Northampton. Inq. Sunday after the Purification, 7 Edw. I.
Plumpton. 44a. arable in demesne, 2½a. meadow, 2a. wood within the forest, rents of assize of freemen 6½d., of villeins 27s., and of cottagers 2s. 11½d., held without service of Adam de Napton, who gave the same to Roger de Lyuns with the said Joan his daughter in free marriage, but that land renders 2s. 2d. to the king for an assart; 12a. arable held of John le Lou by exchange for certain land in Yclele and 24s. rent of assize; and 44a. arable, 2½a. meadow, and 15s. 3½d. rent of assize held of Seman de Stokes until the (full) age of Simon, son and heir of Ralph de Throp.
Richard de Lyuns her son, aged 30, is her next heir.

Roger his heir is aged 19½.

Walton. The manor with the hamlet of Calale alias Kalale (extent given), held of the king by service of 1 knight.

Writ to Thomas de Normanvile, the king's steward, 16 Feb. 7 Edw. I.
[Derby; bailiwick of the Peak (Peck).] Extent, Saturday before St. Gregory, 7 Edw. I.
Le Warmebroc manor. 75a. and 1r. arable, meadow and wood in demesne, with two plots worth 4d. yearly in Capell, and 14a. and ½r. in the field called Warentonfeld, which he conferred on William de Wikeleye (his son) a fortnight before he died.
Feirfeld. 61a.
Tadinton and Presteclive. 38a. land with two small tofts, and 20d. rent.
Hope. A messuage, and 1½ bovates land, worth with the forestry and liberties pertaining thereto, 13s. 4d.
The jury know nothing of his heirs, because he was born in foreign parts.
[Derby.] Extent, Wednesday the feast of St. Peter in Cathedra, 7 Edw. I.
To the same effect as the above except that Le Blakebroc manor is written instead of Le Warmebroc, and a messuage is added in Feirfeld. He gave the said 14a. on his sick bed.
The jury know nothing of his heirs.
Writ on the complaint of Joan, late the wife of the said Michael, that a messuage and land in Tatindon and Presteclyve in which she was jointly enfeoffed with him had been taken into the king's hand, 16 Feb. 7 Edw. I.
[Derby.] Inq. Saturday the eve of St. Gregory.
Tadinton and Prestclive. The said Joan was jointly enfeoffed with the said Michael of a messuage and 2 bovates land there by Nicholas Herigaut and Margery his wife, and continued her seizin until the death of the said Michael, and they pertain to her.
Writ on the complaint of William de Wykeleye, that land in Boudon of which the said Michael had enfeoffed him, had been taken into the king's hand, 16 Feb. 7 Edw. I.
[Derby.] Inq. Saturday before St. Gregory, 7 Edw. I.
Boudon. The said William was enfeoffed of 13a. and 3r. land by charter thirteen days before his death by the said Michael, who could then ride and walk and was of good memory and sane. The tenement was held of the king in chief with other lands in the Peak (Peck'), service unknown.

Writ to Ralph de Sandwyco, the king's steward, 20 May, 7 Edw. I.
Berks. Inq. (undated.)
Hearthrug and Tytecumbe. The manor, worth 10l. yearly, held of the king in chief by serjeanty of keeping one of the king's goshawks at his own costs from the feast of the Purification to the feast of St. Michael, if it pleases the king, and then bringing it to the king's court and keeping it there at the king's charges, as well in robes as other necessaries, as long as it shall please the king. Richard de Hearthrug his father had a wife of whom he begat the said Philip and a daughter Joan, and of a second wife Clarice he begat one Richard; his inheritance descended to the said Philip, who died without heir of his body; the jury leave it to the discretion of the king's court whether the inheritance ought to descend to the said Joan, aged 40, born of the first wife, or to the said Richard, aged 28, a male born of the second wife.
Mandate from the king's steward to the sheriff of Berks, reciting writ of 15 June, 7 Edw. I.

Hertrugg. The manor, held of the king in chief by serjeanty of coming to the king's court when required at the feast of St. Michael and there remaining until the feast of the Purification, and there keeping a goshawk at the king's charges, and afterwards mewing it at home and keeping it for the following year at his own costs, receiving a robe yearly.
Tytecumbe. The manor, held by the same service.
The said Joan is his next heir.
Similar mandate, reciting writ of plenius certiorari on the petition of Richard de Copeland and Joan his wife, daughter of Richard de Herterug, heir of the said Philip as born of the same father and mother, complaining that Richard son of the said Richard by Clarice his second wife, claiming the lands &c. of the said Philip, had surreptitiously procured an inquisition to that effect, 16 June, 7 Edw. I.

