OXFORD. Inq. taken at Burcestre, Friday before SS Peter and Paul, 18 Richard II.
She held the under-mentioned third part of a manor in dower after the death of the said Henry, of the inheritance of William de Ferrariis of Groby.
Hethe. A third part of the manor, which manor is held of the earl of Gloucester by service of 2s. yearly.
She died on 30 May last. William de Ferrariis of Groby, aged 22 years and more is her heir.

353 JOAN LATE THE WIFE OF EDMUND GREY, knight
Writ, 26 October, 17 Richard II
YORK. Inq. taken in the castle of York, Monday after All Saints, 17 Richard II.
She died seised of the under-mentioned manor in joint feoffment with the said Edmund her late husband. The feoffment was made, with the king’s licence, to them and the heirs of their bodies, with remainder to Edmund’s right heirs.
Barton in Rydale. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of rendering 10s. yearly for blanch farm by the hands of the sheriff and doing suit to the county of York, the trithing of Yarlestre and the wapentake of Rydale at Barton Cross, and by service of a tenth part of a knight’s fee.
She died on 15 October last. Edmund her son by the aforesaid Edmund Grey, knight, is their next heir, and he is 30 years of age and more.

He held the under-mentioned messuages etc. by the courtesy of England, as of the right of Cecily his wife.
Wynterborn Kyngeston. 7 messuages, a toft, a carucate of land, 3a. meadow and 20a. pasture, held of the king in chief by knight’s service and service of 40s. to be rendered yearly to the sheriff of the county at Michaelmas.
He died on Thursday before the Conversion of St Paul last. Richard his son by the said Cecily is his and her heir, and is 13 years of age and more.

CAMBRIDGE. Inq. (indented) taken at Royston, Wednesday in the first week of Lent, 17 Richard II.
He held no lands etc. in the county in his demesne as of fee; but Thomas de Maddynglee, granted the under-mentioned manor of Wendey to him, William de Stodeley, Sir John Baud, chaplain, William Hotston and John West, to hold to them and his (William’s) heirs. William Hotston and John West are still living; the other grantees are dead.
And William Brugge, parson of the church of Teversham, granted the under-mentioned lands etc. in Wendey and Knesworth to him (William Gambon of Wendeye), Thomas Maddynglee, parson of the church of Munketon, William Stodelee, clerk, William Horston and John West, to hold to them, their heirs and assigns. Thomas de Maddyngle and John West are still living; the other grantees are dead.
Wendey. The manor, held of Anne queen of England, as of the honor of Richmond, by one suit to tourn of the said honor held in the accustomed place.
Wendey and Knesworth. All the lands etc. in the towns and fields thereof which the above-mentioned William Brugge had by gift and feoffment of Robert de Bassyngbourn and Agnes Pavy of Wendeye, held of William Fitz Rauf by service of 1/2 mark.

He held the under-mentioned third part of the manor of Qwytewelle with the lands etc. mentioned therewith, messuage called Qwytewelle with the lands etc. mentioned therewith, and moiety of the manor of Skeyton with the lands etc. mentioned therewith, by the courtesy of England after the death of Cecily his wife.

