751. John de Overton
Writ to the escheator to enquire what lands the said John, who held by knight’s service of Edmund de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, and died while the earl was a minor in the wardship of Edward III, held of the earl on the day of his death, and by what service &c. 4 February, 12 Richard II.
SALOP. Inq. taken at Shrewsbury, Saturday after the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 13 Richard II.
Overton. The manor, held of the said late earl, while he was a minor as above, by knight’s service.
The said John died on Thursday after Michaelmas, 34 Edward III. Joan his daughter, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.
For 20 years after his death Thomas de Glaseley and Eleanor his wife had possession of the manor without title. Since then, William Worthyn and the above-mentioned Joan, his wife, have had possession and received the issues and profits of the manor in right of the said Joan.

DORSET. Inq. taken at Byre, Thursday after the octave of Michaelmas, 12 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor of Seynt Andrewes Church and lands &c. in Westlolleworth and Wynfred Neburgh in fee, to him and his heirs.
He held the under-mentioned manors of Holne and Bradene for the life of Eleanor his wife who held them jointly with Thomas Brudeport, late her husband, to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said Thomas.
He held the under-mentioned moiety of the manor of Lanchirchull for the life of the same Eleanor, who held it jointly with John Gonys, late her husband, to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of the said John.
Seynt Andrewes Church. The manor, held of the heir of Edmund de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, a minor in the king’s wardship, as of his manor of Mersswod, by service of rendering 4d. yearly at Michaelmas.
Westlolleworth. 10 a. land, held of the abbot of Byndone by service of rendering of 2s. 6d. yearly.
Wynfred Neburgh. 9 a. land, held of John Neburgh by service of rendering 3s. yearly; and 11 a. land, held of the abbot of Byndon, rendering a pair of spurs yearly at Easter.
Holne. The manor, held of Alexander Merle and Isabel his wife and the heirs of the said Isabel, by fealty only.
Bradene. The manor, held of the prioress of Derteford by fealty only.
Lanchirchull. A moiety of the manor, held of the heir of Edmund de Mortuo Mary, late earl of March, a minor in the king’s wardship.
He died on 20 August last. William his son, aged 30 years and more, is his heir.

Writ, 22 July, 12 Richard II
STAFFORD. Inq. taken at Eccleshale, Wednesday after St. Laurence, 12 Richard II.
Simon de Malstang and Richard Beket, chaplains, were seised in fee of the under-mentioned manor of Perton by gift and feoffment of John son of William de Perton, and gave it to the said John son of William de Perton, named in the writ, and Elizabeth daughter of William de Shareshull, and the heirs male of the body of the said John, with successive remainders to John son of Margaret de Stirchesley, who is still living, and the heirs male of his body, to Richard brother of the last-named John, and the heirs male of his body, to Thomas son of Maud del Crouche of Solihull and the heirs male of his body, to Leo de Perton and the heirs male of his body, and to the right heirs of the aforesaid John son of William de Perton. The said John son of William died without heir male of his body, the remainder falling to the aforesaid John son of Margaret.
The said John died seised of the under-mentioned manor of Tresele and land in Overton by Tresele jointly with Maud his wife, who is still living, to hold to them and his heirs.
Perton. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of petty serjeanty, to wit, 5s. 0 1/2d.
Tresele. The manor, and a carucate of land in Overton by Tresele, held of the lord de Duddeley, as of the barony of Duddeley, service not known.
He died on Friday before the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr last. John de Barnthurst, aged 30 years and more, is his kinsman and heir, to wit, son of Joan his sister.

He held the under-mentioned manors in his demesne as of fee.
Wetyng and Toftys. The manors, held of the duke of Lancaster by knight’s service.
Knapton. The manor, tenure not known.
He died on Wednesday before Whitsunday last. Margaret his daughter, aged 22 years and more, whom John Howard, knight, has taken to wife, is his heir.
SUFFOLK. Inq. taken at Chelesworth, Saturday before Holy Trinity, 12 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manor in his demesne as of fee.
Chelesworth. The manor, held of the abbot of St. Edmund by fee-farm, rendering yearly to the abbot and his successors 24 qrs. wheat, 74 qrs. malting barley, . . qrs. white peas, 1 pig’s carcase, price 5s., 5 geese, 6 lbs. candles, 6 hens, 2500 faggots and a cartload of hay.