Drax. A garden on the site (loco) of the capital messuage, a croft, 8a. and 1r. arable in demesne, a fishery in the river of Use, 9l. 8s. 11d. rent from free tenants holding 486a. and 3r. and doing suit of court, 6l. 5s. 8d. from socmen holding 281½a. and ½r. in socage and doing suit of court, 66s. 6½d. from the same socmen holding 26 bovates land in bondage, 47½ hens, a custom called mill rent, 40 quarters of oats, and perquisites of courts, with marchet and lairwite from the daughters of the said socmen worth 1 mark, held in dower of the inheritance of John Paynel.
Billeburg, Munketon and Sandewath. 1 knight's fee held by Roger de Mortuo Mari dwelling in Lindeseye, and owing homage, relief and scutage.

Northumberland. Inq. The day of St. Mark.
Ellingcham. A capital messuage, lands, rents, mill &c. (extent given, with names of tenants), including the pasturage &c. of Tyndeley, Nortwod and Ellingcham and of Mange more (or ? the great moor), peat(?) under Tyndeley, dead wood and perquisites of the court of Ellincham, and the breweries of Ellingham and Osburwick, held of the king in chief.
Ellingcham, Osburwick and Dokesford. 1 knight's fee held of the king.
Newstead (Novum Locum). A messuage, lands, rents &c. (extent given with names of tenants), including seven husbandmen (osbandes) in the town of Osburwick each rendering 10s. yearly, le Wytstrother rendering 30s. yearly, and pasturage of Plumtreside, Le Norwod and Newstead (Novo Loco), held of the king in chief.

A messuage and 6 bovates land, held of Roger Bygot, earl of Norfolk and marshal of England, in chief by reason of Aline his wife, daughter and heir of Philip Basset, by service of ¼ knight's fee and 1d. rent; and the said John rendered thence to the said Roger le Bygot 1 mark yearly, and he to Robert de Grey lord of Coges 10s., and he answers to the heirs of Manserus Arsyk, and they pay the said mark for the said tenements for the guard of Dover.

326. Matthew Turpin.
Mandate from Ralph de Sandwyco, the king's steward, to the sheriff of Wilts, reciting writ of certiorari dated 12 Jan. 7 Edw. I. on the complaint of Maud late the wife of Matthew Turpyn, son of the abovesaid Matthew, that the sheriff of Wilts had taken into the king's hand certain lands of which she was jointly enfeoffed with her husband by the said Matthew.
[Wilts.] Inq. made at the castle of Salisbury, Sunday before the Purification, 7 Edw. I.
Est Winterslawe. The said Matthew, who held of the king in chief, enfeoffed Matthew his son and Maud late the wife of the said Matthew the son jointly of 100s. land in Est Winterslawe in the time of King Henry, to be held to them and the heirs of their bodies; and the king never had relief thence.
Writ to Ralph de Sandwico, the king's steward, to deliver the above lands to Stephen de Brigthmerston and the said Maud his daughter to be cultivated, until the king's next Parliament, taking sufficient security for restitution if required, and to enquire concerning the value of the wardship &c. 7 Feb. 7 Edw. I.
[Wilts.] Inq. Sunday the octave of Easter, 7 Edw. I.
Estwynterslewe. A garden with court, 200a. in demesne, pasture for 400 sheep and 16 beasts, 43s. 11½d. rent of assize, customary works worth 43s. 11½d., pannage, wood, pleas and perquisites &c. The marriage of the heirs of the said Matthew and Maud is worth 100s. and no more because the said Maud was jointly enfeoffed with her husband deceased.

Writ of plenius certiorari, on the complaint of Robert de Sancto Melano that the sheriff had taken the manor of Trenant, of which the said Joan had enfeoffed him long before her death, into the king's hand, 15 May, 7 Edw. I.
Cornwall. Inq. Tuesday before St. Barnabas, 7 Edw. I.
Trenant. The said Joan enfeoffed the said Robert of the manor a year and more before her death, which he peacefully held until the sheriff by the king's command ejected him, doing service of ¼ knight's fee to the earl of Cornwall from whom it is held in chief.

Writof extent and partition to Richard de Holebrok, the king's steward and to the sheriff of Essex, on the complaint of John de Cueye and Joan his wife that Nicholas le Gras the other heir had taken possession of the capital messuage of Little Badua which was of the said John Renger, and is of the demesne of the crown, and certain other lands, without partition, 12 Feb. 7 Edw. I.
Essex. Inq. Friday after St. Mark, 7 Edw. I.
One Richard de Borham sometime held the manors of Borham and Little Waltham, 80a. land in Ronewelle, and 1 carucate land in Little Badewe, of the fee of the honour of Boulogne by service of 1 knight's fee; of which lands John Rengger purchased a messuage and lands &c. in Little Badewe, the right of which after his death descended to Ydonea and Cecily his sisters, and Joan and Isabel daughters of Margery another sister, which Joan, John de Quoye married: the manor of Little Badewe ought to be divided into three equal parts, whereof Nicholas le Gras ought to have two parts and the said John and Joan the third part; the said Nicholas has not permitted a due partition, and has taken all the amercements &c. to the damage of the said John and Joan of 8 marks.
Little Badewe. The manor (extent given), held of the manor of Borham, which Sir Robert Burnel, bishop of Bath and Wells, now holds, by service of 6d. yearly and ⅓ knight's fee.

