGTON, knight.
Writ of amotus, 10 February, 51 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Inq. (indented) taken at Grantham, Wednesday the feast of the Annunciation, 51 Edward III.
Paunton by Grantham. The manor with the advowson of the church, a watermill, 5 carucates of land, 8a. meadow, 50a. wood in a park, and 15s. 7d. rent of assise of free tenants, all held by knight’s service and a yearly rent of 1/4d. of the daughters and heirs of Humphrey de Bawne, earl of Hereford, minors in the king’s wardship, whose names the jurors know not.
He died on Sunday before St. Wolfram the Bishop, 50 Edward III. His daughters Amice, aged 24 years, married to John Kirnell, Isabel, aged 23 years, married to Hugh Fairfox, and Alice, aged one year, are his next heirs. Alice is in the king’s wardship by reason of the minority of the said heirs of the earl of Hereford.

NOTTINGHAM. Inq. (indented) taken at Newerk, Wednesday after St. Gregory, 51 Edward III.
North Muskham. A messuage, 100a. untilled arable, 20 1/2a. meadow, and 20s. 8d. rent, held of the abbot of Petreburgh in socage by service of 2s. yearly.
He died on Sunday the feast of St. Wilfrid the Archbishop, 50 Edward III. His next heirs are his three surviving daughters, Amy (Amya), aged 30 years and more, Isabel, aged 24 years and more, and Alice, aged one year.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. (indented) taken at Norhampton, 18 March, 51 Edward III.
Grendon. The manor, held of the earl of Pembroke, as of his manor of Zerdele Hastynges, in socage by service of 6d. yearly. The said John held it in fee tail with Elizabeth his first wife, now deceased, to them and the heirs of their bodies, by grant of Robert de Clypston, clerk.
He died on Sunday after St. Denis last. Amy wife of John Carnell, aged 30 years and more, and Isabel wife of Hugh Fairfax, aged 28 years and more, are his daughters and next heirs by the said Elizabeth.
RUTLAND. Inq. (indented) taken at Okham, 25 March, 51 Edward III.
Wyssenden. A toft called ‘Rotemore,’ 11 1/2 virgates of arable, 80a. meadow and 40a. pasture, held of the master and clerks of the college of Pembrokhalle, Cauntebrigg, in socage by service of 4l. yearly.
Date of death as last above. Amy wife of John Carnell and Isabel wife of Hugh Feyrefax, each aged 30 years and more, and Alice, aged 3/4 year and more, are his daughters and heirs.
Writ to the escheator to assign dower to Isabel late the wife of the said John, whose husband held by knight’s service of the heirs of Humphrey de Bohun, late earl of Hereford, minors in the king’s wardship. 5 May, 51 Edward III.
LINCOLN. Assignment of dower made on 18 May, 51 Edward III.
Little Paunton. Within the site and precinct of the manor, a chamber with a solar called ‘le dowerplace,’ a ‘kilnehowse,’ a stable with a pond lying under the said chamber, an empty plot extending lengthwise from ‘le Kechynbek’ on the north to the king’s highway on the south, a garden called ‘le vyneyerd’ to the south of a common bridge of Paunton, every third dove taken in a dovecote there, and a third part of the profit of a watermill. Of the demesne lands of the manor, 128a. lying in the east, south and west fields, being the third part of each shot (culture) which lies nearest the sunrise. Also 6 tofts and 6 bovates of land as her dower of 18 tofts and 18 bovates which are in the lord’s hand because of the death of the tenants who held them in bondage, to wit, 2 tofts and 2 bovates now held by Philip Pull, a toft and a bovate now held by John Tailiour, a toft and a bovate lately held by Baldwin de Haryngton, a toft and a bovate which Roger Messenger held, and a toft and a bovate lately held by Agnes Hode. Also 2 2/3a. meadow lying in Saltforthholm and le Milneholme, and at Bryndemylneholm, at the east end of that meadow. Also 16 2/3a. wood extending northwards from the south end of the wood as far as the dyke called ‘Kellodyk.’ Also 8s. 7 1/2d. and 1/3lb. cummin rent of assise from free tenants of Little Paunton and Great Paunton, to wit, Englesia Brownyng, Richard son of Robert de Strowston, William Roberd, Geoffrey Wryght, William Mawge and the heirs of Roger Campion. Also 16d. of the rent issuing from 2 cottages held by Baldwin de Paunton and William Wesilheved. Also a third part of 2 empty cottages, formerly held by John Faukener, which are in the lord’s hand. Also 4s. 8d. of the rent issuing from lands &c. held at will by William Aleyn. Also a third part of the profits of the court there, together with the customs and services of her tenants.

North Muskham. The southern third part, stretching from east to west, of the site of a messuage called ‘Haryngtonplace’; a third part of 120a. arable lying in parcels in the town fields; a third part of 20 1/2a. meadow lying by parcels in the town meadows; 10s. 4 3/4d. rent of assise from free tenants, to wit, William son of Idonia and his heirs, Emma de Batheley and William son of John Serjant; and a third part of the profits of the court.

