DORSET. Inq. taken at Dirrewyneston, 26 April, 22 Richard II.
A full extent of the manor is given, the total value amounting to 35l. 9s. 9 3/4d. yearly. The jurors say that from the time of the death of Isabel until the seizure of the manor into the king’s hands the manor was occupied by Morgan Gough, Richard Mocheldevere and William Pistor, who took the issues and profits thereof, by what title the jurors know not.
It is true that Robert Fitz Payn, knight, Isabel’s father, granted a yearly rent of 10 marks out of the manor to William Pistor and Christina his wife for life, but long after the said grant he gave the manor to the said William Pistor and others, to hold to them and their heirs for ever, and the said William and his co-feoffees were seised thereof accordingly, so that the rent aforesaid was utterly extinguished so far as William was concerned. The jurors, therefore, have not made any deduction in the extent of the manor on account of the said rent.

428 JOHN PAYN of London, ‘armorer’
Writ to the escheator in Somerset to send into Chancery by the quinzaine of Easter next an inquisition concerning the following: It was found by an inquisition taken before Robert James, late escheator, that the said John Payn held the manor of Frome Valeys in his demesne as of fee of the king in chief by knight’s service, that he died on Monday after St Lawrence, 49 Edward III, that he had a son named William by Joan his wife who was 3 years old and no more at the time of his death and died on Thursday after Michaelmas in the same year, that the said Joan was pregnant at the time of her husband’s death and near to the birth of a daughter named Emmota, who was sister and next heir of the said William and one year old and more at the time of the taking of the inquisition. By pretext of that inquisition the manor was taken into the hands of Edward III and is still in the king’s hand. Petition has now been made to the king by Thomas Neuton and Amy his wife, alleging that Amy is daughter of the said John Payn and sister and heir of the said William, and that John her father, never had a daughter named Emmota, but the name Emmota was inserted in the inquisition in place of the name Amy by inadvertence of the jurors, and praying the king in order that the manor be delivered to them as the right and inheritance of the said Amy. 4 March, 17 Richard II.
SOMERSET. Inq. taken at Bruton, 8 April, 17 Richard II.
The allegations set out in the writ are correct. The said Amy wife of Thomas Neweton is 18 years of age and more.

BEDFORD. Proof of age taken at Luton, Wednesday before St Mark, 17 Richard II.
William Lammare, aged 51 years and more, says that the said heir is 21 years of age and more, having been born in the manor of Hoo, and baptised in the church of Luton in the feast of St Mark, 45 Edward III. This the deponent is sure of because on the same feast in the same year he had a son named William born at Stoppesle, who is 21 years of age and more.
John White, aged 49 years and more, John Coket, aged 50 years and more, Thomas Duraunt, aged 53 years and more, and John Bayly, aged 52 years and more, agree with the above, and say that Henry de Ferrariis, father of the said heir, asked Benet, vicar of the said church, to write the day and year of the birth in the missal there, and they are so written.
John Spayne, aged 59 years and more, John Mytton, aged 56 years and more, and William Stratle, aged 60 years and more, agree, and say that they remember because at that time they were journeying on pilgrimage to St Thomas of Canterbury, and during their pilgrimage they were told in London of the birth of the said heir by Robert de Hoo, the heir’s godfather.

As ordered in the above writ, Joan late the wife of Henry de Ferrariis, knight, John de Rome and John de Morehous were warned to be present at the above proof of age.

John Goldyngg of Tateshale, aged 44 years and more, agrees, and says he remembers because on the day of the birth he was sent for Sir Ralph de Cromwelle, knight, lord of Tateshale, who was hunting in the chase of Tateshale, to be godfather of the said heir.
William Taillour of Tateshale, aged 50 years and more, agrees, and says he remembers because on the day of the birth he was servant and chamberlain of Sir Ralph de Cromwelle, and because he was not present in the chamber on the arrival of Sir Ralph from the chase aforesaid, Sir Ralph struck him on the neck and felled him to the ground.

Thomas Birkewode [of] Tumby, aged 61 years and more, agrees, and says he remembers because on the day of the birth he was servant to the abbot of Revesby, whose beasts were impounded that day at Tateshale by the forester of the said Sir Ralph de Cromwelle, and he went to Tateshale to have livery of the beasts, and when he was in the church he saw many great folk (magnatos) around the font.
Robert Cok de Tumby, aged 67 years and more, agrees, and says he remembers because on the day of the birth his firstborn son was born and baptised, whose godfather was the abbot of Revesby.
John Grayne of Conyngesby, aged 53 years and more, agrees, and says he remembers because on the day of the birth he was gardener to Sir Ralph de Cromwelle and found a nest with white rabbits which he gave up to the lady de Cromwelle, on which account she gave him a striped robe.