Writ, 12 July, 12 Richard II
DORSET. Inq. taken at Wymborn Mynstre, Tuesday in the quinzaine of Michaelmas, 12 Richard II.
He was seised of the under-mentioned manor and lands for life by grant of Lionel late duke of Clarence, the reversion belonging to the heir of Edmund de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, a minor in the king’s wardship, as kinsman and heir of the said duke.
Wodekesworth. The manor (extent given), whereof 2 watermills with a garden annexed are held of John duke of Lancaster, as of his manor of Kyngeston Lacy, by service of rendering 6s. 8d. at Michaelmas, and the remainder is held of the heir of John le Iryssh of Edmondesham by service of 1/2d. at Michaelmas.
Hellewell. A messuage, 40 a. arable and 4s. rent from 2 cottages held at will, tenure not known.
He died on Sunday after SS. Peter and Paul last. Bartholomew his son, aged 14 years and more, is his heir.

Writ to the escheator to enquire as to the lands &c. which came to the king’s hands by the death of the said John and are still in the king’s hand; as Isabel late the wife of Geoffrey Roukele, sister and heir of the said John, died before suing the lands &c. of her inheritance out of the king’s hands. 17 February, 12 Richard II.
SOUTHAMPTON. Inq. taken at Winchester, Tuesday, 6 April, 12 Richard II.
The under-mentioned messuage &c. in Lokerlee and Tuderlee came to the king’s hands by the death of the said John, who also held the under-mentioned manor of Lymborn in his demesne as of fee.
Lokerlee and Tuderlee. A messuage, 100 a. arable, 2 a. meadow, 20 a. wood, 30 a. underwood and 8l. rent from divers tenants, held of the king by service of rendering 6l. 11s. 9d. yearly at the Exchequer at Michaelmas by the hands of the sheriff.
Lymborn. The manor, tenure not known.
The aforesaid Isabel, John’s sister and heir, died on Tuesday after All Saints last. Richard Wayte, aged 30 years and more, is her son and heir.

Writ to the mayor and escheator in London, ordering him to send into Chancery an inquisition said to have been taken by him ex officio after the death of the said Richard. 18 November, 12 Richard II.
LONDON. Inq. taken ex officio before the mayor, 7 November, 12 Richard II.
The said Richard had no lands &c. in the city of London or the suburbs thereof on the day of his death, so far as the jurors can ascertain.
He died in the parish of St. Olave by the Tower on Tuesday, 13 February, 50 Edward III. Humphrey de Swynerton, his brother, aged 24 years and more, is his heir.

DORSET. Inq. taken at Dorchestre, Monday the feast of St. Clement, 12 Richard II.
He held no lands &c. in the escheator’s bailiwick on the day of his death, to wit, on Monday after the Annunciation last, because long before his death he demised all his lands &c. in the bailiwick to John his son, aged 30 years and more, to hold in fee.

SUSSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Uckefelde, the feast of the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 12 Richard II.
The jurors say that the said John, who held elsewhere of the king in chief, held nothing in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief in the county aforesaid; but they protest that they have no cognizance of the office taken before Robert Loxle, late escheator.
They say, further, that the said John died sole seised of the under-mentioned manors.
Brambeltye, Heghton and Jeventon. The manors, held of the duke of Lancaster, as of the honor of Laigle, by knight’s service.
Lavertye. The manor, held of the lord la Ware by knight’s service, and of John Bule by service of 4d. rent yearly.
He died on Monday before the Purification, 10 Richard II. Philip Seintcler, knight, his son, aged 23 years and more, is his heir.
Since his death, Mary his wife has taken the issues and profits of the manors, by what title the jurors know not.
SUSSEX. Inq. (indented) taken at Estgrynstede, Monday the eve of the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr, 12 Richard II.
The findings are identical with the above. But the jurors are not the same and the arrangement of the inquisition is slightly different. The lord la Ware is called John la Ware, knight; John Bule is called John Boyle; and the heir is not described as a knight.

YORK. Inq. taken at Wyghton, 1 April, 12 Richard II.
She held the under-mentioned messuage and land in her demesne as of fee.
Applegarth. A messuage, and 6 bovates of land in Baynton and Applegarth, held of the king in chief by knight’s service and the service of doing suit yearly to the county of York and wapentake of Herthull. The premises are worth 26s. 8d. yearly over and above 13s. 4d. yearly which William Marshall of Ake receives therefrom for life by licence of the king’s progenitors.
She died on 14 March last. William her son, aged 30 years and more, is her heir.