Davinton and Hokeling. Rent of land and marsh, worth 9l. 6s. 2½d. yearly, held of the king in chief in socage by petty serjeanty, viz.—by service of a pair of gilt spurs, price 6d. No king ever had wardship there before.

331. John Comyn.
Writ of certiorari to Robert de Ufford, justiciary of Ireland, on the complaint of Mabel, late the wife of the said John, that the escheator had taken into the king's hand the wardship of his lands and heir, which pertains to her as next (friend) to the heir, because the lands are held in socage, asserting that it pertained to the king by reason of the priory of the Holy Trinity, Dublin, and the archbishopric of that place, being vacant and in the king's hands, 21 Oct. 7 Edw. I.
Ireland. Inq. Saturday the eve of St. Dunstan, 8 Edw. I.
(Unspecified.) Lands held in socage of the said prior for 100s. rent. The wardship would have pertained to the said Mabel, because held in socage, but for the custom of Ireland, which is that if homage is contained in the charter wardship is used, and in the deed between John Comyn, father of John Comyn deceased and the said prior it is found that the said John did homage to the prior for those lands in the king's court, but the said John last deceased did no homage. The wardship pertains to the prior by reason of the homage, but not to the archbishopric, which was never in seisin of that wardship during the vacancy of the priory.

Writ of plenius certiorari to Richard de Holebrok, the king's steward, on the complaint of Master William Pikerel that the sheriff of Warwick, on the said Robert's death, had taken into the king's hand certain lands in Kingesbrom of which the said Robert had enfeoffed him, feigning that the said Robert was not of age at the time of the enfeoffment, 3 Feb. 7 Edw. I.
Warwick. Inq. Wednesday within the octave of Easter, 7 Edw. I.
Kingges Brome. About the feast of St. Gregory, 3 Edw. I., the said Robert the son enfeoffed the said William of a messuage and 4¼ virgates land in Kingges Brome by charter, doing service of 1/10 knight's fee to the king for the said land, and for 3 virgates alienated from that tenure in the times of King John and King Henry, viz.—to William de Utilicote 2 virgates, to the abbot of Bordesle 6a., to Walter Jurdan 7a., to John Alysaundre 1½a., and to Emma the said Robert's sister 2a., and at that time the said Robert was of full age, and had made his homage to the king as the jury believe; and he did not die seised of the said land in fee, but as esquire to the said William and casually coming there, he fell very sick and died there.

Writ of certiorari to Thomas de Normanvill, the king's steward, 9 Sept. 7 Edw. I.
York. Inq. The octave of St. Michael, 7 Edw. I.
Anlauby. Land (unspecified), worth 13 marks yearly, excepting 4s. held of the abbot of St. Mary's, York, by service of 2 marks yearly as a free farmer for all services, excepting two suits at the abbot's court on reasonable summons; and the said Margery fell ill a fortnight before the Purification last and is so infirm that she is not of sound mind; after which date came Robert de Stotevyll of Cotingham, of whom the said Margery held nothing, and without any authority took away John her son and heir, and still unjustly detains him.

Writ to Peter de la Mare, constable of the castle of Bristoll, concerning lands in the hundred of Laberton escheat through the deaths of the said Peter, Christiana, and Iseult without heir, which the king lately gave to Master Thomas, Queen Eleanor's marshal, 22 April, 7 Edw. I.
[Gloucester.] Inq. Tuesday before SS. Perpetua and Felicitas, 10 (?) Edw. I.
(Unspecified.) A piece of land containing three half-acres (boundaries given), which was of Felicia 'the holde,' late the wife of Walter le Wepere, was held in fee by the said Peter, and after his death Christiana his wife was seised thereof for a whole year until Hamund the clerk (Cler') seized it into the king's hand, and held it whilst he lived, and now John Alisaundre is tenant, and it is of the fee of the prior of St. James. The said Christina was seised of a piece of land adjoining containing ... acres which was of Eva de Wroxhulle, lying upon Bhulle (?), of the same fee. The said John holds that land, and has held it for six years, the jury know not by what warrant or service: the whole is worth 3s. yearly.

A messuage (unspecified) was held by the said Mabel of the prioress &c. of Clerkenewell in chief rendering 32d. yearly, and no other service to anyone. No one intruded into the messuage by force after her death but her son Thomas a youth, who was joined with her in the charter of feoffment, entered by reason thereof with his uncle and two grooms (garciones) as of right. The sheriff's seal only is appended, as it is not the custom of the city for the jury to append their seals.