Writ, 26 February, 51 Edward III.
SUFFOLK. Inq. (indented) taken at Ilketeshale, Thursday the feast of St. Gregory, 51 Edward III.
Ilketeshale. The manor called ‘Bardolfveshalle’ (extent given), held for life by gift and feoffment of Elizabeth de Burgh and John Bardolf and Elizabeth his wife, with the king’s licence, at a rent of 20l. yearly, the reversion belonging to the said feoffors and the heirs of the said Elizabeth wife of John. The said manor, together with the manor of Clopton called ‘Kyngeshalle,’ is held of the king in chief by service of a fourth part of a knight’s fee. The extent includes a several fishery and a view of frankpledge.
Ilketeshale, Bungeye and Suthelmham. A messuage, 140a. arable, la. meadow and 15s. rent of assise, called ‘Mundhamfee,’ held for life by gift as above and with reversion as above. They are held of William Dufforde, earl of Suffolk, as of his manor of Bungeye, services not known.
The said John died on Wednesday after St. Scholastica, 51 Edward III. The aforesaid feoffors died long before him, and William Bardolf, son and heir of the said Elizabeth wife of John, was a minor in the king’s wardship when they died, for which reason the king for a long time received the said rent of 20l. from John de Lenne, until the said heir came of age and did homage and fealty and had livery &c. The heir is now 27 years of age and more.

335. IDONIA MESSEBERGH.
Writ, 11 MAY, 51 Edward III.
KENT. Inq. taken at Rochester, Wednesday before St. Barnabas, 51 Edward III.
Canterbury. She held no lands &c. of the king in chief; but she received of the farm of the city of Canterbury a fifth part of 30l. yearly, to herself and her heirs, as the fifth sister and one of the heirs of William Cundy of Sandwich, to whom and his heirs the king by letters patent granted the said 30l. yearly to be received of the said farm by the hands of the bailiffs and citizens of the city.
She died on Tuesday before Ascension Day last. Margery wife of William Makenhad and Constance wife of James Wygod, her sisters, Agnes wife of John Isak of Brugge, daughter of Margaret her third sister, and Thomas Whatyndenne, son of Alice her fourth sister, are her heirs. Margery, Constance and Agnes are each 24 years of age and more, and Thomas is 13 years of age and more.

NORTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Norhampton, 15 May, 51 Edward III.
Esthaddon. A manor formerly belonging to John Moris, held of John duke of Lancaster by knight’s service. It is demised at farm to Geoffrey Baillyf for 10 marks yearly.
He died on Monday after the Purification last. Reynold his son, aged 22 years and more, is his heir.

BEDFORD. Inq. taken at Bedford, Wednesday, 12 May, 51 Edward III.
Ravenesden. 30a. arable, whereof 20a. are held of the heir of the lord de Moubray, a minor in the king’s wardship, and 10a. are held of Baldwin Pycot, all by knight’s service.
Backeno. The manor, 200a. arable, a small grove of half an acre, and a dovecote, held of the lord de Gray by knight’s service.
Bolnehurst. 6a. arable, held of the heirs of Grymesby, service not known.
Maldon. A toft, 40a. arable and 9a. meadow, held of the abbess of Elnestowe by service of rendering 4s. yearly.
Fortho by St. Neots. A cottage, held of the prior of St. Neots, service not known.
Date of death and heir (aged 22 years at the Annunciation last) as above.

Writ to the mayor and recorder of London and the chamberlain of the Guildhall to certify whether the said Alan was a freeman of the city on the day of his death. 10 December, 50 Edward III.
Endorsement that on scrutiny of the rolls, books and memoranda of the Guildhall it is not found that he was a freeman.
Writ of mandamus, 4 February, 51 Edward III.
LONDON. Inq. (indented) taken before the mayor, 16 February, 51 Edward III.
He died in 23 Edward III, date not known, seised of:—
Parish of St. Botolph without Aldrichesgate. A tenement with 3 shops annexed. By his testament proved, proclaimed and enrolled in the husting of London for pleas of land held on Monday after St. Mark the Evangelist, 35 Edward III, he bequeathed the premises to Emma his wife for life, and after her death to the prior and convent of Holy Trinity within Algate, London, that they might pray for his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed. Emma had possession of the premises until her death on the feast of St. Barnabas, 35 Edward III. Thereupon the said prior and convent entered, and have had possession ever since. The premises are held of the king in free burgage, as is the whole city of London.
Alan has no heirs now surviving, so far as the jurors can ascertain at present among themselves.

338. JOHN PAYN of London, ‘armurer.’
Writ of precipimus, 8 February, 51 Edward III.
SOMERSET. Inq. (indented) taken at Frome, Monday in the first week of Lent, 51 Edward III.
Frome Valeys. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
He died on Monday after St. Laurence, 49 Edward III. He had a son William by Joan his wife, who was three years of age and no more at the time of his death. William died a minor on Thursday after Michaelmas, 49 Edward III. At the time of her husband’s death the said Joan was with chlid, and near to the birth of a daughter, now named Emmota, who is sister and next heir of the said William, and aged a year and 15 weeks. So the wardship of her body and of the manor belongs to the king. Alice Perers has had possession of the manor ever since John’s death, by what title or right the jurors know not.
