He held the under-mentioned manors of Stowey, Puryton, Wollavyngton, Stokelond
Lovell and [Honyber] (fn. 2), the tenement in Wolwardeston and
the messuages, etc. in Honybere and Lillestoke for life by grant of Baldwin
Ailmer [and Roger Levet] with successive remainders to Roger his son, in tail,
and to Nicholas de Audeley, brother of the said Roger, and his heirs. Roger died
without issue, so that the premises belong to Nicholas by virtue of the said
grant and a fine levied in the king’s court. He held the under-mentioned manor of Pull for life by demise of Hugh Newhall, parson of the church of Southmolton, and Philip Warwik, chaplain, with successive remainders to Roland his son, in tail male, to Oliver brother of the said Roland, in tail male, to James de Audeley and Isabel his wife, and the heirs of their bodies, and to the right heirs of the said James and Isabel. Roland and Oliver died without issue. James and Isabel had issue a certain Margaret, who had issue Fulk Fitz Wareyn, who is still living and is 23 years of age and more. He was seised for life on 12 May, 48 Edward III, of the under-mentioned messuage
and carucate of land, with reversion to King Edward and his heirs; and on that
day he granted all his estate in the premises, by the name of the manor of
Staunton, to William Gambon, named in the writ, at a yearly rent of 8l. 6s. 8d., with
proviso for re-entry in the event of the rent being in arrear for a fortnight.
William was in possession during the life of the said James, and after his death
until he was removed by the escheator. On 15 December, 48 Edward III, King
Edward by letters patent ratified the above grant to William, and moreover
granted that he should have the manor in fee. The messuage and land and the
manor are one and the same tenement, and before the king’s grant to William the
reversion of the manor belonged to the king and no one else. William Gambon is
50 years of age and more. The said James never re-entered the manor by reason of

Fremyngton and South Molton and the hundreds of Fremyngton and South Molton with
the advowsons of the churches of Combe Martyn, Dertyngton, Fremyngton and South
Molton for the term of the lives of himself and Isabel his wife, deceased, by
gift of Hugh Nywehall, late parson of the church of Blakedon, and Roger Magot,
late vicar of the church of Fremyngton, to him and the said Isabel for life,
with successive remainders to James their son and the heirs male of his body, to
the heirs male of their own bodies and to Edward III and his
heirs. They and their son James died without heir male of their bodies, so that
the premises should remain to the king and his heirs. He held the under-mentioned manors of Bovetracy, Northlieu, Holdesworthy and Langacre, co. Devon, and Takkebeare, co. Cornwall, with the advowsons of the churches of Northlieu and Holdesworthy for life, with reversion to Edward III, by gift of the same Hugh and Roger by a fine levied in the court of Edward III. James and Isabel had a daughter Margaret, who married Fulk Fitz Waryn, knight. Fulk and Margaret had issue the present Fulk Fitz Waryn, knight, and died. The present Fulk is 25 years of age and more and the premises ought to descend to him and the heirs of his body by virtue of the said fine. After his death the premises descended to Thomasia and Elizabeth, his daughters, who were of full age and died without heirs of themselves. After their death the premises reverted to Stephen Alvethecote, their uncle, brother of the said John, who was of full age. After his death the premises descended to John his son, who was 27 years of age and more at the time of his father’s death. |

The said John, being seised in demesne as of fee of the under-mentioned manor
and advowson, gave them in fee to Matthew de Clyvedon and William Monketon,
parson of the church of Astyngton, who continued in seisin all his life, and
after his death gave the manor and advowson to the said Alice for life, with
remainder to John’s right heirs. Alice granted her estate in the premises to
William Beauchamp of Warwyk and William Burton, knights, Henry de Ardern, and
John de Norhampton, clerk, during whose possession thereof John de Meryet,
knight, kinsman and one of the heirs of the said John de Beauchamp, to wit, son
of Eleanor one of his sisters, released all his right and claim in the premises
to the aforesaid William, William, Henry and John, all of whom except William
Beauchamp of Warwyk are dead. Cecily Turbervill, aged 50 years and more, is
sister and other heir of the said John de Beauchamp. John de Meryet is 36 years
old and more. Silferton. The manor and advowson of the church, held of Edward Courteney, earl of Devon, services not known. She died on Tuesday the eve of SS. Simon and Jude, 7 Richard II. Since her death the aforesaid William Beauchamp of Warwyk, knight, has received all the issues of the manor by himself and his men. |

The said John held no lands &c. in the county on the day of his death; but
Hugh de Garewelle of Lincoln was seised in demesne as of fee of the
under-mentioned messuages, etc. and gave them to the said John by charter in fee
simple, on condition that, if before Midsummer, 4 Richard II, he should pay or
cause to be paid on behalf of the said Hugh 80l. to Robert
Raulynes of Amcotes and 23l. 15s. 7
1/2d. to John Tostrys of Lincoln, merchant, then the
charter of feoffment and the seisin had there on should remain in force, but
that otherwise they should be of none effect and Hugh and his heirs and assigns
might re-enter the premises. John Bate did not observe the covenants of certain
indentures made between him and Hugh, whereupon Hugh re-entered on Monday after
Michaelmas, 5 Richard II, and held the premises as his freehold. John did not die in seisin of the premises. Eleanor his daughter and
heir was 5 years old and more on the day of his death. Helmeswelle. A messuage and 8 bovates of land, held of Anne queen of England, as of the manor of Kyrketon in Lyndesey, by service of 21s. rent payable yearly to the said manor, and by suit of court every three weeks; a messuage, held of Gerard de Southill, as of the barony of Redbourne, service not known; and 5s. rent from divers lands &c. which are held of the honor of Richmond, service not known. Bischopnorton. A messuage, 2 tofts and 3 bovates of land, held of John bishop of Lincoln. The said Eleanor died on Sunday before Michaelmas last. John de Schrewesbury of Kyrketon in Lyndessey, aged 40 years, and Agnes his wife, and John son of Richard Cooke of Helmeswelle, aged 23 years, are her heirs. |