YORK. Inq. taken at Wyghton, 1 April, 12 Richard II.
He held the under-mentioned manors of Wyghton, Lonnesburgh and Wyrthorp in his demesne, to him and the heirs of his body, by a fine levied in the court of the king’s progenitors by licence of the same progenitors.
He held the under-mentioned third part of lands &c. in Malton &c. as of the right and inheritance of Anastasia his wife, who is still living, one of the daughters and heirs of William de Aton, knight, together with Ralph de Euere, knight, and Katharine his wife, a second daughter and heir, and John Conyers, knight, and Elizabeth his wife, a third daughter and heir.
He died seised of the under-mentioned knight’s fees, which are held of the manor of Lonnesburgh.
Wyghton. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of a moiety of a knight’s fee. The extent includes pastures called ‘Northeng’, ‘Flamyre’ and ‘le Halmore’ lying in common with Richard le Scrop, knight, whereof a moiety pertains to the manor, lands and rents in Shupton, and a court.
Lonnesburgh. The manor (extent given, including a court), with the advowsons of the churches of Lonnesburgh and St. John at ‘le Pyk’ in the city of York pertaining thereto, held of the archbishop of York by knight’s service and service of doing suit to the archbishop’s court in Wilton every three weeks.
Wyrthorp. The manor (extent given, including a court), held of the archbishop of York as above.
Malton, Norton, Aton, Brompton, Hoton Bosshell, Wyntryngham, Wellome and Berdylby. A third part of all the lands late of William de Aton, knight, held of others than the king.
Collome. One knight’s fee, held by Thomas de Berlay and Thomas Lyle.
Multhorp and Kyrkeby. A moiety of a knight’s fee, held by the heir of William Plays, knight.
Thurkylby. A tenth part of a knight’s fee, held by the heir of Walter Faucomberg, knight, there and in Helperthorp.
Bridsall. Three parts of a fee, held by John Shirwod.
Shirburn in Hertforthlyth. A third part of a knight’s fee, held by Robert de Shirburn.
Helperthorp. One knight’s fee, held by the prior of Bridlyngton, the prior of Watton, and others.
Estlotton and Westlotton. One knight’s fee and a half, held by Ralph Hastyng, knight.
Langtoft. A third part of a knight’s fee, held by the heir of William Moubray of Cleveland.
Croham. Three parts of a knight’s fee, held by Gerard Salvayn, knight.
Tolthorp. A third part of a knight’s fee, held by Henry Toly and John de Yeverslay.
He died on 7 March last. Margaret his daughter, aged 17 years and more, whom Thomas de Brounflete has taken to wife, is his heir.

Writ, 12 May, 12 Richard II
OXFORD. Inq. taken at Oxford on the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 13 Richard II.
Being seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor, he granted a yearly rent of 20 marks therefrom to John Clyvele, citizen and vintner of London, and Katharine his wife, both of whom are still living, to hold for life in survivorship, and the tenants of the manor attorned to the said John and Katharine accordingly. The said rent has been unpaid for the last 4 years. Afterwards he granted the manor to certain persons and their heirs, and the said persons re-granted the same to him and Elizabeth his wife, who is still living, to hold to them and his heirs. On the day of his death he held the manor, so charged, in joint feoffment with the said Elizabeth.
North Aston. The manor, held of the earl of Salisbury, as of the honor of Ambresbury, by knight’s service.
He died on Tuesday after Michaelmas last. Anne and Joan, his daughters, aged 7 years and more and 5 years and more respectively, are his heirs.

SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Stoke Curcy, Tuesday after St. Barnabas, 12 Richard II.
The said Thomas died seised of the under-mentioned manors, lands and rents in joint feoffment with Elizabeth his wife, who is still living, by grant of John Clynton and Matthew Gurnay, knights, Richard Mareys and Robert Wrenche made to the said Thomas and Elizabeth and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to the right heirs of Thomas.
Oterhampton. The manor, with the advowson of the church, held of Robert Fitz Payn, as of his manor of Wyke, by knight’s service.