She held the under-mentioned manors and moiety of a manor for life in joint feoffment with the said Walter her husband with reversion to Henry de Percy, earl of Northumberland, and Maud his wife and the heirs male of their bodies, by a fine levied in the king’s court and also with the king’s licence.
Caldebek. The manor, held of the king in chief by rendering 20s. yearly for cornage. She held the under-mentioned third part of the manor of Wharrom Percy in dower by endowment of the said Walter her husband with reversion to Ralph de Percy, son of Henry de Percy, earl of Northumberland, and the heirs male of his body, by virtue of a gift thereof made by the earl of the said Ralph and his heirs male aforesaid, with remainder to the earl and his heirs. She attorned to the said Ralph by virtue of that gift.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. taken at Neuport Paynell, 20 February, 17 Richard II.
She held the under-mentioned manor of Neuport Paynell by virtue of a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in the quinzaine of Hilary, 33 Edward III, between John Bottourt of Weoley, knight, and Joyce his wife, querents, and Thomas Shyrref, parson of the church of Sheldesley, and Henry Hankeserd, chaplain, deforciants, whereby the manor was settled on the said John and Joyce for life, with remainder to John son of the said John, and Maud daughter of John de Grey of Retherfyld, and the heirs of their bodies; which last-named Maud is the same Maud as her who was the wife of Thomas de Harcourt and is now dead.
She held the under-mentioned manors of Woketon and Little Lynford and advowson of Woketon by virtue of a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster in the three weeks from Michaelmas, 32 Edward III, between John son of John Bottourt, and Maud daughter of John de Grey of Retherfyld, querents, and John Bottourt of Weoley, knight, and Joyce his wife, deforciants, whereby the said John Bottourt and Joyce granted the manors and advowson to the said John son of John, and Maud and the heirs of their bodies.
The said John Bottourt, Joyce his wife, and John son of John died before the said Maud.
By a fine levied in the king’s court at Westminster on the morrow of Ascension Day, 9 Richard II, between Roger Campeden, clerk, John Hyde, clerk, and Edward de Acton, querents, and Hugh Burnell, knight, and Joyce his wife, deforciants, the reversion of the above-mentioned manors of Neuport Paynell and Little Lynford, after the death of the said Maud was settled on the said Hugh Burnell and Joyce and the heirs of Joyce, on condition that, if the said Hugh should survive Joyce, and if he and his assigns should peaceably hold the castle of Weoley, the manors of Northfeld, Cradeley, Oldesueneford, Honnesworth, Clent, Mere and Bordesley, the view of frankpledge in Aston, and the advowsons of the churches of Oldesueneford, Honnesworth and Mere, without impeachment by the heirs of the said Joyce by reason of any claim of title, waste or otherwise, then he should hold the said manors of Neuport Paynell and Little Lynford for life only with reversion to the heirs of the said Joyce his wife, but that if he or his heirs should be so impeached touching the said castle, manors, view of frankpledge and advowsons or any part thereof, or touching the hamlet of Dodeston, and the heirs of the said Joyce would not abandon their action when requested to do so, then he should have the said manors of Neuport Paynell and Little Lynford to him and his heirs for ever. By virtue of that fine the said two manors ought to remain after Maud’s death to the said Hugh Burnell and Joyce in form aforesaid.
By a fine levied on the same day and between the same parties as the above, the aforesaid Hugh Burnell and Joyce acknowledged the manor of Woketon to be the right of the aforesaid Roger Campeden, clerk, and moreover granted the reversion of the said manor which Thomas Harcourt, knight, and Maud his wife held for the life of the said Maud with reversion to themselves (Hugh and Joyce) and the heirs of Joyce, to the above-mentioned Roger Campeden, clerk, John Hyde, clerk, and Edward de Acton, and the heirs of Roger. By virtue of that fine the said manor ought to remain after Maud’s death to the said Roger, John and Edward and the heirs of Roger.
Little Lynford. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Neuport Paynell. The manor, held of the king in chief by knight’s service.
Woketon. The manor, held of Richard earl of Arundel, service not known.
The said Maud died on 29 January last. Joyce wife of Hugh Burnell, knight, aged 26 years, her daughter by the aforesaid John son of John Bottourt, her late husband, is her next heir and next heir of her said husband.

Moteston in the Isle of Wight. The manor and the advowson of the church thereof, held of Edward III in chief by knight’s service, as of the castle of Caresbrok.
She died on Tuesday before St George, 36 Edward III. Elizabeth her daughter, now 30 years of age and more and the wife of Peter Brian, is her heir.
Immediately after her death John Estbury, late escheator, seized the manor into the hands of Edward III by reason of the minority of the said Elizabeth who was then a minor in the said king’s wardship, and occupied it for 26 weeks, taking the issues and profits thereof. Since then, Edward Chike, John Hebbere and Andrew Kyrkeby, the deceased husbands of Anne sister of the said Denise, and the said Anne and Henry Emmery, her present husband, both still living, have occupied it and taken the issues and profits thereof, by what title the jurors know not.

She died on Friday before St Martin, 50 Edward III. She had a daughter and heir Elizabeth by the said Thomas Nerford, her husband, who was then 5 years of age and more. The last-named Elizabeth died on Thursday after All Saints, 8 Richard II; and Katharine Perrers, aged 50 years and more, daughter of Adam Perrers, citizen of Norwich, and kinswoman of the said Elizabeth wife of Thomas, is her next heir.
The said Katharine, during her possession of the manor aforesaid, alienated it by charter to Edmund Kempe and others, who have occupied it and taken the issues and profits thereof ever since.

He held the under-mentioned messuage etc. for life by demise of Edward le Despenser named in the writ.
Sukkeleye. A messuage, 4a. arable, a parcel of meadow containing 1a. and 4a. wood, held by service of rendering yearly the said Edward’s castle of Hanly, and to his heirs, half a gallon of ale of the town of Worcester and half a gallon of ale of the town of Bromzhard.
He died on Thursday before All Saints, 8 Richard II. He has no heir.
Since his death Roland Pywawh has received the issues and profits of the messuage, land and meadow and Hugh Burnell, knight, has held the 4a. wood.
The escheator asked Roland that the issues of the messuage etc. should be delivered to him on behalf of the king, but Roland refused. So he has to answer to the king therefor.