He held in right of Elizabeth his wife the reversion of the under-mentioned tenements, which are held for life by Thomas de Brochulle with reversion to the said Elizabeth and her heirs.
Beterisdenne. Tenements called ‘Hecchisdenne’, parcel of the manor of Bocton Allulph, held of the king in chief, as of the honor of Boulogne.
He died on 6 October last. Heirs as above, under age, but ages unknown.

He held the under-mentioned moiety, manor and messuages &c. of the right of Elizabeth his wife, who is still living.
Nocton. A moiety of the manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by parcel of a barony. The extent includes a fishery in the Wythum and perquisites of court.
Scot Wilughby. The manor (extent given), held of John Wavere by service of 3s. 4d. rent yearly. The extent includes a court.
Osberneby. 3 messuages and 3 bovates of land, held of the earl of Kent, as of the fee del Hay, by knight’s service and service of 8s. rent yearly; and 2 messuages and 2 bovates of land, held of the earl of Northumberland, as of his manor of Aswardby, by service of 13d. rent yearly.
He died on Tuesday the feast of St. Faith last. Anne his daughter, aged 6 years on the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist last, and Joan his daughter, aged 4 years and more on the feast of St. Peter’s Chains last, are his heirs.

SALOP AND THE ADJACENT MARCH OF WALES. Inq. taken at Lodelowe, Wednesday after St. James, 12 Richard II.
The under-mentioned hamlet and rents came to the hands of Edward III by the death of the said John Talbot of Richards Castle, and are now in the king’s hand by reason of the minority of John Talbot, his son and heir.
Wolfreton. The hamlet (extent given), parcel of the lordship of Richards Castle.
Leyntwardyn in the march of Wales, parcel of the same lordship. 60s. rent of assise of free tenants.
Baggesore. 4s. rent of assise.
All held of the king in chief as parcel of the barony of Borford.
The said John son of John died on Friday before the Translation of St. Thomas the Martyr last. Elizabeth wife of Warin Lerchedekene, knight, aged 24 years and more, Philippa wife of Matthew Gourney, knight, aged 21 years and more, and Eleanor, aged 16 years and more, are his sisters and heirs.

The said John son of John died seised of the reversion of the under-mentioned manor and advowson of Wodeham Mortimer after the death of Gilbert Talbot, knight, still living, who holds the same for life.
Hobreggehalle. The manor, with appurtenances in the towns of Wodeham, Hatfeld, Kelleveden and Great Toham, held of John Plays, knight, by knight’s service, of the prior of Hatfeld Peverell by service of 2s. yearly, and of Thomas Bonyngton by service of 2s. yearly.
Wodeham Mortimer. The reversion of the manor, and of the advowson of the church of that town, held of the king, as of the honor of Peverell, by knight’s service. The said John son of John died on 3 July last. Heirs as above.

NORTHUMBERLAND. Inq. taken at the castle of Newcastle upon Tyne, Tuesday, 3 November, 12 Richard II.
He was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manors of Seton de la Vale, Callerton and Northdissyngton, a fourth part of the manor of Hertlawe, and lands &c. in Halywell and Seton; and of another fourth part of the manor of Hertlawe in service.
He was jointly enfeoffed with Joan his wife, who is still living, according to the form of a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in the quinzaine of Midsummer, 46 Edward III, of the under-mentioned manors of Duxfeld and Brandon, rent in Branton, and moiety of the manor of Bitlesden.
Seton de la Vale, Callerton and Northdissyngton. The manors.
Hertlawe. Two fourth parts of the manor.
All held of the king in chief by homage, fealty and suit to the court of the county of Northumberland every six weeks, and by service of a knight’s fee and a sixth part of a fee, and by service of rendering to the king by the hands of the sheriff 16s. yearly on the feast of St. James for ward of the king’s castle of Newcastle upon Tyne and 2s. 8 3/4d. yearly on the feast of St. Cuthbert in September for cornage. The manors are worth 33 l. yearly and no more, because of burning and destruction by the Scots.
Halywell. A messuage and 12 a. land.
Seton. Fealties, suits of court and mills.
Halywell. 26s. 8d. rent issuing from all the lands &c. of Henry le Scrop, knight, William Vessy and William de Halywell there.
The three last items he held of John lord de Nevill by fealty and three suits of court yearly to the three chief courts of Bywell, and by rendering to the said John 15d. yearly at the feast of St. Cuthbert in September for cornage.
Duxfeld. The manor, held of Ralph Hastyngges, knight, by knight’s service and suit to the court of Slaneley every three weeks.
Brandon. The manor, and a rent of 8 marks from Branton, held of John de Felton, knight, by fealty and service of rendering a sore sparrowhawk yearly. The manor and rent are worth 10 marks yearly and no more, because of burning and destruction by the Scots.
Bitlesden. A moiety of the manor, held of Thomas de Umfranvill, knight, by homage, fealty and suit of court, and by service of rendering 6s. 8d. yearly.
He died on Monday the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross last. Alice late the wife of John Whitchestre, aged 40 years and more, is his sister and heir.
Copy of the fine referred to above, between Henry de la Vale of Seton and Joan his wife, querents, and Peter Baker, deforciant, whereby the said Peter settled the manors of Brandon and Duxfeld, 8 marks rent in Branton, a moiety of the manor of Bidilsden, and a twentieth part of a knight’s fee in Brandon, together with the homage and services of John Heron, knight, and his heirs for lands in the manor of Brandon formerly held by him of the said Peter, on the said Henry and Joan and the heirs of their bodies, with successive remainders (1) of the whole to the heirs of Henry’s body, (2) of the eastern moiety of the said manors and moiety, a moiety of the said rent, and the said twentieth part of a fee, to Nicholas de Raymes and the heirs male of his body, and in default of such heirs to Henry’s right heirs, and (3) of the western moiety of the said manors and moiety, and a moiety of the said rent, to John de Selby and the heirs male of his body, and in default of such heirs to Henry’s right heirs.

He died on Sunday after the Epiphany last. The aforesaid William son of William Bardolf is 17 years of age and more.

She held the under-mentioned manor and lands &c. as the dower due to her from the free tenement of the said John de Welle.
Skendilby. A third part of the manor (extent given). The extent includes a plot of pasture called ‘Wellepark’; and a view of frankpledge and a court whereof she held the third part in dower, as well as the other two parts, in common with John de Burwash, knight, and the prioress of Cotom.
Comberworth. 63 a. arable, meadow and pasture, 10s. rent of assise, and a rent of 1/2 lb pepper.
All the above are held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
She died on Wednesday after the Conception last. John de Welle, knight, aged 37 years and more, son and heir of the said John de Welle, her husband, is her son and heir.

WILTS. Inq. taken at Westbury, Thursday after St. Peter’s Chains, 12 Richard II.
She held one moiety of the under-mentioned manor by gift and grant of the rector and brethren of the Augustinian house or monastery of Edyngden to her and the said Ralph de Norton, deceased, and the heirs of her body, with reversion to the said rector and brethren and their successors, as is contained in the king’s licence dated 18 May, 4 Richard II. She died without heir of her body, so that the moiety ought to revert as above.
She held the other moiety of the under-mentioned manor by gift and grant of the same rector and brethren to her and the said Ralph for life, with reversion as above, as is contained in the licence aforesaid. She and Ralph are both dead, so that the moiety ought to revert as above.
Dulton. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
She died on Sunday after St. James last. John Seint Manyfuy, her kinsman, to wit, son of Joan her sister, is her next heir, and is 28 years of age and more.

WORCESTER. Inq. (indented) taken ex officio at Evesham, Friday before SS. Gervase and Protasius, 12 Richard II.
John de Schelve, the elder, who was seised in his demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned messuage &c., married a certain Lucy Throkemarton, by whom he had John Schelve, their son and heir, who entered into the premises after his father’s death and died seised thereof in his demesne as of fee. After his death John Schelve, his son and heir, a minor, entered, whose wardship pertains to the king by reason of the minority of John son and heir of John earl of Pembroke, a minor in the king’s wardship, because the premises are held of him by knight’s service. The said Lucy is still living.
Schelve. A messuage, a carucate of land and 6 a. meadow, together with the advowson of the church, held of the said John son and heir of the earl of Pembroke, as of his manor of Inteberwe, by knight’s service.
The said John Schelve, son of John the elder, died on Monday before the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 8 Richard II. John, his son and heir, is now 10 years of age and more.
Since his death John Blake, parson of the church of Grafton, has taken the issues and profits of the premises, and is to answer to the king therefor; and the body of the infant minor has been, and still is, in the custody of the said John Blake, but the jurors do not know where.
